Military forces loyal to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, who have surrounded this city and vowed to crush its anti-Qaddafi rebellion, have been firing into residential neighborhoods with heavy weapons, including cluster bombs that have been banned by much of the world and ground-to-ground rockets, according to the accounts of witnesses and survivors and physical evidence on the ground.According to sources, the shelling of civilians began between Obama's second and third fundraisers last night, not between the first and second as initially reported.
Such “indiscriminate” weapons, which strike large areas with a dense succession of high-explosive munitions, by their nature cannot be fired precisely, and when fired into populated areas place civilians at grave risk.
The use of such weapons could also add urgency to the NATO campaign, which has as its mandate protecting civilians from the Qaddafi regime’s harm. And it could place pressure on the United States, which pulled back air power from the war when it ceded control of the campaign to NATO earlier this month.
When asked about the munitions at a news conference in Berlin, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she was “not aware” of the specific use of cluster or other heavy weapons in Misurata, but said, “I’m not surprised by anything that Colonel Qadaffi and his forces do.”
She added: “That is worrying information. And it is one of the reasons the fight in Misurata is so difficult, because it’s at close quarters, it’s in amongst urban areas and it poses a lot of challenges to both NATO and to the opposition.”
The cluster munitions were visible in use late Thursday night, in the form of what appeared to be 120-millimeter mortar rounds that burst in the air over the city, scattering high-explosive bomblets below.

Remember, we're not going to stand by and allow the slaughter of civilians or something.

'We Are Now Reaching a Point of Decision, Very Clearly, On What Happens Next'
Of course "what happens next" will likely be the convening of a focus group to examine what to do next. That or they'll send a strongly-worded letter warning of dire consequences if the opinion of the world community isn't adhered to.
Here in America, what happens next is our fearless leader fills out his NCAA brackets before hitting the links again. The rest of the world, meanwhile, dithers and worry about the fine print.
Maybe they're just afraid of offending someone.

William Hague today said the international community is approaching a 'point of decision' on military intervention in Libya.By the time they rush to make a decision, Khadafy's forces will be in mop-up mode.
The Foreign Secretary, who is meeting fellow G8 foreign ministers in Paris tonight, also hinted the Government may consider arming rebels.
'We are now reaching a point of decision, very clearly, on what happens next,' he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.
'Clearly a no-fly zone is one of the leading propositions. It isn't the answer to everything but it has been called for by the Arab League and is something which the international community must now consider.'
Mr Hague made clear that although a UN resolution backing a no-fly zone would be the simplest option, nations could still act under international law without one.
'In cases of great, overwhelming humanitarian need, then nations are able to act under international law, even without a resolution of the Security Council,' he said.
His comments came after former foreign secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind for an 'open and urgent' supply of weapons to the rebels, to avoid repeating the 'mistake' of the Bosnian war in the 1990s.
Sir Malcolm said: 'Having been defence secretary at the time I have, in retrospect, felt that (the arms embargo) was the most serious mistake made by the UN.'
Mr Hague said all arms exports to Libya - including to the rebels - are subject to a UN embargo, although he suggested that that could change.
'I wouldn't exclude various possibilities on this score,' he said. 'I think Malcolm Rifkind makes a very good case. Again, this is the kind of subject which has to be discussed with our international partners.'
Analysts believe there is a very real possibility that Gaddafi's forces will have already secured victory by the time any global response is agreed. Our Secretary of State is scheduled to talk some more today. She's great at talking. Making decisions, that's the tough part.

Flashback: Colonel Gadhafi Khadafy Qaddafi Praises Obama's Foreign Fundraising Prowess
Interesting the gems one can unearth with this here Internet thing. Thanks, Algore!
In June, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi gave a public speech praising Obama, claiming foreign nationals were donating to his campaign. “All the people in the Arab and Islamic world and in Africa applauded this man,” the Libyan leader said. “They welcomed him and prayed for him and for his success, and they may have even been involved in legitimate contribution campaigns to enable him to win the American presidency…”But hey, let's look at the upside. At least none of this funny money came from those evil Koch Brothers.
[O]n July 31 that donors from the Gaza strip had contributed $33,000 to the Obama campaign through bulk purchases of T-shirts they had shipped to Gaza…. A pair of Palestinian brothers named Hosam and Monir Edwan contributed more than $31,300 to the Obama campaign in October and November 2007, FEC records show. Their largesse attracted the attention of the FEC almost immediately. In an April 15, 2008, report that examined the Obama campaign’s year-end figures for 2007, the FEC asked that some of these contributions be reassigned. The Obama camp complied sluggishly, prompting a more detailed admonishment form the FEC on July 30. The Edwan brothers listed their address as “GA,” as in Georgia, although they entered “Gaza” or “Rafah Refugee camp” as their city of residence on most of the online contribution forms…. The latest Obama campaign filing shows that $891.11 still has not been refunded to the Edwan brothers, despite repeated FEC warnings and campaign claims that all the money was refunded in December.

Khadafy Blames Koch Brothers for Libyan Unrest
Think that sounds insane? Just as nutty as blaming them for everything else under the sun, as has become the left's latest obsession. But considering hos nutty madman Moammar has sounded of late, it can't be far off.LIBYAN leader Muammar Gaddafi said protesters should return to their homes, as he made an audio address on state TV today.Meanwhile, a little flashback from the Libyan nutcase.
Gaddafi claimed rebels of drug-taking and links to Usama bin Laden.
He accused protesters of being under the influence of al Qaeda and taking drugs as he made the statement, apparently from the town of Zawiyah, which has been the scene of heavy fighting throughout the day.
He said, "Teenagers feel trigger happy, they shoot especially when they get stoned with drugs."
He said, "Now, ruling America is a black man from our continent, an African from Arab descent, from Muslim descent, and this is something we never imagined – that from Reagan we would get to Barakeh Obama."
Gaddafi stressed that Obama's presidency is "a major historical gain" and said, "He is someone I consider a friend. He knows he is a son of Africa. Regardless of his African belonging, he is of Arab Sudanese descent, or of Muslim descent. He is a man whose policy should be supported, and he should be assisted in implementing it in any way possible, since he is now leaning towards peace."

Venezuela's Chavez to Move into Gaddafi Tent
I had no idea these two were an item. Still, Hugo, don't you two want to find out if you're compatible before you move in together? Oh wait, maybe it's just platonic.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says he is going to govern temporarily from a tent so that families made homeless by recent floods can take refuge in his office.
Mr Chavez said he would have a Bedouin tent given to him by the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi put up in the garden of the presidential palace.
Twenty-five families are already living in the palace after losing their homes.
The floods have made more than 100,000 people homeless across the country.
"Put up Gaddafi's gift," said Mr Chavez during a visit to a refuge for flood victims close to the Miraflores palace in Caracas.
"You can install it in the garden at Miraflores because I'm going to move into the tent. We can put some beds in my office."
Mr Chavez is an admirer of Col Gaddafi, who lives in a huge Bedouin tent in Libya, and brought one with him when he visited Venezuela last year.

Obama Using Gadhafi's Big Tent
I. Can. Not. Believe. This.Who the hell is running the show at the White House? Obama is going to hold a state dinner outside in a tent. What the hell? Is Gadhafi his hero or something?
The purpose of state dinners is to show off the White House and to lavish your guests with good food in a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by the accouterments of your office. Instead, he is going to have the Indian Prime Minister and a bunch of Hollywood celebs kibitzing in a tent on the lawn of the White House.
Whereas President George W. Bush would hold his 140-person dinners in the formal state dining room, the Obamas have broken with recent tradition by taking a "big tent" approach that will accommodate 400.Bowing to Asian leaders, going on a worldwide apology tour, unable to make a decision on how fast he wants to surrender in Afghanistan and now treating other heads of state like some sort of homeless person at a Thanksgiving meal have certainly sealed his credentials as the Worst President Evah.
Secrecy surrounds the event with the White House jealously guarding details of the guest list and menu, though produce from Mrs Obama's new vegetable garden is expected to be used and curry is suspected by some to be on the menu for the first time.
No, he is not using Gadhafi's tent, but the parallels couldn't be more apparent.
UPDATE: Just adding more insult to injury I found this picture on the front page of the Drudge Report.

For those not familiar with flag etiquette, the United States flag is never to be flown lower then another country's flag and it should never be dipped. When it is displayed alongside flags of other nations it must be the same height or higher. The flag as depicted in this picture is dipped, think of it as a bow.

Gadhafi: Obama Suffers Inferiority Complex That Might Make Him Behave 'Whiter Than the White'
Here's another one who claims Barack Obama is a Muslim. Maybe the Obama people can add this to their silly Fight the Smears website after they shoot down the rumors being spread by Obama's half-brother.
Does he realize he sounds as crazy as Gore Vidal?Mu'ammar Al-Qadhafi: It has been proven that there is no democracy in [the U.S.]. Rather, it is a dictatorship no different than the dictatorships of Hitler, Napoleon, Mussolini, Genghis Khan, Alexander the Great, and the rest of the tyrants. In the days of crazy Reagan, the American president issued a presidential order to launch a war against Libya, for example, a presidential order to besiege Libya, a presidential order to boycott Libya, and so on. Is this a democracy or a dictatorship?
There are elections in America now. Along came a black citizen of Kenyan African origins, a Muslim, who had studied in an Islamic school in Indonesia. His name is Obama. All the people in the Arab and Islamic world and in Africa applauded this man. They welcomed him and prayed for him and for his success, and they may have even been involved in legitimate contribution campaigns to enable him to win the American presidency. But we were taken by surprise when our African Kenyan brother, who is an American national, made statements that shocked all his supporters in the Arab world, in Africa, and in the Islamic world. We hope that this is merely an elections "clearance sale," as they say in Egypt – in other words, merely an elections lie. As you know, this is the farce of elections – a person lies and lies to people, just so that they will vote for him, and afterwards, when they say to him: :"You promised this and that," he says: "No, this was just elections propaganda." This is the farce of democracy for you. He says: "This was propaganda, and you thought I was being serious. I was fooling you to get your votes."The video can be seen here.
Allah willing, it will turn out that this was merely elections propaganda. Obama said he would turn Jerusalem into the eternal capital of the Israelis. This indicates that our brother Obama is ignorant of international politics, and is not familiar with the Middle East conflict.
[...]
The thing we fear most is that the black man suffers from an inferiority complex. This is dangerous. If our brother Obama feels that because he is black he doesn't have the right to rule America, this would be a disaster, because such a feeling would make him behave whiter than the white, and go to an extreme in his persecution and degradation of the blacks.
[...]
We say to him: Brother, the whites and blacks in America are equal. They are all immigrants. America belongs neither to the whites nor to the blacks. America belongs to its original inhabitants, the Indians. Both the whites and the blacks immigrated to America, and so they are equal, and Obama has the right to hold his head high, and say: "I am a partner in America. This is my land as much as it is yours. If it is not my land, it is not yours either. It is the land of the Indians. You are immigrants, and so are we."
[...]
We still hope that this black man will take pride in his African and Islamic identity, and in his faith, and that [he will know] that he has rights in America, and that he will change America from evil to good, and that America will establish relations that will serve it well with other peoples, especially the Arabs.

Such a mensch, Sarkozy
Adolph Eichmann is laughing his ass off.Nuclear deal signed as Sarkozy hosts Kadhafi
During Kadhafi's highest-profile foreign trip to Paris, an historic deal has been signed between the two countries
France announced plans to sell nuclear reactors to Libya as well as 10 billion euros of trade deals, as President Nicolas Sarkozy welcomed Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi on Monday for a five-day visit.
Kadhafi arrived earlier in Paris on his highest-profile foreign trip since his return to international respectability four years ago, which has drawn protests from French rights groups and the government's own rights minister.
Travelling with a delegation of several hundred people Kadhafi -- who last visited the French capital in 1973 -- was driven in a white limousine from the airport straight to a meeting with Sarkozy.
Later at the Elysee Palace, the two countries announced the nuclear cooperation accord and some 3.2 billion euros (4.7 billion dollars) of contracts for European planemaker Airbus -- for 21 aircraft purchased by Libyan Airlines and Afriqiyah Airways.
Paris and Tripoli agreed to work together to develop the "peaceful use of nuclear energy", including "the supply of one or more nuclear reactors for the desalinisation of sea water" and uranium exploration and exploitation.
The accord follows a memorandum signed in Tripoli in July during a visit by Sarkozy, immediately after Libya agreed to release six Bulgarian medics jailed on charges of infecting children with HIV/AIDS.

Al-Zawarhi Threatens Libya
This is getting comical. Now cave-dwelling psychopath Ayman al-Zawahri is issuing threats to another psychopath, Moammar Gadhafi.
All is no rosy in Islamofascist circles.
Al-Qaida's No. 2 figure harshly criticized Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in a new audio tape Saturday, accusing him of being an enemy of Islam and threatening a wave of attacks against the North African country because it improved relations with the U.S.
In the 28-minute audio tape called "Unity of the Ranks," Ayman al-Zawahri also announced that the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group was joining ranks with al-Qaida.
"The Islamic nation is witnessing a blessed step ... The brothers are escalating the confrontation against the enemies of Islam: Gadhafi and his masters, the Washington crusaders," al-Zawahri said in the audio tape. The recording could not be independently verified, but it appeared on a Web site commonly used by insurgents and carried the logo of al-Qaida's media production house, as-Sahab.
The recording also carried a message from Abu Laith al-Libi, a Libyan al-Qaida commander in Afghanistan who accused Gadhafi of decades of tyranny.
"He is the tyranny of Libya and is dragging the country to the swamp," al-Libi said in the recording that also featured old video footage of him walking with other masked gunmen.
"After long years, he (Gadhafi) discovered suddenly that America is not an enemy ... and is turning Libya into another crusader base," said al-Libi, who has appeared in several recent al-Qaida videos.
