Chuckie the Gun-Grabber Recycling Old Material

Longtime enemies of the Second Amendment like Chuckie Schumer never admit defeat and accept the right to bear arms.

In fact, a guy like Schumer just recycles old press conference material in an effort at backdoor gun grabs.

So here is he today calling for the repeal of the Tiahrt Amendment.

New York Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand are calling for the repeal of federal policy requiring records of gun background checks be destroyed after 24 hours.

The Democratic lawmakers say the Tiahrt Amendment restricts police from using gun trace information.

They say such information is crucial to cracking down on illegal gun trafficking and reducing gun violence.

Schumer and Gillibrand are urging President Barack Obama to reinstate a 90-day retention period.

Obama, naturally, is all for it. I guess Schumer figures having someone like Gillibrand, who's purportedly pro-gun, by his side might add some heft to his tired argument. Well, she's already thinking of retaining the seat next year and facing a possible challenge from the vociferously anti-gun Carolyn McCarthy, so I imagine she's already pandering.

Anyway, Schumer's latest stunt had a familiar ring, and sure enough here he was in 2005 exploida buting the shooting of a NYPD officer to advance his agenda by--you guessed it--calling for the repeal of the Tiahrt Amendment.

Let's hope the reaction to today's presser was the same as in 2005--contempt.

"I think it's outrageous that he was blaming Congressman Tiahrt for the death of a New York City police officer when the purpose of the original amendment was to save lives of law enforcement officers and was actually supported by the ATF and the Fraternal Order of Police," the communications director for Rep. Todd Tiahrt, of Kansas, Chuck Knapp, said. "This amendment passed in broad daylight in the House Appropriations Committee."

The chief lobbyist for the National Rifle Association, Chris W. Cox, attacked Mr. Schumer for trying to use the death of Officer Stewart to advance his political agenda.

"It's not surprising that Schumer is out pushing a political agenda right now after a tragic crime, and it's not surprising that he's trying to disregard good public policy," Mr. Cox said. "We'll continue to work with members of Congress and elected officials all over the country and provide them with the facts that counter the bogus claims of Senator Schumer and the gun control lobby."

I reckon a guy like Schumer, who would hold a press conference to announce a can opening, might now and then recycle old material. But have no doubt that this might be any coincidence.

Chuckie wants your guns, and he'll stop at nothing in order to get them.

Sneaky Back Door Gun Grab in Obama Budget?

Keep an eye out for this when Barack Obama releases his budget blueprint later this week. What these Democrats can't accomplish in the open they'll always try to slip through the back door.

"A potential legislative gun rights battle looms today in Washington, D.C.," says Washington senior rights activist John M. Snyder.

"When President Obama submits his budget blueprint this week, reports indicate the proposal may include language designed specifically to repeal the Tiahrt Amendment," says Snyder, named the senior rights activist in Washington by Shotgun News.

"This repeal is an objective long sought by gun-grabbing politicians, the anti-gun Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence and other extremist groups," he added.

The Tiahrt Amendment, named for Rep. Todd Tiahrt of Kansas, is included in the annual appropriations for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives of the U.S. Justice Department. It prohibits gun-grabbing mayors and other repressive officials from obtaining federal gun trace data intended for use only for law enforcement purposes and using the data instead in harassing and costly third-party civil lawsuits against the firearms industry.

Snyder says, "Anti-right to self-defense extremists such as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and others seek to undermine law-abiding Americans' gun rights by making it more and more difficult for them to obtain the firearms they want. Repeal of the Tiahrt Amendment would further their purposes. On Friday, The New York Times editorialized for repeal.

"America's 90 million law-abiding firearm owners oppose attempts to undermine their individual Second Amendment civil right to keep and bear arms. If Obama proposes repeal of Tiahrt, tens of millions of gun-owning voters can be expected to oppose it and make their opposition reverberate in the halls of Congress. There well may be a major congressional battle soon over the issue."

The Democrats have repeatedly lost on gun issues over the years, but they'll never give up trying to disarm the law-abiding public.

Some folks remember what happened the last time Democrats went all out against gun rights and the NRA. It wasn't pretty. Do they Democrats want to revisit that disaster?
