It took about two minutes from the time Senate President Steve Sweeney certified the passage of the millionaires tax package for Gov. Chris Christie to veto the bills at his desk.Of course cutting taxes would help stimulate our economy but Democrats have never been known to pay attention to reality.
"While I have little doubt that the sponsors and supporters of this bill sincerely believe that the state can tax its way out of this financial crisis, I believe that this bill does nothing more than repeat the failed, irresponsible and unsustainable fiscal policies of the past," wrote Christie in his veto statement. "Now is not the time for more of the same. Ultimately, another tax increase will punish the state’s struggling small businesses and set our economy further back from recovery."
After the state Senate passed the bill, which had already passed the Assembly, Sweeney walked the bills down the hallways of the Statehouse, from the state Senate chambers to the governor's office. Once inside, he handed the bills to Christie, who was waiting. And that won't be happening. Excessive taxation is why the wealthy have been fleeing the state in droves. Levying further onerous taxation on the dwindling number is sure to spur an even greater exodus.
"What took you so long ?" asked Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak.
Christie sat at a wooden desk emblazoned with the seal of the state of New Jersey and swiftly signed vetoes.
"We'll be back, governor," said Sweeney.
"Alright, we'll see," said Christie.
Democrats would need two-thirds majority in both houses of the Legislature to override the veto.
The Democrats just don't get it. It's the economy, stupid.
I was at that now-famous press conference last week, and in my professional assessment it marked a turning point in Christie’s career. He seemed to suddenly figure out what has been obvious on both the state and national scenes for some time now: People are really pissed — if I may employ the governor’s term of art. And what they’re pissed about is almost entirely economic. The old red state-blue state lineup based on social issues is obsolete. At the moment, the people seem to have a better understanding of our fiscal situation than the politicians. In the past week I've discussed the Christie video with many people, a number of them moderate, non-political types who don't normally vote Republican but voted for Christie. Not a single one regrets their vote. If the Democrats keep up this nonsense they'll be in the minority in Trenton very soon.
