Obama Attempts to Shore Up Hispanic Vote With Important Appointment

In a transparent attempt to recapture some of the Hispanic vote that's been fleeing his Titanic of an administration, Barack Obama decided to appoint Constitutional scholar Shakira to something called the Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. Someone on a commission for educational excellence should first demonstrate some of her own.

"I'm not an expert on the Constitution but I know the constitution exists for a reason," she said. "It exists to protect human beings, to protect the rights of people living in a nation, with or without documents. We're talking about human beings here."

Just what we need: Some bubbleheaded singer weighing in on issues they clearly know nothing about. At least she admits she doesn't have a clue.

Latina pop star Shakira condemned Arizona's new law targeting illegal immigration, saying it promotes discrimination and robs Latinos of human dignity.

Visiting Phoenix City Hall on Thursday, the Colombian-born entertainer told more than 100 members of the media: "I'm in opposition to this law because it is a violation of human and civil rights. It goes against all human dignity, against the principles of most Americans I know.

"As a person and Latina who believes in equal opportunities and who believes that this country has values that I have always admired and defended," she added, "I'm worried about the impact that implementation of this law will have on hard working Latinos."

Uh, what about the impact on law-abiding citizens?

Shakira was joined by Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and local Hispanic leaders.

"I'm not an expert on the Constitution but I know the constitution exists for a reason," she said. "It exists to protect human beings, to protect the rights of people living in a nation, with or without documents. We're talking about human beings here."

Can you please cite for me anything in the Constitution that says undocumented aliens have any rights?

The singer and dancer, sporting stiletto boots, diamond earrings, a wifebeater tank top and black zippered jacket, later visited CPLC Carl Hayden Youth Community Center.

Before a City Hall news conference, Shakira met privately with Gordon, Vice Mayor Michael Nowakowski, Police Chief Jack Harris and other city officials to raise concerns about the law. She argued that Hispanic immigrants have generated economic growth for decades in this country.

"Let's not foster division but unity. Let's not foster chaos but safety," Shakira said. "This law goes against all the principles of prosperity that we know and promotes discrimination and resentment."

Yes, I resent people who don't have a clue telling Americans we have to let hordes of illegal marauders run rampant.

A HIP-SHAKING performance by the pop star Shakira has provoked a showdown between the Afghan government and the country's independent media.

Senior Muslim clerics have joined the culture ministry to warn Tolo TV, the largest private television station, of serious consequences after the broadcast of a concert by the Colombian singer, famous for her onstage gyrations.

The incident is the latest sign of a growing fightback by the country's powerful conservative establishment against the more liberal-minded newspapers and broadcast media and the tide of Western-backed liberal reforms since the fall of the Taliban government in 2001.

Draconian new media legislation is soon to be signed into law by President Hamid Karzai after it was recently approved by parliament. The measures will give the Government greater powers to limit broadcasts that are deemed damaging to Afghanistan and its culture and forcing television stations to carry more religious programs or face going off air.

The Shakira broadcast caused consternation even though she appeared with computer pixellation covering her chest. State television broadcast interviews with clerics and MPs criticising the concert, and one pro-Government newspaper criticised the broadcast, saying it would provoke suicide bombers.

Apparently, they haven't learned yet how to operate a remote control.

It appears some in the goverment already have it in for Tolo TV.

MPs were furious when Tolo TV recently broadcast footage of them nodding off and picking their noses during debates.

As for Shakira, not all viewers were offended.

"Her clothes were very tight," said Sharif, a 41-year-old doorman who watched the concert. "But I had no problem with it."
