DHAKA, Bangladesh - A 40-year-old Bangladeshi woman cut off a man's penis during an alleged attempted rape and took it to a police station as evidence, police in a remote part of the country said Monday.

The woman, a married mother of three, was attacked Saturday night while she was sleeping in her shanty in Jhalakathi district, some 120 miles south of Dhaka, officers said.

"As he tried to rape her, the lady cut his penis off with a knife. She then wrapped up the penis in a piece of polythene and brought it to the Jhalakathi police station as evidence of the crime," police chief Abul Khaer said.

The woman filed a case accusing the man -- who is also 40 and a married father of five -- of attempted rape, saying that he harassed her for six months.

The severed penis was kept at the police station, and the rape suspect was undergoing treatment in the hospital.

Rape suspect? Well, here's hoping she got the right guy.

Global Warming as Peacemaker

Who said mythical global warming did nothing but harm? This pile of rocks with some trees on it apparently has been the source of a long-running feud between India and Bangladesh, but thanks to "rising sea levels" of a fifth of an inch a year, this land mass, known as New Moore Island, is now mostly submerged.

At last there will be peace in our time. We can now officially rename it No More Island. Requisite Al Gore hysteria sure to follow.

For nearly 30 years, India and Bangladesh have argued over control of a tiny rock island in the Bay of Bengal.

Now rising sea levels have resolved the dispute for them: the island's gone.

New Moore Island in the Sunderbans has been completely submerged, said oceanographer Sugata Hazra, a professor at Jadavpur University in Calcutta.

Its disappearance has been confirmed by satellite imagery and sea patrols, he said. "What these two countries could not achieve from years of talking, has been resolved by global warming," said Hazra.

Scientists at the School of Oceanographic Studies at the university have noted an alarming increase in the rate at which sea levels have risen over the past decade in the Bay of Bengal.

Until 2000, the sea levels rose about 3 millimeters (0.12 inches) a year, but over the last decade they have been rising about 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) annually, he said.

Another nearby island, Lohachara, was submerged in 1996, forcing its inhabitants to move to the mainland, while almost half the land of Ghoramara island was underwater, he said.

At least 10 other islands in the area were at risk as well, Hazra said.

"We will have ever larger numbers of people displaced from the Sunderbans as more island areas come under water," he said.

Bangladesh, a low-lying delta nation of 150 million people, is one of the countries worst-affected by global warming.

Bangladesh has been affected by a lot more than just global warming, but if these jokers wants to blame decades of misery on the climate, have at it. Maybe it's time for another benefit concert.

Officials estimate 18 percent of Bangladesh's coastal area will be underwater and 20 million people will be displaced if sea levels rise 1 meter (3.3 feet) by 2050 as projected by some climate models.

Oh yeah, climate models. We all know how reliable they've turned out to be.

As to what's purported to be New Moore Island in the photo above, I saw scenes similar to that in North Jersey after heavy rains a couple of weeks ago, and somehow we managed to overcome that long weekend of climate change.

Bangladeshi Baby Born With Two Heads

Yikes.

Police have been called in to control the crowds after a two-headed baby was born in Bangladesh.

More than 150,000 people - almost double the size of the crowds at Wembley Stadium - have surrounded a hospital after news spread that a baby boy had been born with two heads.

Police were called in to control the masses as the baby was moved from one hospital to another for security reasons.

Officials feared that unless the baby was moved from the clinic in Bangladesh, where he was born, to a more secure hospital, the crowd would force their way in to gaze at the amazing sight.

If that happened, it was feared, mother and baby would be crushed.

In the past babies born with physical abnormalities have been viewed in countries such as Bangladesh and India as living gods.

Last night the boy, named Kiron, was under police protection as doctors tried to determine whether he had any future.

Kiron was born in a caesarean operation on Monday, weighing 5.5kg, in Keshobpur, 100 miles from the capital, Dhaka.

'He has one stomach and he is eating normally with his two mouths,' said gynaecologist Mohamad Abdul Bari.

'He has one genital organ and a full set of limbs.'

Police halt B'desh protest over magazine cartoon

Baton-wielding police broke up a protest by hundreds of Islamists in the Bangladeshi capital on Wednesday against a magazine which published a cartoon they said hurt Muslims' religious feelings, witnesses said.

Poor little Muslims. Such delicate sensibilities. It's a wonder how they summon the courage to chop off heads on a regular basis.

Police waded in to halt a march by about 500 demonstrators chanting "death to the editor" and "hang the cartoonist" near Dhaka's national mosque.

Police said the march could not go ahead under the current state of emergency, imposed when an army-backed interim government took charge in January after months of political violence.

The protest came two days after the offending cartoon was printed in "Alpin", a weekly magazine published by Prothom Alo, the country's leading Bangla-language daily.

Police arrested the cartoonist, Arifur Rahman, at his Dhaka home on Tuesday, after Muslim religious leaders complained.

I see a parallel growing in the United States. Muslim "leaders" whine about the slightest of alleged offenses and the authorities hop to it.

The Information Ministry said it had seized copies of the offending magazine issue.

The interim government has pledged to punish the offenders, but urged the people to remain calm and show patience.

Good luck with that. Patience is definitely not a strong suit of the bloodthirsty Islamofascists.

"Definitely it is a conspiracy to ignite unrest in the country. The government will punish the offenders," Mainul Husein, adviser to the interim government in charge of the law and information ministries, told Muslim leaders on Tuesday.
