'Rush Will Not Get His Wish and Mr. Cheney Was Misinformed'

Well maybe you can stop bad-mouthing two of the most popular conservatives out there. Maybe apologize for endorsing Obama while you're at it.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell touted his Republican credentials Sunday, shooting down pointed criticism from Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney that he had abandoned the GOP.

Limbaugh has called on Powell to join the Democrats, while Cheney has said he believes Powell already left his party.

"Rush will not get his wish and Mr. Cheney was misinformed. I am still a Republican," Powell said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

While standing by his loyalty to the Republicans, Powell defended his endorsement of President Obama last fall and continued to call on the Republican Party to be more moderate and expand its base.

"You can only do two things with a base. You can sit on it and watch the world go by, or you can build on it," Powell said. He said the party should be more inclusive.

This kind of advice has riled some conservatives, who warn that too much moderation will cause the Republican Party to merely mimic the Democrats. In calling for the party to be more moderate, Powell has also criticized conservatives like talk show host Limbaugh.

Limbaugh Hands Over Reigns of GOP To Colin Powell

Having tired of being the titular head of the GOP, Rush Limbaugh today resigned on the air and handed over the reigns to Obama voter Colin Powell.

MSNBC rejoiced.

"I have been anointed to this position by members of the drive-by media, and of course, the Obama White House," said Limbaugh. "I am resigning as the titular head of the Republican Party."

Despite challenges, MSNBC's already covering the "resignation."

Shock Poll: Americans Want Less Government, Less Spending

I say it's a shock because at the rate Obama is spending us into oblivion, you would think the American people are OK with it. Apparently they're not. Although this will not be reported outside of Fox News since it's their poll. The rest of the media will pretend people voted for bankruptcy.

Now if the Republicans have the brains to focus on a coherent message the results of this poll can help formulate a strategy for 2010. They can start by luring the independent vote.

The Obama administration consistently uses the word "invest" or "investment" instead of government "spending." Even so, most Americans don't make the distinction as fully 78 percent say it means spending their tax dollars, not saving them.

In addition, 54 percent of voters think the Obama administration is proposing too much of an increase in government spending, while 6 percent say not enough. About a third -- 35 percent -- says the spending is "about right."

A majority of Democrats (61 percent) think the president's proposed spending is about right, while majorities of Republicans (85 percent) and independents (61 percent) think there is too much of an increase.

The flip side of government spending is budget cuts, and the poll finds 6 in 10 think President Obama is not cutting enough waste from government, including 84 percent of Republicans, 66 percent of independents and 38 percent of Democrats.

These are just some of the findings from a FOX News poll released Friday.

Given Obama's criticism of the Bush administration deficits during the presidential campaign, some 28 percent of Americans say they are surprised Obama is increasing the nation's deficit. More than twice as many -- 68 percent -- are not surprised.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell recently made news by saying that Americans "want more government in their life." Americans disagree. Most -- 71 percent -- say they want less government in their life. A much smaller number (17 percent) fall in the category described by Powell.

Hmm. I guess more people agree with Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney than agree with Colin Powell.

'If I Had To Choose in Terms of Being a Republican, I'd Go With Rush Limbaugh'

Seems Rush Limbaugh is very popular this weekend. Last night the lovely and charming Wanda Sykes wished death upon him while Barack Obama chortled.

Today former Vice President Dick Cheney chose Limbaugh in favor of Colin Powell as the direction the GOP should head in.

Cheney told a Sunday talk show he didn't know Powell was still a Republican. Powell endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president, and Cheney said, "I assume that's some indication of his loyalty."

Powell says Republicans need to move to the center and Limbaugh diminishes the party by injecting nastiness into public life. Limbaugh has responded that Powell is "just another liberal" and should become a Democrat.

Cheney told CBS' "Face the Nation" that "if I had to choose in terms of being a Republican, I'd go with Rush Limbaugh."

Naturally, this is being greeted warmly over at DNC Headquarters.

Powell: 'Can We Continue to Listen to Rush Limbaugh?'

More sage advice from the guy who abandoned his party to vote for an empty suit. And let's face it, if Obama wasn't black, he'd never have endorsed him.

The Republican party must stop "shouting at the world" and start listening to minority groups if it is to win elections in the 21st century, former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday.

In an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria for Sunday's "GPS" program, President Bush's former secretary of state said his party's attempt "to use polarization for political advantage" backfired last month.

"I think the party has to take a hard look at itself," Powell said in the interview, which was taped Wednesday. "There is nothing wrong with being conservative. There is nothing wrong with having socially conservative views — I don't object to that. But if the party wants to have a future in this country, it has to face some realities. In another 20 years, the majority in this country will be the minority."

So what's his solution? Stop listening to Rush Limbaugh.

Great. Well, if the GOP had listened to Rush Limbaugh, they'd never have nominated John McCain. And correct me if I'm wrong, but was it John McCain shouting at the world the last eight years or was it the angry left, the same folks Powell decided to align himself with?

"I think the party has to stop shouting at the world and at the country,"Powell said. "I think that the party has to take a hard look at itself, and I've talked to a number of leaders in recent weeks and they understand that." Powell, who says he still considers himself a Republican, said his party should also stop listening to conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

"Can we continue to listen to Rush Limbaugh?" Powell asked. "Is this really the kind of party that we want to be when these kinds of spokespersons seem to appeal to our lesser instincts rather than our better instincts?"

First of all, Limbaugh isn't a "spokesperson" for the party. If he was, the party wouldn't be in the shape it is. Second, the GOP has bent over backwards pandering to the people Powell insists they pander to and where has it gotten them? Left out in the cold, powerless.

Yes, we sure need to do more of that.

Do us all a favor, General, and register as a Democrat. Align yourself completely with the crooks on the left. The same people who called you a token and a House Negro all these years. See how much they'll listen to you when you tell them it's OK to be a conservative.

Powell: Terrorism Not Greatest Threat to U.S.

On the upside, he didn't say carbon emissions are the top threat, so he's preserving a little bit of credibility. But he's way off base claiming we don't have enough immigrants coming into the country, be they legal or illegal.

He really needs to get out more often.

"What is the greatest threat facing us now? People will say it's terrorism. But are there any terrorists in the world who can change the American way of life or our political system? No. Can they knock down a building? Yes. Can they kill somebody? Yes. But can they change us? No. Only we can change ourselves. So what is the great threat we are facing?"

Powell adds, in an interview with Walter Isaacson, that to improve its image in the world, the USA should focus on welcoming newcomers. He takes on the immigration debate that has become a hot-button issue in the presidential race:

"America could not survive without immigration," he says. "Even the undocumented immigrants are contributing to our economy. That's the country my parents came to. That's the image we have to portray to the rest of the world: kind, generous, a nation of nations, touched by every nation, and we touch every nation in return. That's what people still want to believe about us. They still want to come here. We've lost a bit of the image, but we haven't lost the reality yet. And we can fix the image by reflecting a welcoming attitude -- and by not taking counsel of our fears and scaring ourselves to death that everybody coming in is going to blow up something. It ain't the case."
