Sunday could be a bittersweet first Mother's Day for Casey Greenfield.

Greenfield is a pretty, ginger-haired, Yale-educated lawyer and writer who last March gave birth to a love child. The baby's father is married CNN star and best-selling New Yorker writer Jeffrey Toobin. (Casey's father is esteemed political pundit Jeff Greenfield.) Ever since we broke the news of her pregnancy, Casey has remained silent about the baby drama. But now some of her friends are fed up with what they claim is less-than-gallant behavior on Toobin's part.

Greenfield, now 36, was in her 20s when she fell for Toobin, now 49, even though he was wed to Amy McIntosh, the Harvard sweetheart he'd married in 1986 and who gave him two children.

"Jeff and Casey saw each other off and on over the years," says one source. "She was married to someone else for two years. After her divorce, she started seeing Jeff again. He said he was going to leave his wife for her. But, by then, Casey had begun to distrust him. She suspected he had several other mistresses."

In 2008, when Greenfield became pregnant, and when she told Toobin the news, he offered her "money if she'd have an abortion," says a source. He also allegedly offered to pay for her to have another child later via a sperm donor.

"When Casey wouldn't have an abortion, Jeff told her she was going to regret it, that she shouldn't expect any help from him," claims another source.

Greenfield underwent a risky DNA test while pregnant, but Toobin didn't provide his sample and stopped talking to her, according to sources. On the day she gave birth, Greenfield e-mailed Toobin, inviting him to meet his son, Rory. A source says Toobin didn't reply.

Toobin ultimately cooperated with a DNA test that proved he was Rory's dad. In February, a Manhattan Family Court judge ordered him to pay child support. When he refused to pay the full amount, say sources, Greenfield's lawyer threatened to notify his employers and garnish his wages; Toobin then paid up.

How bad is CNN's position in the news world? A paternity trial involving their top legal analyst is underway and it barely registers a blip. Well, it might garner some notice if Fox News mentions it.

One of the media elite's most whispered-about scandals went public Wednesday when married CNN correspondent Jeffrey Toobin squared off with a woman who says he's the father of her baby.

Yale-educated lawyer Casey Greenfield - the daughter of eminent CBS News analyst Jeff Greenfield - had a chilly faceoff with Toobin in Manhattan Family Court.

The ex-lovers barely spoke in the waiting area before joining their lawyers behind closed doors with a court referee to hash out custody and money issues.

Toobin, who glumly sat several rows away from Casey Greenfield before the hearing, is said to have privately admitted to fathering the child, believed to have been born last summer, sources said.

A friend of Greenfield's said the outspoken Toobin has resisted putting his name on the infant's birth certificate and hasn't given his former lover the child support she's requested.

What a sport.

Vast Left Wing Conspiracy Confirmed

Shocking, isn't it? Well, not really, considering these people all regurgitate the same drivel on a daily basis and couldn't come up with an original idea if their miserable lives depended on it.

For the past two years, several hundred left-leaning bloggers, political reporters, magazine writers, policy wonks and academics have talked stories and compared notes in an off-the-record online meeting space called JournoList.

Proof of a vast liberal media conspiracy?

Not at all, says Ezra Klein, the 24-year-old American Prospect blogging wunderkind who formed JournoList in February 2007. “Basically,” he says, “it’s just a list where journalists and policy wonks can discuss issues freely.”

But some of the journalists who participate in the online discussion say — off the record, of course — that it has been a great help in their work. On the record, The New Yorker’s Jeffrey Toobin acknowledged that a Talk of the Town piece — he won’t say which one — got its start in part via a conversation on JournoList. And JLister Eric Alterman, The Nation writer and CUNY professor, said he’s seen discussions that start on the list seep into the world beyond.

“I’m very lazy about writing when I’m not getting paid,” Alterman said. “So if I take the trouble to write something in any detail on the list, I tend to cannibalize it. It doesn’t surprise me when I see things on the list on people’s blogs.”

Nice to see a hack like Alterman admit he's a lazy sack of shit. Ironic, though, how the media hasn't reported on this?

One byproduct of that secrecy: For all its high-profile membership — which includes Nobel Prize-winning columnist Paul Krugman; staffers from Newsweek, POLITICO, Huffington Post, The New Republic, The Nation and The New Yorker; policy wonks, academics and bloggers such as Klein and Matthew Yglesias — JList itself has received almost no attention from the media.

A LexisNexis search for JournoList reveals exactly nothing. Slate’s Mickey Kaus, a nonmember, may be the only professional writer to have referred to it “in print” more than once — albeit dismissively, as the “Klein Klub.”

While members may talk freely about JList at, say, a Columbia Heights house party, there’s a “Fight Club”-style code of silence when it comes to discussing it for publication.

But a handful of JList members agreed to talk for this story — if only to push back against the perception that the group is some sort of secret, left-wing cabal.

Translation: Please, we know we have zero credibility, but still, try and pretend we're all deep thinkers.

CNN Legal Analyst Jeffrey Toobin Discovers He's Married ... After Fathering Illegitimate Child

CNN legal correspondent Jeffrey Toobin still won't say whether he's the father of flame-haired, very pregnant lawyer Casey Greenfield's love child, but he wants to make one thing perfectly clear - he's a married man!

In what some see as a too-little, too-late, move, Toobin, 48, who also writes for The New Yorker, abruptly adjusted his Facebook profile early yesterday. As of 1:21 a.m., he'd updated his previously blank relationship status to "married." Odd because Toobin has been wed since May 1986 to Amy McIntosh, who went to Harvard with him and bore him two kids, Adam and Ellen.

A friend of Toobin told Page Six, "I can only imagine what prompted him to do that. He's never had his status on there before and is now being congratulated by everyone on his marriage. Which, of course, took place years ago." Gawker.com reports one fan of Toobin wrote him on Facebook: "Don't tell me you were single all this time . . . Damn it!"
