Remember this image? Can you believe it's 15 years already?O.J. Simpson is headed to prison for at least nine years, but a prosecutor says the former football star could have spent less time behind bars if he had accepted a plea deal before he was convicted.
Clark County District Attorney David Roger said Simpson was offered a deal for less prison time than the nine- to 33-year prison terms the graying former football star was sentenced to on Friday for kidnapping and assaulting two sports memorabilia dealers with a deadly weapon.
"Mr. Simpson wanted something just short of a public apology," Roger said. "We didn't think that was appropriate."
Roger did not offer specifics of the deal and Simpson's defense lawyers declined to discuss details.
ALL the way to his guilty verdict, O.J. Simpson was complaining he's a victim of racism. As a Las Vegas jury last week deliberated armed-robbery charges, a spy reports Simpson told one associate: "This is really depressing. I feel like I'm back in the '50s - a black man in a white justice system."Hey, now he knows how the rest of us felt back in 1995.
"We are thrilled," said Fred Goldman, whose son was slain alongside Nicole in Los Angeles in 1994. "Hopefully, he can go away for the rest of his life.
"He's not [been found] guilty of the right crime. But he's guilty," he added.
Gloria Allred, who has represented the Brown family, said "O.J. Simpson is finally being held accountable for his crime.
"O.J. Simpson's favorite song appeared to be 'If I Only Had a Brain,' " Allred said. "If he only had a brain, he would never have committed the crime he did in Las Vegas. And if he only had a heart, he would never have killed Nicole and Ron Goldman."
Fred Goldman was in Ohio and his daughter Kim, Ron's sister, was in Los Angeles when the verdict came down. They were on the phone together hanging on every word from the courtroom, said family spokesman Michael Wright.
"Kim was telling me that she felt joyous one moment, and then she would break down and cry, and then she would feel joyous again," Wright said.
Goldman told The Post his elation was tempered by the belief that the word "guilty" should have been said to the former football great 13 years ago in LA and not Friday night in Vegas.
A jury convicted O.J. Simpson of armed robbery and kidnapping late Friday night, 13 years to the day after he was acquitted of killing his ex-wife and her friend in Los Angeles.
Simpson and his codefendant, Clarence Stewart, were both convicted on all 12 counts. As the court clerk read "guilty" 24 times shortly before 11 p.m., Simpson grimaced and then nodded slightly, quickly regaining his composure. From the gallery, his sister, Carmelita Durio, wept on a friend's shoulder.
Both defendants were handcuffed and taken into custody. Durio's weeping became wailing as marshals escorted Simpson from the courtroom.
The verdicts mean that Simpson, 61, faces a possible life sentence for a six-minute confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers last year at a down-market casino hotel. Sentencing will be Dec. 5.
The Las Vegas courtroom scene stood in marked contrast to the conclusion of Simpson's 1995 trial, when he smiled broadly and mouthed his thanks to the Los Angeles jury as the stunned families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman wept.
WASHINGTON - The nation is sharply polarized over O.J. Simpson's armed robbery case, with whites far likelier than blacks to say the former football great is guilty of the charges and is being treated fairly, according to a poll released Thursday. So majorities of both blacks and whites think Simpson is guilty, but since a greater majority of whites believe so, there's a great racial division?
By 70 percent to 10 percent, whites said they believe the charges against Simpson are true, according to the Associated Press-Ipsos poll. Blacks were far more divided, though still tilting slightly toward believing he is guilty, 41 percent to 37 percent.
About three-quarters of whites said they believe Simpson has been treated fairly by the Las Vegas authorities who arrested him earlier this month on charges of seizing sports memorabilia items at gunpoint from two men in a hotel room. By about the same number, whites also said they think Simpson will receive a fair trial.

LAS VEGAS - Police say they have arrested O.J. Simpson on charges related to the armed robbery of sport memorabilia.
Simpson was arrested shortly after 11 a.m. and is being brought back to a police office, Capt. James Dillon said.
Several police officers were seen Sunday entering the hotel where Simpson is staying in Las Vegas. A security guard said police took Simpson out a side door shortly after.
The arrest came after police also arrested a 46-year-old Arizona man, Walter Alexander, on Saturday night.
