Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has declined an invitation to the first-ever Indian-sponsored forum for presidential candidates set for Cabazon this summer.Heh. Such brilliance.
In doing so, she may have made enemies of a relatively small, yet well-heeled voting bloc - Native American leaders - who seem intent on flexing their burgeoning muscles in determining the next president.
In announcing the New York Democrat's decision Wednesday, the group, the Indigenous Democratic Network, issued a scathing prepared statement that in essence attacked one of their own. The organization, known as INDN's List, supports Democratic Indian candidates while promoting the core issues of the Democratic Party.
"I'm both disappointed and astonished that Sen. Clinton has turned her back on American Indians," said Kalyn Free, director and founder of INDN's List. "By refusing to participate in this historic event, she lost an opportunity to inspire an entire generation of American Indians to engage in the democratic process.
"Sadly, that reflects the hollowness of her rhetoric and the narrowness of her vision."
