Confirmed: Post-Workout Beer Is Healthier Than Water

Actual scientific conclusion!

You still might want to brown-bag it at the gym until this becomes common knowledge.
KANSAS CITY, Missouri - Forget water or Gatorade. The drink of choice to rehydrate after a workout is beer.

Researchers at Granada University in Spain found beer can help retain liquid better than water alone.

The results were published in the British newspaper The Telegraph.

The study involved a group of students. They were asked to work out until their body temperature reached 104 degrees.

Researchers then gave beer to half of the students and water to the other half.

They said the bubbles in the beer help quench thirst while the carbohydrates help make up for burned calories.

A cardiologist with the Real Madrid football team told the paper he has long recommended beer to professional sportsmen after exhausting activities.
Not mentioned in the article is the remarkable discovery that the alcohol component of the brew helps numb joint and muscle pain caused by working out in the first place.

Who'da thunk it?

'There Is No Genuine Connection Between Beer and Naked Women'

Oh, really? They've obviously not followed my exploits over the past couple decades. I might add that plying the womenfolk with some wine or margaritas definitely accelerates the process.
Feminists are calling for an ad featuring topless women clutching glasses of ale to be banned.

The beers match the hair colours of a curvy blonde, redhead and brunette, reports CEN.

Now feminist leaders are demanding that advertising authorities should ban the ads due to sexism.

One unnamed campaigner said: "There is no genuine connection between beer and naked women.

"The women have just been put there to sexualise beer. The advert is sexist against women."
Sure looks to me like those ladies are enjoying a cold one.

World Cup Prompts Beer War

It appears that we have our first good controversy to come out of the World Cup, I don't count that kazoo thing, although it is annoying as hell.
Fifa is considering legal action against a Dutch brewery it accuses of using women fans to advertise its beer at the World Cup.

Stewards ejected 36 Dutch supporters from Monday's match between the Netherlands and Denmark midway through the second half in Johannesburg.

All were dressed identically in tightly hugging short orange dresses, sold as part of a gift pack by a Dutch brewery.

Budweiser, a Belgium owned brewery in case you had forgotten, is the official beer sponsor of the World Cup. FIFA is the governing organization which oversees international soccer.

I seem to recall during the winter Olympics at a lot of the skating events there was a sea of orange also to root on the Dutch teams.

Heavy-Drinking Obama Owes Canadian PM a Case of Beer

Considering doctors told Barack Obama to cut back on his excessive drinking, losing a case a beer is sure to cause him some hardship for a day or two.
A loss for the U.S. hockey team has President Barack Obama owing his Canadian counterpart a cold one.

The president made a friendly wager with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper before the U.S. and Canada gold medal game in Vancouver on Sunday.

The U.S. lost to Canada 3-2 in overtime.

Obama wagered a case of Yuengling, a Pennsylvania regional beer, while prime minister Harper chose to wager twenty-four bottles of Molson
I'm not the only one wondering excatly how much Obama's drinking (H/T, with comment of the day).
Blame Busch.

Ironically, the Yuengling Obama would have received is made with non-union labor. I wonder how his labor thugs would have felt about that?

Good News: Beer May Prevent Prostate Cancer

Best news I've seen in some time. Let's just hope this science is settled.

Drink up, guys.
TESTS have revealed that men who drink beer may reduce their chances of developing prostate cancer, say scientists.

Experiments have shown that xanthohumol, a compound derived from the hops in beer, blocks a chemical reaction that can lead to the development of cancer.

The disease is usually treated with drugs that act in a similar way.

Study leader Dr Clarissa Gerhausa, from the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, said: "We hope that one day we can demonstrate that xanthohumol prevents prostate cancer development, first in animal models and then in humans, but we are just at the beginning."

Xanthohumol is a powerful antioxidant, known to have anti-cancer properties. It is also found in fruits and spices.

It was previously suggested that the compound could reduce the chances of females getting breast cancer.
Next time Mrs. JWF nags me about drinking beer I can simply point to this study as I order her to get me another one (just kidding, ladies).

No Beer To Cry In

More evidence that the more you tax something the less people will buy it. To liberals this is completely acceptable since they presume to be the judge and jury on what products or services should be available to you, for your own good doncha know.

In England they recently raised the taxes on beer with the expected results.

UK pubs closed at a rate of 52 per week in the first half of the year - a third more than the same period in 2008 - the British Beer & Pub Association said.

The Democrats in this country are of course pursuing the same logic in regards to driving entire sectors of our energy producers out of business by their cap and tax legislation and their proposals to tax everything in their health care package. Remember back when there was a furor over the expansion of the SCHIP, that was to be paid with increasing taxes on tobacco?

It seems liberals like to point to Europe as some of utopia that we ought to emulate here while ignoring the hard data that comes from the imposition of such programs. In another example England is also reporting a rise in deaths from knives, even though they have outlawed guns almost completely and have instituted some draconian measures in regards to possession of knives. Guess where the biggest increase is occurring?

That's right, in those areas where they are imposing the tightest enforcement.

Maybe there is a connection between the two, closing of pubs and more knife violence I mean.

Great News: Beer Tax Floated To Pay For Obama's Healthcare Scam

First they came for the beer drinkers...
Joe Six-Pack may have to hand over nearly $2 more for a case of beer to help provide health insurance for all.

Details of the proposed beer tax are described in a Senate Finance Committee document distributed to lawmakers before a closed-door meeting Wednesday. Senators are focusing on how to pay for expanding health insurance for an estimated 50 million uninsured Americans, a cost that could range to some $1.5 trillion over 10 years.

You can't raise that from beer money alone.
Then they came for the wine drinkers...
Taxes on wine and hard liquor would also go up.
Then they came for the soda drinkers...
And there might be a new tax on soda and other sugary drinks blamed for contributing to obesity. A tax of 3 cents per 12-ounce drink would raise about $50 billion over 10 years, according to congressional estimates. Diet drinks, however, wouldn't be taxed.
Will there be a special tax on waffles, arugula and wagyu beef?

Naturally, this will just cost more jobs during the Obama Recession.
The soft drink industry and beer and wine producers are already lobbying to stop the proposals before they gain traction. The tax increases would lead to job losses for workers and higher costs for recession weary consumers, say the industries. Wine makers are also pointing to studies that suggest a glass a day can be good for health.

"Singling out wine for higher taxes to reform health care is misguided because wine is part of a healthy diet and lifestyle for millions of Americans," said Robert P. Koch, president of the Wine Institute, which represents California's industry.

Under the proposal lawmakers are considering, beer taxes would be increased by 48 cents a six-pack, from the current 33 cents. Beer is still the favorite choice of Americans who drink alcohol.

Gotta Love The Aussies

Leave it to our friends down under in Australia to come up with this idea. A beer bottle with scantily clad woman that gets even more scantily clad as you drink.
the Skinny Blonde bottle features a 1950s-style pin-up called Daisy whose red bikini disappears as the beer level drops and the bottle warms up, thanks to the modern ink technology used on the labels.
Of course if you drink too many of these healthy beers you might begin to see pink elephants.

When All Else Fails, Go After the Beer Drinkers

Grim news for Joe Six-pack in California. Of course, this won't accomplish a damn thing other than gouging consumers.
Joe Six-pack will have to pay a lot more to get his buzz on if Assemblyman Jim Beall has his way.

The San Jose Democrat on Thursday proposed raising the beer tax by $1.80 per six-pack, or 30 cents per can or bottle. The current tax is 2 cents per can. That's an increase of about 1,500 percent.

Beall said the tax would generate $2 billion a year to fund health care services, crime prevention and programs to prevent underage drinking and addiction.

"The people who use alcohol should pay for part of the cost to society, just like we've accepted that concept with tobacco," Beall said.

He added that the beer tax hasn't been touched since 1991, and the increase then was meager.

But the freshman lawmaker will have to lift the legislative equivalent of a full keg of beer over his head to get his tax enacted. That's because it would require a two-thirds vote in the Assembly and Senate - and then, because it's a constitutional amendment, it would have to be approved by voters. Republicans say it's a non-starter.

"I predict the shelf life will be very short," said Assemblyman Roger Niello, R-Sacramento, vice chairman of the budget committee. "It's a piecemeal approach to the budget that completely avoids any discussion of spending discipline, which is fundamentally why we have the problem that we have."
Naturally, it would be a job killer.
Dan Gordon, co-founder of Gordon Biersch Brewing Co., calculated that the tax on a barrel of beer would go from $6.40 to $89. "We would all be looking for jobs," he said.

Climate Change Calamity: Beer the Next Victim

This truly is grim news. I've been a skeptic for far too long, but this could have serious lifestyle implications.

BEER will be short supply, more expensive and may taste different as climate change affects barley production, a scientist says.

Drought conditions in parts of Australia where malting barley was grown was likely to get worse, according to Jim Salinger of New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research.

Barley production in the main growing region of Canterbury in New Zealand - where brewing giant Lion Nathan gets about 70 per cent of its malted barley - would also be affected, the New Zealand Press Association said.

"It will mean either there will be pubs without beer or the cost of beer will go up," he said.

Malting barley production in Australia was likely to be hit hard in parts of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and NSW.

The dry areas of Australia would become drier and water shortages would get worse.

"It will provide a lot of challenges for the brewing industry," Dr Salinger said.
On the upside, there's apparently no evidence this will affect North American brewing capacity.

Better then winning the lottery

Beer aficionado wins lifetime supply

"It's not about drinking high quantities of beer, it's about enjoying the diversities of beer," Venzke said.

Wynkoop said Venzke was chosen for his "humor" as well as "a combination of impressive beer drinking experiences ... and beer ambassadorship."

Ahhhh the diversity of beer.

Couch Potatoes Rejoice

You get the feeling his parents must wonder why they spent so much money on a Duke education.

Refrigerator will toss you can of beer
When John Cornwell graduated from Duke University last year, he landed a job as software engineer in Atlanta but soon found himself longing for his college lifestyle. So the engineering graduate built himself a reminder of life on campus: a refrigerator that can toss a can of beer to his couch with the click of a remote control.

"I conceived it right after I got out," said Cornwell, a May 2006 graduate from Huntington, N.Y. "I missed the college scene. It embodies the college spirit that I didn't want to let go of."

It took the 22-year-old Cornwell about 150 hours and $400 in parts to modify a mini-fridge common to many college dorm rooms into the beer-tossing contraption, which can launch 10 cans of beer from its magazine before needing a reload.
