How long until the Democrats call this a smear?

Whatever the case, it's nice to see the GOP get in the game.

It's about time.

Barack Obama returns to Capitol Hill on Tuesday to speak with House Democrats, and Republicans will try to spoil the party by linking the Democrats’ presidential nominee to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and their reluctance to allow votes on offshore oil drilling.

Rep. Adam Putnam (R-Fla.) and Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) will greet Obama’s arrival with a news conference in which they’ll assert that Reid (D-Nev.) and Pelosi (D-Calif.) are holding up votes on offshore drilling in order to protect Obama.

They’ll also begin to use “Pelosi-Reid-Obama” in the all-in-the-same-breath way that Democrats now use “Bush-McCain” — to make the parties’ popular candidates indistinguishable from their less beloved incumbents.

Pelosi has told Politico that she’s standing in the way on a drilling vote because she’s determined to use the speaker’s gavel to “save the planet.” Reid said Monday that he would allow votes on amendments to a long-stalled energy package, including one on drilling, and Republican leaders were skeptically considering the offer Monday evening.

Saving the planet? What hubris.

The attack on Obama and the Democratic leadership comes as some of the more partisan members of the House GOP — concerned that their party’s seemingly successful energy message isn’t enough to prevent electoral disaster in November — agitate for more aggressive attacks on the Democrats.

How is it an attack to point out Obama belongs in the same company as the incompetent Pelosi and Dingy Harry?

Another interesting line of attack is this:

In a preview, one GOP aide declared: “By November, every American voter will know the name of Charlie Rangel the way they knew Tom DeLay in 2006. Count on it.”

Of course the left will scream that it's racist.

When in doubt, cry racism.

Bush Approval Twice as High as Congress

Granted, a 36% approval isn't anything to get happy feet over, but considering the daily pounding he takes, I'd say the number is pretty good.

Considering the pathetic number the Nancy Pelosi Democrat Congress is at, however, he should be ecstatic.

Congress Approval Rating Matches Historical Low: Just 18% approve of job Congress is doing

PRINCETON, NJ -- A new Gallup Poll finds Congress' approval rating the lowest it has been since Gallup first tracked public opinion of Congress with this measure in 1974. Just 18% of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing, while 76% disapprove, according to the August 13-16, 2007, Gallup Poll.

That 18% job approval rating matches the low recorded in March 1992, when a check-bouncing scandal was one of several scandals besetting Congress, leading many states to pass term limits measures for U.S. representatives (which the Supreme Court later declared unconstitutional). Congress had a similarly low 19% approval rating during the energy crisis in the summer of 1979.

The Democrats and their media enablers (who will probably ignore this story for the most part) will spin this as dissatisfaction that they couldn't get us out of Iraq quickly enough.

My take is the public sees a nonstop atmosphere of Bush-bashing and endless (and quite pointless) investigations, with virtually no track record of meaningful legislation in their first eight months.

Of course, Congressional Republicans shouldn't get too giddy over this, though this does present them with a fantastic opportunity to begin taking their message to the public and push an aggressive conservative agenda. While many longtime GOPers are retiring, there are plenty of fresh young faces out there, such as Florida's Adam Putnam, who need to sell the public on an agenda of prosperity and strong national defense. Contrasted with the Democrat message of higher taxation and cowardice, and you have a winning formula.

Get away from the nonstop gloom and doom, show a positive message and start the 2008 campaign now.

The Democrats may think they have a lock on the White House, but if they have Mrs. Clinton at the top of the ticket, she's not going to sell in flyover country and serious Congressional gains can be made.

Democrats Revamp Surrender Plan

They're not yet ready to surrender their surrender plan.

House Democratic leaders are developing an anti-war proposal that wouldn't cut off money for U.S. troops in Iraq but would require President Bush to acknowledge problems with an overburdened military.

The plan could draw bipartisan support but is expected to be a tough sell to members who say they don't think it goes far enough to assuage voters angered by the four-year conflict.

Bush "hasn't to date done anything we've asked him to do, so why we would think he would do anything in the future is beyond me," said Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Calif., one of a group of liberal Democrats pushing for an immediate end to the war.

Sharp cookie, that Woolsey. Next thing you know, she might realize Bush isn't paying attention to them for a simple reason. The American people do not want to turn tail and run.

The House Democratic proposal brought a sharp response from Republicans on Wednesday.

Rep. Adam Putnam, R-Fla., called the plan a "fig leaf" to distract the public from what he said was Democrats' ultimate goal of cutting off funds for troops in combat.

"We support full funding for our troops who are in harms way — without strings attached," said Putnam, R-Fla., after emerging from a closed-door conference meeting.

Meanwhile, the Democrats plan to lard up the latest Iraq spending bill.
