All Guo Liwei wanted was a good night's sleep - but his room-mate's loud and consistent snoring made it impossible.
In the hope of embarrassing his fellow university student, Guo made a short video of Zhao Yan snoring away in the middle of the night - then posted it on a university web site.
It created more tension between the two and did nothing to stop the loud snores.
Finally, unable to take it any more, Guo grabbed a knife during the night and plunged the blade into the snoring Zhao's chest and back.
The case of the Chinese university student who was driven to murder by his companion's snoring resulted in a court handing down the death sentence - which was immediately suspended but could mean he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
The court in Changchun, capital of the north east Jilin province, handed down the sentence after Guo confessed to the murder, which took place in the room he shared with Zhao at the Jilin Agricultural University.
The official Xinhua News Agency reported today that Guo had complained several times to Zhao about his snoring, but even the posting of the video on the internet failed to stop the problem.
The suspended death sentence means that if he behaves himself in jail during the next two years Guo will remain behind bars for the rest of his life. If he misbehaves, he will be executed.
