Noted Domestic Terrorist Afforded Security By Forces He Previously Tried To Kill

The domestic terrorist I am talking about is Obama confidante and frequent house guestn William Ayers, a co-founder of the extremist anti-war group of the 60's named the Weather Underground.

Ayers gave a speech about education at the University of Wyoming yesterday, and it wound up being yet another example of the restraint of the right in comparison to how the jack-booted, immature and, in general, threatening nature of those on the left who constantly protest conservative figures and attempt to deny them their First Amendment rights.

Compare the treatment that Mr. Ayers received to how people such as Karl Rove, Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter or members of the Tea Party are treated. The differences couldn't be more stark.

But the event, which included bag and coat searches and bomb-sniffing dogs, was held without any incidents at a campus gym that normally hosts volleyball and wrestling matches.

Ayers co-founded the Weather Underground, an anti-war group from the Vietnam Era that claimed to be responsible for a series of bombings, including nonfatal explosions at the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol.

How ironic is it that Ayers availed himself of the very protection afforded him by agencies which in the 60's he railed against and indeed try to kill by the use of bombs.

The hourlong question session that followed also mainly dealt with education issues, and people began to trickle out of the gym. But to a few questions on his Weather Underground days, Ayers acknowledged that some of its actions were despicable and set a bad example. But he stressed that that was in the context of thousands of people being killed each week in Vietnam.

The reaction to his appearance contrasted with a visit by former Vice President Dick Cheney in September after donating $3.2 million to help build an international center on campus.

Cheney was welcomed by the college administration with open arms, but heckled during his remarks by about 100 protesters in a crowd of about 500.

When Ayers spoke, he had no interruptions from about a dozen protesters among the roughly 1,100 people who showed up.

I am glad that the reporter who penned this piece at least had the courage to include to the treatment that a former Vice President of the United States received in comparison to an avowed Socialist domestic terrorist received.

You know if this sort of thing keeps up Americans might just begin to realize that the voices on the right are the ones which are tempered and even-handed and that they have more to fear from the left who revel in their ability to shut down free speech and engage in strong-arm tactics to silence their critics.

Also, contrary to the author's assertion that none of the attacks were fatal, unless you're a member of the Weather Underground, there were a couple of attacks linked to them that did result in the death of some police officers.

BTW, the picture used in this post is that of the cover of a book that Ayers wrote, which outlined how the Weather Underground was going to ignite a grassroots effort to overthrow the government that includes a foreword in which he describes Barack Obama as a family friend.

Ayers: Obama Election 'A Strike Against White Supremacy'

It's not quite clear what Barack Obama's terrorist pal has against Robert Byrd, but one thing is certain: The New York Times can't get enough of this crackpot.

First there was his impeccably timed September 11, 2001 column where he said he didn't regret being a terrorist. Then the Times so graciously gave him op-ed space again this past December where he played the victim for being called a terrorist.

Now he'll be getting the full NY Times Magazine treatment this Sunday.

Who said crime doesn't pay?

Sarah Palin once accused Barack Obama of “palling around with terrorists,” a catchphrase intended to highlight Obama’s connection to former Weather Underground member Bill Ayers.

Now that the campaign rhetoric has subsided, Ayers has an idea for a new show starring his Alaskan nemesis.

“I did send her a note after the election,” he says of Palin in the upcoming issue of the New York Times magazine. “I suggested that we have a talk show together called ‘Pallin’ Around With Sarah and Bill.’ I haven’t heard back.”

Ayers assiduously avoided interviews and press attention during the presidential race, but he insists the Obama campaign never told him to keep quiet.

“They apparently didn’t want to call me, and I certainly wouldn’t have initiated it,” he says.

According to Ayers, Obama’s election was “a strike against white supremacy.” But, he says, his victory doesn’t change the fact that “40 percent of black kids under 5 live in poverty.”

I guess that trillion-dollar war on poverty didn't quite work out.

Unrepentant Ayers: 'Hey, We Only Blew Up Small Bombs, So Everything's Cool, Right?'

Unrepentant terrorist and full time scumbag William Ayers returns to grace the pages of the New York Times, home of his notorious September 11, 2001 column.

This guy just doesn't get it, never will, and lies through his teeth.

Unable to challenge the content of Barack Obama’s campaign, his opponents invented a narrative about a young politician who emerged from nowhere, a man of charm, intelligence and skill, but with an exotic background and a strange name. The refrain was a question: “What do we really know about this man?”

Secondary characters in the narrative included an African-American preacher with a fiery style, a Palestinian scholar and an “unrepentant domestic terrorist.”

Conveniently omitted from this narrative is "convicted shady financier" Tony Rezko.

I never killed or injured anyone. I did join the civil rights movement in the mid-1960s, and later resisted the draft and was arrested in nonviolent demonstrations. I became a full-time antiwar organizer for Students for a Democratic Society. In 1970, I co-founded the Weather Underground, an organization that was created after an accidental explosion that claimed the lives of three of our comrades in Greenwich Village. The Weather Underground went on to take responsibility for placing several small bombs in empty offices — the ones at the Pentagon and the United States Capitol were the most notorious — as an illegal and unpopular war consumed the nation.

An accidental explosion? What, was it like a gas main happened to go off and these nonviolent comrades just happened to be in the neighborhood? No, the dumb shits detonated prematurely.

We did carry out symbolic acts of extreme vandalism directed at monuments to war and racism, and the attacks on property, never on people, were meant to respect human life and convey outrage and determination to end the Vietnam war.

Bombimgs are now translated as symbolic acts of extreme vandalism.

Ayers goes on to babble about diversity and hardly knowing Barack Obama, as if there's anyone alive who believes that nonsense. But this line about the Weather Underground being some harmless group of protesters just cannot stand. How does Ayers explain his comrades murdering two Nyack, NY police officers years after the illegal and unjust war ended?

Boudin is the son of Kathy Boudin and David Gilbert, members of the militant Weathermen. They're the 1960s group of rich-kid radicals who bombed government buildings and corporate headquarters, aided convicted felons in jail breaks, and participated in a 1981 Brinks' armored car holdup in Nyack, N.Y., that took the lives of three innocent Americans in the name of "peace." Boudin's mother and father were convicted for their participation in the Nyack murders and armed robbery, and remain remorselessly in prison today.

Two of the holdup victims gunned down in the botched Brinks' robbery were police officers. One was a private security guard. All three were veterans from working-class backgrounds. Neither the Times nor any other media outlet that has breathlessly reported on Boudin's Rhodes scholarship win has even seen fit to print the names of the Nyack victims: Waverly Brown, Edward O'Grady, and Peter Paige.

That name Chesa Boudin should sound familiar.

Chesa Boudin's indifference to the victims of his parents' ideological jihad was reinforced by his adoptive parents--unrepentant Weathermen colleagues Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn. Ayers celebrated bombing the Pentagon in his recent radical memoir, "Fugitive Days," and now teaches at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Dohrn declared war on "Amerikka," helped stage the "Days of Rage" in Chicago, when Weathermen blew up a memorial statue to police officers and rioted violently, leaving 75 policemen wounded and one permanently injured in a wheelchair, and then spent years as a fugitive from justice before settling into a comfy post as director of the Legal Clinic's Children and Family Justice Center at Northwestern University.

From both his biological and adoptive parents, Chesa Boudin has learned to stew in the indignant self-pity of Marxist leftovers. "When I was younger, I was angry," the 22-year-old told his sympathetic Times interviewer. "Now I'm not angry. I'm sad that my parents have to suffer what they have to suffer on a daily basis, that millions of other people have to suffer as well."

Neither Boudin or Ayers are angry any longer. They're just peaceful activists with a lot of blood on their hands and welcoming arms at the New York Times.

Ayers Yuks It Up With Obama Supporters in NYC

Naturally, the unrepentant terrorist spent part of his time whining about the evil Fox News at this closed-door gathering of Barack Obama supporters in Manhattan.

The man the GOP loves to hate tiptoed out of hiding Sunday - if only to blast Fox News and the rest of the media for his predicament.

William Ayers, the '60s radical who is one of John McCain's talking points in his criticism of Barack Obama, told a Manhattan panel discussion audience he was tired of being used as cannon fodder in America's political wars.

Aww, the poor guy. Well, Professor, maybe this is the price you pay for trying to murder people and never saying you're sorry.

"[Fox host] Bill O'Reilly comes on his show and first thing he says is, 'Why won't this Ayers story die?'" Ayers told well-wishers. "And then he spends 10 minutes talking about it."

Ayers, a University of Illinois education professor in Chicago, has mostly kept a low profile since McCain started using him as a poster boy for Obama's supposed left-wing leanings.

Supposed left-wing leanings? Supposed???

Good grief, we're losing the language.

The former member of the Weather Underground beamed at the attention paid by the audience of about 60 people, many of whom were decked out in Obama gear.

The crowd gave Ayers a warm welcome, guffawed at jokes about "redistributing the wealth" and nodded at his complaints about the "Republican revolution."

After the talk was over, event organizers attempted to sneak Ayers out a back door to avoid the media.

If they're so happy to have this lowlife, why do they have to sneak him out the back door?

University of Nebraska Claims a Blogger Threatened William Ayers

We noted last week the University of Nebraska had come to their senses and canceled an appearance by Barack Obama's terrorist pal William Ayers, and now they're claiming Ayers was threatened by an unidentified blogger.

A threat assessment expert says some people furious over the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's invitation to former radical William Ayers threatened protests and made veiled threats to kill him.

Professor Mario Scalora says in a memo released by the university Wednesday that there would be "hell to pay" if Ayers' scheduled appearance on Nov. 15 wasn't canceled.

One blogger said: "I wonder what kind of flag (Ayers) wants on his coffin."

Ayers helped found the Vietnam-era radical group the Weathermen, and he's now an education professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Ayers' ties to Barack Obama have been featured in Republican attacks.

Nowhere can I find this mystery blogger identified. This AP story is being disseminated around the globe and they fail to note who allegedly made this threat. Wouldn't that be of some relevance to the story?

If anyone can find a link to this "blogger" please let me know. A search for variations on that quote turn up nothing but that AP item. For all we know it was a comment left on a blog somewhere.

Chicago School Chief on Annenberg: 'There Was a Total Lack of Accountability'

Raise you hand if you're surprised the Barack Obama-William Ayers multimillion dollar Annenberg Challenge was a bust? Let's hope by failing miserably it means the kids weren't successfully indoctrinated into America-hating Marxist bilge.

Chicago's former schools chief has flunked the education foundation headed by Barack Obama and founded by 1960s terrorist Bill Ayers - saying it failed to monitor projects and funded school "reform" groups that campaigned against boosting academic standards.

"There was a total lack of accountability. If you went back and asked, you'd be hard-pressed to find out how the money was spent," said Paul Vallas, the city's school superintendent when Obama chaired the Chicago Annenberg Foundation from 1995 to 1999.

Annenberg spent $49.5 million, mostly on grants to 211 public schools that partnered with community-based groups. But despite collecting millions, those schools performed no better than other public schools, a study found.

Ayers, a professor of education at the University of Illinois and an ex-Weather Underground bomber, wrote the grant that won the Windy City funding from the national Annenberg Challenge. He was a key adviser to the Chicago Annenberg board.

While much debate has centered on Obama's relationship with Ayers, there's been virtually no discussion about how the Annenberg schools performed.

"Very little of the money found its way directly into the classroom," Vallas said.

Hmm. So where did the money go? To community organizers?

Ironically, Colin Powell stressed education when he endorsed The Messiah.

POWELL: I think the American people and the gentlemen running for president will have to, early on, focus on education more than we have seen in the campaign so far.

America has a terrible educational problem in the sense that we have too many youngsters not finishing school. A third of our kids don’t finish high school, 50 percent of minorities don’t finish high school. We’ve got to work on this, and my, my wife and I are leading a campaign with this purpose.

Let's hope he has better results than Obama and his terrorist pal. Meanwhile, Obama has continuously lied about how close he was with Ayers. More on that here.

University of Nebraska Disinvites Obama's Terrorist Friend

Poor Bill Ayers. The America-hating radical just can't get a fair shake in this mean country. I guess getting to play with millions of dollars and radicalizing Chicago's schools will have to suffice for the unrepentant terrorist and good pal of future President of Earth Barack Obama.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln rescinded its speaking invitation tonight for 1960s radical-turned-educator William Ayers.

University officials cited "safety reasons" for canceling Ayers' Nov. 15 appearance.

Spokeswoman Kelly Bartling declined to elaborate on what safety concerns would keep Ayers from addressing a College of Education and Human Sciences event.

Earlier today, Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman strongly condemned the invitation and called on the NU Board of Regents and President J.B. Milliken to block it.

Heineman said through a spokeswoman this evening that he was pleased the university had reconsidered and rescinded the invitation.

An Omaha charitable foundation had announced it was pulling all of its contributions to the university. Several other donors also have indicated to university fundraisers that there could be a financial cost if Ayers speaks.

And Nebraskans by the hundreds continued to register their opposition with university administrators and others, lighting up phone lines and filling e-mail boxes.

Heineman said Ayers' invitation was "an embarrassment" to the state and that it goes beyond the bounds of the university's mission.

"Our citizens are clearly outraged and want action," Heineman said in an interview. "This is their university. This isn't even a close call. The university should immediately rescind the invitation."

Dean Marjorie Kostelnik said she spoke Thursday night with UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman about "the climate around this issue."

Saftey reasons? How about putting the Cornhuskers offensive line in fron of the stage? Oh wait, then Ayers would be a sitting duck.

Seriously, though, citing safety concerns is pretty weak. Just admit you folks thought it would be cool to have this nutcase speak there since probably a good portion of the faculty is kindred spirits with the guy. You just figured nobody would object.

But guess what. Normal people do not like this lowlife Ayers and it's a slap in the face to decent, law-abiding citizens to give this guy a stage, not to mention it's disrespectful to the victims of his terror to whom he's never apologized.

Naturally, some academic pinheads see otherwise.

Scholars said a decision to pull an invitation to Ayers could be seen by educators nationally as a school-sponsored curb on academic freedom.

Please. All those "educators" will do is roll out the red carpert for Ayers nationwide, from Harvard to Madison to Berkeley. Mark it down.

Ayers went on to gain respect in the education field and become a scholar known for his ideas on school reform. At UNL, the plan was for him to limit his speech to graduate education students to that topic.

William Ayers, Model Citizen Who Just Happens to Like Cop Killers

Looks like unrepentant terrorist William Ayers also has pals at the Wall Street Journal.

I can just see the reaction from the left: "See, see! Someone working for Rupert Murdoch is friends with Ayers, so why is everyone giving him grief?"

This year the Democrats chose Barack Obama as their leader, a man who was born in 1961 and who largely missed our cultural civil war. In response, Republican campaign masterminds have sought to plunge him back into it in the most desperate and grotesque manner yet.

For days on end, the Republican presidential campaign has put nearly all of its remaining political capital on emphasizing Mr. Obama's time on various foundation boards with Bill Ayers, a former member of the Weathermen, which planted bombs and issued preposterous statements in the Vietnam era. Some on the right seem to believe Mr. Ayers is Mr. Obama's puppet-master, while others are content merely to insist that the association proves Mr. Obama to be soft on terrorism. Maybe he's soft on anarchy and repudiation, too.

I can personally attest to the idiocy of it all because I am a friend of Mr. Ayers. In fact, I met him in the same way Mr. Obama says he did: 10 years ago, Mr. Ayers was a guy in my neighborhood in Chicago who knew something about fundraising. I knew nothing about it, I needed to learn, and a friend referred me to Bill.

Bill's got lots of friends, and that's because he is today a dedicated servant of those less fortunate than himself; because he is unfailingly generous to people who ask for his help; and because he is kind and affable and even humble. Moral qualities which, by the way, were celebrated boisterously on day one of the GOP convention in September.

A dedicated servant of the little people, who just happens to dig a cop-killer.

Ayers' office door is decorated with pictures of Mumia Abu-Jamal, Che Guevara and Malcolm X. It is also home to pictures of children, bills of rights for students and parents, and a rainbow-hued greeting card advising "How to Be Really Alive." A place of prominence is give to a New Yorker cartoon of a man interviewing for a job. The interviewer says, "I'm trying to find a way to balance your strengths against your felonies."

The way these people talk about Ayers you'd think he's the Mr. Rogers of Hyde Park.

Lame Obama Radio Ad Distorts Relation to Ayers

Weak, and with the same spin we noticed last week, no less.

"Bill Ayers is a professor of education who once served with Obama on a school reform board, a board funded by conservative Republicans tied to McCain," says the ad's narrator. "When Ayers committed crimes in the '60s, Obama was 8 years old. Obama condemned those despicable acts. Ayers has had no role in Obama's campaign, and will have no role in his administration."

Ayers also committed crimes in the 1970s, as did his wife, but why quibble with the facts when we can remind everyone Obama was 8 years old back then?

As for the board being funded by those with ties to McCain, while technically true, it's so pathetically misleading, as we noted here.

RoP Across The Pond: Terrorist Says He Was 'Simply Taking Part In A Protest'

Terror trial: NHS doctors planned terrorist 'spectacular'

Two NHS doctors planned a campaign of "indiscriminate and wholesale murder" with a series of car bomb attacks across Britain which culminated in a failed suicide attack on Glasgow Airport, a jury has been told.

Islamic extremists Bilal Abdulla, 29, and Mohammed Asha, 27, plotted the "spectaculars" as "punishment" for Britain's foreign policy in Iraq and Israel, it is alleged.

Iraqi national Abdulla and a third man, Kafeel Ahmed, tried and failed to blow up cars packed with gas canisters, nails and petrol outside a nightclub in London's West End in June 2007.

When those devices failed to detonate, Abdulla and Ahmed launched the alleged suicide attack on Glasgow Airport the following day. Ahmed, 28, later died from burns he sustained after setting off petrol bombs which failed to blow up their Jeep.

Saudi-born Asha, a senior house officer in the neurology department of University Hospital of North Staffordshire, was not directly involved in either attack but supplied money to buy the cars and bomb components, was in touch with the other two men at crucial stages of the plot and may have offered "spiritual and ideological guidance", the prosecution allege.

Three other cars had been purchased by the gang and other possible targets including the Old Bailey and the City of London had been filmed by the plotters, Woolwich Crown Court in south east London was told.

Jonathan Laidlaw QC, prosecuting, said: "In addition to the killing of the innocent the objective was to seize public attention, both here and internationally. By the carrying out of a series of explosions, with no warning as to where the next strike would occur, the terrorists knew the public would be gripped by fear."

He added that the attacks failed through sheer "good fortune" on the part of the public.

"Apart from the shocking nature of the activity these two defendants were engaged in, the extraordinary thing is that both men are doctors," said Mr Laidlaw. "They turned their attention away from the treating of illness to the planning of murder."

Mr Laidlaw said the plot had not been picked up by the security services, but "who would have suspected two doctors to have been involved in such planning?"

Both men deny conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause explosions.

The jury was told that the plot, which had taken six months to plan, was put into action when Ahmed and Abdulla drove two Mercedes cars packed with gas canisters and nails from their rented house in Glasgow to London, where they parked outside the Tiger Tiger nightclub in the Haymarket, which was packed with more than 500 people.

The second of the cars, a blue, L-registered Mercedes, was parked near a bus stop in Cockspur Street, just south of the night club, possibly as a secondary device "deliberately placed there so it would be in the path of those evacuated."

The two men, who had stopped at London's Gateway services to fill the cars with "as much fuel as possible" on the way, opened the valves on the gas cylinders and retreated to "a safe distance".

At around 1.30am on June 29, 2007, the two men allegedly tried to detonate the car bombs by calling mobile phones inside the cars which had been rigged up to home-made detonators.

"Had it been executed in the way intended [it] would have resulted in the loss of many lives particularly among the young seeking entertainment in the area or on their way home after a night out," the prosecutor said.

But a miscalculation meant the car bombs failed to detonate, and the two men decided on a drastic change of plan.

Because the cars had not been destroyed, the men knew that the police would quickly piece together their identities from the car registrations, the mobile phones and CCTV images, said Mr Laidlaw.

"The change in approach was that the next attack was to be a suicide attack," said Mr Laidlaw. "The bombers, even though the attack was likely to result in their own deaths, were absolutely determined that the next vehicle would explode. There was to be no repeat of the failure of the devices in London."

The next day, on Saturday June 30, the busiest day of the year at Glasgow airport, a Jeep packed with gas canisters was driven into the main doors of the terminal building with Ahmed at the wheel and Abdulla in the passenger seat. The men threw down petrol bombs in an effort to ensure the vehicle exploded.

"Again fortune intervened to save those inside the terminal," Mr Laidlaw said. "The Jeep became trapped in the terminal doors and despite the best efforts of the bombers and although there was a fierce fire, the jeep did not explode."

The jury was told that the men had first met in 2004 and 2005, whilst staying at an Islamic centre in Cambridge, where Asha was working at Addenbrooke's Hospital.

At some point the men, who all adhered to "extreme Islamic beliefs", decided to launch "revengeful" attacks on Britain, said Mr Laidlaw, because of what they saw as the country's "persecution" of Muslims in the Middle East.

They spent six months planning the attacks, it is alleged, with e-mails between Ahmed and Abdulla talking about "experiments" in February 2007.

In April Abdulla rented a house in a quiet residential street near Paisley, Renfrewshire, 14 miles from Glasgow, where they could prepare and arm the vehicles, the court was told.

Ahmed flew back to Britain in May after eight months in India, and within days he and Abdulla, a junior house officer in general surgery at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, had carried out reconnaissance in London, Mr Laidlaw said.

Among the areas they visited were Aldgate in the City, Leicester Square, Charing Cross, Ludgate Hill, near the Old Bailey, and Upper St Martin's Lane, near the Haymarket.

They were in frequent contact with Asha during the visit to London, Mr Laidlaw said.

"It is as if Abdulla was reporting back, taking instructions from or seeking the approval of (Asha)," said Mr Laidlaw.

Having bought three Mercedes cars, a BMW 525 and a Jeep through Autotrader magazine, the men bought gas canisters and large quantities of nails from B&Q and petrol cans from Halfords and duvets and pillows from Tesco and Asda to cover up the gas cylinders.

Abdulla claims he never intended to kill or injure anyone, but was simply taking part in a protest, a defence dismissed as "ludicrous" by the prosecution.

The trial continues.

Obama's New Ayers Strategy: Mention Ronald Reagan and Hope This Goes Away

Really lame. I heard this one floating around yesterday, that since Walter Annenberg was a friend of both Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, that somehow makes it OK that a scumbag like William Ayers used his philanthropy money in concert with Barack Obama to indoctrinate Chicago schoolchildren.

Well, here we go, with Obama invoking Reagan's name in the discussion. This guy has no shame.

"The gentleman in question, Bill Ayers, is a college professor, teaches education at the University of Illinois," he said. "That's how i met him -- working on a school reform project that was funded by an ambassador and very close friend of Ronald Reagan's" along with "a bunch of conservative businessmen and civic leaders."

"Ultimately, I ended up learning about the fact that he had engaged in this reprehensible act 40 years ago, but I was eight years old at the time and I assumed that he had been rehabilitated," Obama said.

Ooo-fa, that bullshit about being eight years old again, like that makes it alright. Yeah, well Nixon was president while William Ayers was committing terrorists acts and Ronald Reagan was president when Ayers' friends murdered two police officers back in 1981. Somehow I doubt either of them approved of Ayers.

But really, Barack, was that when you first met him? I'm beginning the believe it was well before then.

'Ayers': New McCain Ad Unloads on Obama

Keep them coming. The public needs to know why Barack Obama is friends with terrorists. Of course, I'm sure he'll whine about being smeared.

Speaking of William Ayers, it's becoming more evident Obama knew him long before he was allegedly introduced to him in 1995.

'Overcrowded, Under-funded, Over-centralized and Racist'

It looks like terrorist William Ayers helped teach the Obamas to play the race card going back many years.

When Barack and Michelle Obama appeared on stage with the terrorist Ayers, Barack sure wasn't eight years old. This also makes it appear the Obamas and Ayers were more than just passing acquaintances.

William Ayers, author of A Kind and Just Parent: The Children of Juvenile Court (Beacon Press, 1997), says "We should call a child a child. A 13-year-old who picks up a gun isn't suddenly an adult. We have to ask other questions: How did he get the gun? Where did it come from?"

Ayers, who spent a year observing the Cook County Temporary Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago, is one of four panelists who will speak on juvenile justice at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, in the C-Shop. The panel, which marks the 100th anniversary of the juvenile justice system in the United States, is part of the Community Service Center's monthly discussion series on issues affecting the city of Chicago. The event is free and open to the public.

Ayers will be joined by Sen. Barack Obama, Senior Lecturer in the Law School, who is working to combat legislation that would put more juvenile offenders into the adult system; Randolph Stone, Director of the Mandel Legal Aid Clinic; Alex Correa, a reformed juvenile offender who spent seven years in Cook County Temporary Detention Center; Frank Tobin, a former priest and teacher at the Detention Center who helped Correa; and Willy Baldwin, who grew up in public housing and is currently a teacher at the Detention Center.

The juvenile justice system was founded by Chicago reformer Jane Addams, who advocated the establishment of a separate court system for children which would act like a "kind and just parent" for children in crisis.

One hundred years later, the system is "overcrowded, under-funded, over-centralized and racist," Ayers said.

Michelle Obama, Associate Dean of Student Services and Director of the University Community Service Center, hopes bringing issues like this to campus will open a dialogue between members of the University community and the broader community.

Obama Whines About Being Linked With His Friend the Terrorist

Everything's a smear with this guy. And if it's not a smear, then he and his people smear you by calling you racist. Well, until he comes clean on his close relationship with William Ayers, he's never going to hear the end of it.

Democrat Barack Obama counterattacked on Sunday against a new Republican tactic by saying rival John McCain was more interested in a smear campaign than fixing the U.S. economy.

With McCain losing ground in opinion polls, a campaign strategist was quoted as saying the Republican presidential candidate needed to "turn the page" on the economic issue and make the election about Obama's experience and character.

That effort started on Saturday when Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin accused Obama of "palling around with terrorists" in reference to his acquaintance with Bill Ayers, a former member of the Vietnam War-era militant Weather Underground.

Nice to see Reuters so objectively refer to his friend now as an acquaintance, like Ayers is just some guy he waves hello to while innocuously passing him on the street.

"Senator McCain and his operatives are gambling that he can distract you with smears rather than talk to you about substance," Obama said. "They'd rather try to tear our campaign down than lift this country up."

Lifting us all up, which is what he was sent here to do, no doubt.

But McCain's supporters and his campaign did not back down. They pushed the issue of Obama's character on the Sunday television talk shows and defended linking Obama with Ayers.

"The last four weeks of this election will be about whether the American people are willing to turn our economy and national security over to Barack Obama, a man with little record, questionable judgment, and ties to radical figures like unrepentant domestic terrorist William Ayers," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said.

Ayers was one of the leaders of the Weather Underground when it was involved in a series of bombings in the 1960s, when Obama was 8 years old. Obama met him in the 1990s when first starting his political career in Chicago and the two served on a board together.

Obama has said he knows Ayers, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, only slightly and has denounced his actions with the Weather Underground.

In the 1960s, when Obama was 8 years old. Hmm, that has a familiar ring to it.

Mr. Obama has called Mr. Ayers “’somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8 years old.”

But I guess with the Reuters reporter, Obama was 8 years old during the entire 1960s. And what's this jive about knowing Ayers only slightly? Ahem.

Still, while Obama can play cute and say he's denounced Ayers' actions, there's no record of him ever denouncing Ayers himself, but will go to great lengths to denounce and smear anyone who questions his friendship with Ayers.

Kurtz, unlike Ayers, is denounced in the most vicious and uncivil terms (there is a lot more than I quoted). If Obama or his campaign had ever denounced Ayers with the fervor that his campaign has now used in denouncing Kurtz, Obama wouldn’t be having trouble on his connection to Ayers. And I’m not suggesting that Obama should have denounced Ayers. I am just noting the grossly disproportionate responses of the Obama campaign to their differing offenses and the Obama campaign’s direct attack on Kurtz’s character, not just what he's done or said – including very explicitly using arguments of guilt by association against Kurtz (which of course are being used against Obama, despite the protestations to the contrary of his critics).

Update: Hmm. Just a casual acquaintance, huh?

So William Ayers Is Now a 'Former Radical'?

I must have missed the announcement when he renounced his past actions and decried terrorism.

Why else would he be called a former radical?

It appears the McCain campaign is finally preparing to launch a forceful assault on Obama's character by portraying him as having a cozy relationship with a man it calls an "unrepentant terrorist," even though there is scant evidence that the two men were much more than acquaintances who happened to serve together on two not-for-profit boards several years ago.

But with McCain now trailing Obama in a number of key battleground states and time running short, it appears his campaign is finally preparing to play the Ayers card — whatever it is.
