Pigeon Busted for Drug Smuggling

One has to figure there's a stool pigeon involved here somewhere.

Prison guards grew suspicious when they saw "four prisoners visibly intoxicated shortly after the pigeon landed on a prison window," said Josip Pojavnik, deputy warden of Zenica prison.

The pigeon was a pet of one of the inmates. When he and three other prisoners in jail tested positive for heroin, disciplinary proceedings were launched.

It is thought that the drugs were stuffed into tiny bags and attached to the pigeon's legs.

"We suspect that the pigeon carried the drugs from Tuzla", a town around 70 kilometres more than 40 miles northeast of Zenica in central Bosnia, added Pojavnik.

The pigeon is now in custody while police investigate who might have loaded it with drugs.

"We do not know what to do with the pigeon, but for the time being it will remain behind bars," Pojavnik said.

How about maybe a little torture and interrogation?

Seems as if this is not an isoltaed incident.

A similar case of carrier pigeons being used by prisoners was reportedly uncovered earlier this year at a jail in Brazil, where the birds were being used to deliver drugs and even mobile telephones.

Prisoners in Zenica serve sentences for serious crimes such as murder, drug dealing, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Amnesty International has complained in the past about conditions at the prison.

When we last noted the pigeon menace in New York, celebrated Councilman James Oddo was suggesting putting the flying rats on birth control.

Now another member of the august body known as the New York City Council is looking to put the burden for this urban menace upon those most responsible for this plague--the people who feed them.

If one Brooklyn lawmaker has his way, New Yorkers who toss crumbs and seeds to pigeons would be hit with a $1,000 fine.

Brandishing pictures of a subway station soiled by pigeon poo, Councilman Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) said he's introducing a bill to ban pigeon feeding, with the goal of slashing the city's population of the birds.

"If people like pigeons, take them into their homes . . . and let them crap all over the place in your living room," Felder said outside City Hall.

The legislation faces an uphill battle in the council.

Bakeries will be hardest hit by the proposed legislation.

"Once the enforcement is out, we hope that the people who are spending their time collecting old bread from bakeries . . . will stop. I find that people who feed pigeons are not feeding them in their homes," Felder said.

We need more politicians with such powers of observation.

Naturally, like most New Yorkers, Felder recommends exporting the problem west of the Hudson.

"[The pigeons] may go elsewhere. Let them go to New Jersey."
