Iraqi suicide bomber kills 20

A suicide bomber detonated an explosive at a police recruitment center in Fallujah, Iraq, yesterday, killing at least 15 people and injuring 12 in the latest attempt by militants to break the shakily improving security scenario in Al Anbar province, according to the police and a witness.

The number of police recruits in the region has risen rapidly because of a recent strategic decision by area tribal sheiks to turn away from al-Qaida in Iraq and urge their members to join the Iraqi security forces.

On a typical day six months ago, four men appeared. Today, "dozens" of applicants are showing up, forcing the police to add facilities, said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a U.S. military spokesman.
