Tony Snow has Passed Away at Age 53

I know Jammie has already posted on this but I wanted to pass on my condolences also.


This was the first thing I heard this morning when I woke up and turned on the TV. It hit me like a shower of cold water. I always respected and admired Tony Snow. He always appeared genuine and warm. I, like most other people became introduced to him from his time on Fox News, and from there I found him on the radio and listened to his show. He had an easy going yet no nonsense style on air. Listening to his radio show I never remember hearing him displaying annoyance or anger at any caller or guest, although at times I was about to pop a blood vessel. He was only 53 years old and he leaves behind a wife and 3 children.

Rest in peace, Tony and my condolences and sympathy go out to his family and those who truly knew him.

Tony Snow, the former White House press secretary and conservative pundit who bedeviled the press corps and charmed millions as a FOX News television and radio host, has died after a long bout with cancer. He was 53.

A syndicated columnist, editor, TV anchor, radio show host and musician, Snow worked in nearly every medium in a career that spanned more than 30 years.

Snow joined FOX in 1996 as the original anchor of FOX News Sunday, and hosted Weekend Live and a radio program, The Tony Snow Show, before departing in 2006. A sometime fill-in host for Rush Limbaugh, Snow said he loved the intimacy of his radio audience.

"It's a tremendous loss for us who knew him, but it's also a loss for the country," Roger Ailes, Chairman of FOX News, said Saturday morning about Snow, calling him a "renaissance man."

As a TV pundit and commentator for FOX News, Snow was often critical of President Bush before he became Bush's third press secretary in 2006, following Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan. He was an instant study in the job, mastering the position — and the White House press corps — with apparent ease.

I'm sure the ghouls on the left will be celebrating.

Tony Snow Resigns

We knew this was coming and we wish him the best.

NBC News has learned that White House Press Secretary Tony Snow will step down Sept. 14 as the president's chief spokesman and the public face of the White House. Dana Perino is expected to replace him.

He is expected to make his announcement during today's on-camera White House briefing at 12:45pm. President Bush is expected to make a statement at the briefing. Snow formally informed the president yesterday.

NBC apparently learned it from ABC, where I first heard it.

Of paramount concern is his health and family, obviously.

The announcement is already being met with compassion from the usual circles.

Conservative Anger Surprised Bush

For some bizarre reason, President Bush was taken aback that conservatives reacted furiously at his remarks criticizing his core base of supporters for their stance on the amnesty bill.

President Bush did not intend to single out his conservative supporters for criticism in a speech on immigration reform last week and was "surprised" that his remarks angered Republicans, White House spokesman Tony Snow said today.

"He was surprised by the reaction," Mr. Snow said of Mr. Bush's speech in Glynco, Ga., last week. "The speech in Georgia was, 'We've got a serious problem and we need to fix it.' It was not in any way designed to be pointed at Republicans."

But conservative opponents of a Senate immigration bill supported by Mr. Bush reacted furiously to the president's suggestion that they are resorting to scare tactics by using the word "amnesty" in referring to the measure that would allow millions of illegal aliens to remain in the United States.

"Those determined to find fault with this bill will always be able to look at a narrow slice of it and find something they don't like," Mr. Bush said in the May 29 speech about the legislation now being debated in the Senate. "If you want to kill the bill, if you don't want to do what's right for America, you can pick one little aspect out of it, you can use it to frighten people. Or you can show leadership and solve this problem once and for all."

Some Republicans on Capitol Hill said that Mr. Bush seemed to be questioning their patriotism, and several conservative activists said the president was splitting the Republican Party by insulting those who have been his most loyal supporters.

Sure. Throw your last group of supporters under the bus and then it comes as a shock when they react negatively.

Well, he can do one thing to win back a small measure of support. Vow never to sign this shamnesty into law.

Mr. Snow's defense of the president's remarks shows that "the White House is in denial about this issue," said longtime conservative publicist Craig Shirley, an opinion shared by American Conservative Union Chairman David A. Keene.

"The plain meaning of what he said was clear," Mr. Keene said.

"Tony and others within the administration had been urging conservatives prior to the president's remarks to give Bush the benefit of the doubt as far as motives are concerned and to keep the debate civil. 'After all,' [Mr. Snow] said at a meeting I attended, 'at the end of the day we're all on the same team.'

"So it's easy to see why he's in denial," Mr. Keene said, "but the president's prepared remarks and some of the things he has said make it clear that conservatives, or at least those with the temerity to disagree with the White House line [on immigration], are no longer welcome on the team."

Tony Snow Returns

Tony Snow is back on the job at the White House.

White House press secretary Tony Snow was back on the job Monday, five weeks after doctors discovered a recurrence of his cancer. He said he would soon undergo chemotherapy "just to make sure we've got the thing knocked out."

Snow, 51, has been on medical leave since undergoing exploratory surgery last month, when doctors discovered that a growth in his abdominal area was cancerous and had metastasized, or spread, to the liver.

I'm sure all those nice commenters at The Huffington Post who wished death upon him are sorely disappointed today.

Tony Snow's Cancer Has Returned

Terribly sad news.

Presidential spokesman Tony Snow's surgery to remove a small growth showed that his cancer has returned, the White House said Tuesday.

Snow, 51, had his colon removed in 2005 and underwent six months of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with colon cancer. A small growth was discovered last year in his lower right pelvic area, and it was removed on Monday. Doctors determined that it was cancerous, and that his cancer had metastized, or spread, to his liver, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said.

She said Snow is resting comfortably after his surgery and has pledged to aggressively fight the disease with an as-yet-to-be-determined treatment course.

Presidential spokesman Tony Snow is undergoing surgery Monday to remove a small growth in his lower abdomen, a procedure he said was being done "out of an aggressive sense of caution" because he had colon cancer two years ago.

He said Friday that cancer tests have been negative since the growth - about the size of the tip of his small finger - was discovered in his lower right pelvic area, but that doctors decided to remove it to be sure.

"Please do not leap to conclusions about this because we don't know what this is," Snow told reporters. "We know it's coming out and I know I'll be back soon."

Snow, 51, had his colon removed in 2005 and underwent six months of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with colon cancer. He and his wife have three young children.
