Where Are the Apologies to the Duke Lacrosse Players?

Thomas Sowell wonders when all those who convicted the Duke lacrosse players in the media will man up and apologize.

I wouldn't waste time waiting.

The New York Times, which splashed these Duke students' pictures on the front page, along with inflammatory charges against them, and went ballistic on its editorial page, carried the story of Nifong's disbarment for prosecuting them on page 16.

The 88 Duke University faculty members who took out a hysterical ad, supporting those local loudmouths who were denouncing and threatening the Duke students, have apparently had nothing at all to say now.

Not only did many Duke University professors join the lynch mob atmosphere, so did the Duke University administration, which got rid of the lacrosse coach and cancelled the team's season, without a speck of evidence that anybody was guilty of anything.

This is one of the few times when Jesse Jackson is speechless, even though he was loudly supporting the bogus "rape" charges last year.

One of the pillars of liberalism is never having to admit you were wrong. You just latch onto another phony cause and pretend your previous misdeeds never happened.

The Duke 88, The New York Times and Jesse Jackson all have some things in common. They lack human decency, credibility, honesty and maturity. In other words, they're perfect liberals.

Don't expect any of these people to recant or apologize. But be aware of how wide and how deep the moral dry rot goes.

That such people are teaching students at an elite university is a chilling thought. That they promote a campus atmosphere where political correctness trumps the search for truth is painful.

Disgraced Hack Nifong Resigns

What a worm.

Raleigh — The man who pursued rape, sexual assault and kidnapping charges against three former Duke lacrosse players who were later declared innocent by North Carolina's attorney general says he will resign.

"Throughout the years I have served as a prosecutor I have always tried to do the right thing," a tearful Mike Nifong said. "In this case, I was trying to do the right thing. Much of the criticism directed to me in the is case is justified. The allegations that I'm a liar, however, are not justified."

Nifong made the announcement during his testimony Friday at his State Bar ethics trial to the surprise of the families and defense attorneys of the cleared lacrosse players, as well as others.

Some of Nifong's staff said they were surprised to hear the announcement and heard it on television while they watched his testimony.

Where Are They Tonight?

The charges against the three innocent Duke University lacrosse players were finally dropped today, but this is far from over. Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and David Evans handled themselves with class and grace today, but there are plenty of folks out there who need to answer to the public. Naturally, they're all scurrying for cover.

Where is The Group of 88 tonight?

The agenda-driven group of Duke professors who declared the guilt of the lacrosse players before justice could take its turn are nowhere to be found, safely ensconced in their ivory towers, likely all tenured, with nobody to answer to. Just so you know, look at where they come from:

Thinking of sending your kids to Duke and want them to be properly educated? Avoid those areas of study.

The smug, sanctimonious group of Duke professors had an agenda, were quick to accuse and convict, yet are all now silent.

Where is Mike Nifong tonight?

The disgraced DA is staring at disbarment and criminal charges and deserves no mercy. Make sure to review the news accounts about Nifong. See how many mention he's a Democrat.

Where is Jesse Jackson tonight?

No doubt shaking someone down, the mumblemouthed charlatan. How's that scholarship for the accuser working out, you fraud?

Where is Al Sharpton tonight?

Ironically, the mastermind behind the Tawana Brawley hoax is busy picking over the corpse of the hapless Don Imus, now permanently jettisoned from MSNBC.

Where is Crystal Gail Mangum tonight?

Who knows? I'd call her a nappy-headed 'ho, but then some race hustlers might come after me.

A sidenote on this case: This morning I heard an ABC News radio account using the disgraced Linda Fairstein as a "legal analyst", commenting on this case. She had the gall to ask "where do they go to get their reputations back?", invoking former Labor Secretary Raymond Donovan. Fairstein has some nerve bringing that up after what she did to Oliver Jovanovic.

This travesty has left permanent scars upon Finnerty, Evans, Seligmann and the entire Duke lacrosse program. It's not too much to ask that the perpetrators of this fraud be rightly punished.

Duke Professors Free to Smear

While it appears the Duke rape case has unraveled and the unctuous Mike Nifong is headed for disbarment, those who sit in their lofty ivory towers are still free to smear with impunity.

John Podhoretz reminds us that academic freedom means there really never is any price to pay when you slander people.

Yet some of the most disgraceful actors in this case will go unpunished.

I'm referring to a huge cohort of the professors at the top-flight university attended by the three unjustly accused men.

Some 88 of them - more than 10 percent of the entire Duke professoriat - engaged in a shocking rush to judgment in the weeks following the party where the accuser falsely alleged she had been raped.

They signed an ad declaring they were "turning up the volume at a moment when some of the most vulnerable among us are being asked to quiet down."

Their shameful conduct helped create the lynch-mob atmosphere that tempted and seduced DA Nifong to believe he could ride an indictment of the three young men to political victory in the Democratic primary that took place only weeks after he charged them.

It is not too much to say that many of the adults at Duke, who should be stewards for their students, actually wanted the false rape story to be true because it fulfilled their ideological predilections.

Since the academic work of those who organized the ad centers around the notion that the white male power structure subjugates and violates all those who are neither white nor male, the case was actually a dream come true for them.
