UN calls for pedal power to reduce environmental damage

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - More bicycle riding and other lifestyle changes are urgently needed to reduce climate-altering carbon emissions that are damaging Asia's health and could also threaten the economy, the World Health Organisation said Monday.

Climate change contributes directly or indirectly to about 77,000 deaths per year in the region, according to WHO estimates.

Some evidence of this claim would be nice. Oh, there isn't any?

"So far the impact is on the health of the people. If the trend continues, it may have an impact on the economy," said Shigeru Omi, WHO's regional director for the Western Pacific.

"Of course the threat is there. We should not wait for that to happen," he told reporters at the start of a four-day conference on the impact of climate change and health in Southeast and East Asian countries.

Omi said urgent action was needed because Asia's share of the world's greenhouse gas emissions was expected to grow larger with the rapid economic expansion of China and India.

"We have now reached a critical stage at which global warming already has seriously impacted lives and health and this problem will pose an even greater threat to mankind in coming decades if we fail to act now," Omi said.

He said that in some countries environmental issues were not given the highest priority but "if we ignore the environment, humanity will suffer."

Global warming will redraw the maps of the world. The U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicts that sea levels will rise 7 to 23 inches by the end of the century; as the water gets higher, the sandy beaches that make California a tourist magnet will be washed away. Beachfront real estate will end up underwater, cliffs will erode faster, sea walls will buckle and inlets will become bays. The water supply will be threatened as mountain snowfall turns to rain and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta faces contamination with saltwater. Droughts will likely become more common, as will the wildfires they breed.

So in light of the hyperventilating over events they can't possible predict with any certainty, what do these geniuses suggest?

More taxes, of course.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) warns governments have until 2012 to "plant the seeds of change" and make positive moves to limit carbon emissions.

If they fail to do so, the WWF's Vision For 2050 warns "generations to come will have to live with the compromises and hardships caused by their inability to act".

These hysterics are really getting boring.

Billions of people face shortages of food and water and increased risk of flooding, experts at a major climate change conference have warned.

The bleak conclusion came ahead of the publication of a key report by hundreds of international environmental experts.

Agreement on the final wording of the report was reached after a marathon debate through the night in Brussels.

People living in poverty would be worst affected by the effects of climate change, the gathered experts said.

"It's the poorest of the poor in the world, and this includes poor people even in prosperous societies, who are going to be the worst hit," said Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

It all boils down to wanting more of our money.

"The challenge is now to support those people living in the most vulnerable areas so that they are able to adapt and improve their ways of life."

Here's an idea. Start with the $64 billion looted by the UN in the Oil-for Food scam. Then maybe we can talk.

Goracle's Global Goofiness

Let's hope a lot more guys like Bob Murray step forward and tell it like it is.

William F. Buckley calls this nonsense an inquisition.

The whole business is eerily religious in feel. Back in the 15th century, the question was: Do you believe in Christ? It was required in Spain by the Inquisition that the answer should be affirmative, leaving to one side subsidiary specifications.

It is required today to believe that carbon-dioxide emissions threaten the basic ecological balance. The assumption then is that inasmuch as a large proportion of the damage is man-made, man-made solutions are necessary. But it is easy to see, right away, that there is a problem in devising appropriate solutions, and in allocating responsibility for them.

To speak in very general terms, the United States is easily the principal offender, given the size of our country and the intensity of our use of fossil-fuel energy. But even accepting the high per-capita rate of consumption in the United States, we face the terrible inadequacy of ameliorative resources. If the United States were (we are dealing in hypotheses) to eliminate the use of oil or gas for power, would that forfeiture be decisive?

Well, no. It would produce about 23 percent global relief, and at a devastating cost to our economy.

More gibberish, hysteria, and outright falsehoods from the New York Times.

Industrialized countries bound by the Kyoto Protocol, the climate pact rejected by the Bush administration, project that hundreds of millions of dollars will soon flow via that treaty into a climate adaptation fund.

Just a friendly reminder that Kyoto was rejected by the United States Senate 95-0 on July 25, 1997. George W. Bush was the Governor of Texas at the time.

According to Rasmussen, only 24% of Americans consider The Goracle an "expert" on global warming.

Former Vice President Al Gore (D) received a warm welcome on Capitol Hill last week for his testimony on the environment and Global Warming. However, while he is now an Academy Award winner and celebrity activist, just 24% of Americans consider Gore an expert on Global Warming. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of 1,000 adults found that 47% say he is not an expert on the topic (see crosstabs).

In fact, just 36% of Americans say that Gore knows what he is talking about when it comes to the environment and Global Warming. Thirty-one percent (31%) say he does not know what he is talking about while 33% are not sure. Women, by a 2-to-1 margin, say Gore knows what he is talking about. Men, by a similar margin, say he does not.

After all the hype, after all the lies, he's only got 24% believing him.

Just for comparison, consider after six years of relentlessly negative and downright hostile coverage, according to Rasmussen, President Bush is at 40%, which some might consider good considering how he's been portrayed.

Gore's Big Lies

It was painful watching The Goracle's theatrics and thankfully I watched only brief portions of his hysterics Wednesday. The part where he babbles about global warming being a moral issue and nearly crying was really ridiculous. Safe to say the Hollywood idiots won't be nominating him for Best Actor next year.

Iain Murray exposes this fraud today.

Al Gore was born and spent most of his life in Washington, D.C. Yesterday, he returned to the fever swamp to show he's forgotten none of his old political tricks.

Addressing the House and Senate on global warming, he put forth a litany of half-truths that he twisted into a morality tale. But the facts tell a different story. The former veep is a master politician, not a prophet or a planetary savior.

Gore's biggest rhetorical trick is saying that the Earth has a fever. He says that 10 of the hottest years in history came in the last 11 years, and this proves we must do something, because, "If your baby has a fever, you go to the doctor."

This is meaningless. The Earth has been much, much hotter in the past than today. No giant space nanny fed it medicine.

Moreover, a healthy baby has a constant temperature - that's why a fever is bad. The Earth does not have a constant temperature. It has been generally warming since the end of the Little Ice Age in the early 19th century, but that has not been uniform. It's had warming phases (the 1920s and 1930) and cooling phases (the 1940s to 1970s).

It's also had periods like today, when temperatures are flat - there hasn't been much warming since 1998. Yes, it's warmer today than it was a hundred years ago, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Talking about fevers is misleading, but it's a great rhetorical trick.

Environmental Wacko: Billions Will Die

Nothing like ratcheting up the hysteria a few notches.

In his book The Weather Makers, Tim Flannery puts aside his essential optimism for long enough to write: "If humans pursue a business-as-usual course for the first half of this century, I believe the collapse of civilisation due to climate change becomes inevitable."

Good grief. Now all you teachers out there, make sure you get the kiddies to read this so we can scare the daylights out of them.

Not everyone is convinced by the propaganda.

Some don't buy any of this "climate porn", as a UK think tank recently described such talk. Al Gore's movie is "bullshit from beginning to end", according to Ray Evans, a former Western Mining executive and author of the Lavoisier Group's Nine Facts About Climate Change (2006). For Evans and many others, man-made climate change panic is a bugaboo, perhaps even a hoax.

The Goracle Faces Further Scrutiny

Al Gore is facing mounting criticism, now with this piece from the New York Times, of all places. I think they're just covering their tracks, but at least some of his critics are getting noticed.

Hollywood has a thing for Al Gore and his three-alarm film on global warming, "An Inconvenient Truth," which won an Academy Award for best documentary. So do many environmentalists, who praise him as a visionary, and many scientists, who laud him for raising public awareness of climate change.

But part of his scientific audience is uneasy. In talks, articles and blog entries that have appeared since his film and accompanying book came out last year, these scientists argue that some of Mr. Gore's central points are exaggerated and erroneous. They are alarmed, some say, at what they call his alarmism.

"I don't want to pick on Al Gore," Don J. Easterbrook, an emeritus professor of geology at Western Washington University, told hundreds of experts at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America. "But there are a lot of inaccuracies in the statements we are seeing, and we have to temper that with real data."

Mr. Gore, in an e-mail exchange about the critics, said his work made "the most important and salient points" about climate change, if not "some nuances and distinctions" scientists might want. "The degree of scientific consensus on global warming has never been stronger," he said, adding, "I am trying to communicate the essence of it in the lay language that I understand."

Al Gore had his moment to shine at The Academy Awards last week and was given an Oscar for his fraudulent schlockumentary. That was the highlight of his week. The next day, he was exposed as a hypocrite and it's been all downhill since. Now a group out of the U.K. is set to present The Great Global Warming Swindle.

The film argues that the earth's climate is always changing, and that rapid warmings and coolings took place long before the burning of fossil fuels. It argues that the present single-minded focus on reducing carbon emissions not only may have little impact on climate change, it may also have the unintended consequence of stifling development in the third world, prolonging endemic poverty and disease.

The film features an impressive roll-call of experts, including nine professors – experts in climatology, oceanography, meteorology, environmental science, biogeography and paleoclimatology – from such reputable institutions as MIT, NASA, the International Arctic Research Centre, the Institut Pasteur, the Danish National Space Center and the Universities of London, Ottawa, Jerusalem, Winnipeg, Alabama and Virginia.

It should be curious to see how the divinity school dropout counteracts actual scientists, but I'm sure he'll find a bogeyman.

Meanwhile, the Riehl World View has the disturbing Gore Funding Plan For "A New World Order". If you think this global warming nonsense was the only thing on Gore's agenda, think again.

If your employer began paying you 80 cents on the dollar, but, not to worry, the other 20 cents was going to support "good causes", thereby giving you value instead of capital, would you be pleased?

If not, you won't like what Al Gore has been quietly planning along with his Global Warming initiative. He and others are working to achieve that very thing and to bring it about in a manner which doesn't give you a vote in which values your dollars end up supporting.

Gore is quietly funding an assault on Capitalism as we know it, one that begins but doesn't end with Global Warming. That's only the model for what's coming next.

Sans news conferences and Oscar nods, it's a well-funded, grand design to re-shape, not just America, but the global economy in such a manner so as to inculcate Liberal values into the world's system of finance.

Al Gore declared that "climate change" was "the most important moral, ethical, spiritual and political issue humankind has ever faced.'' Ever. I believe that was the same day it was revealed that George W. Bush's ranch in Texas is more environmentally friendly than the Gore mansion in Tennessee. According to the Nashville Electric Service, the Eco-Messiah's house uses 20 times more electricity than the average American home. The average household consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours. In 2006, the Gores wolfed down nearly 221,000 kilowatt-hours.

Naturally, you are required to read the whole thing.

Over at the American thinker, Jack Kemp (no, not that Jack Kemp) takes umbrage with how Eco-Nazis trivialize the Holocaust.

Al Gore lives the lifestyle of a movie star, with limos, private jets, a mansion, and 20 times the average electricity consumption of the ordinary American. It is beyond repugnant that such a man lecture us on the virtues of consuming less, no matter how rich he might get off the sale of carbon credit indulgences.

If Al invokes Kristallnact, it should be spelled "Cristal"nacht - as in the very expensive French champagne favored by movie stars, drug dealers, and Wall Street hotshots as they nightclub away at glamour spots in Hollywood. Or maybe "crystal," as in Baccarat crystal stemware.

Perhaps if the Gestapo had shined fluorescent bulbs while interrogating prisoners, they could have also participated in saving the earth.

Come to think of it, how many carbon credits did the Nazis earn by lowering the electricity usage of 6 million Jews, as well as by getting many of them to travel by freight train instead of private automobile to concentration camps? In Al Gore's Brave New World, removing human beings from the earth is real plus.

The media have recently been blaring what they depict (inaccurately, by the way) as the latest grim warning from the practically unanimous ranks of the world's climatologists concerning global warming. It is time to take two aspirin, lie down and consider the matter calmly.

Global warming concerns are keeping children awake at night

Half of young children are anxious about the effects of global warming, often losing sleep because of their concern, according to a new report today.

A survey of 1,150 youngsters aged between seven and 11 found that one in four blamed politicians for the problems of climate change.

Now what scientific group came up with this gem? Why, a supermarket chain, of course.

One in seven of those questioned by supermarket giant Somerfield said their own parents were not doing enough to improve the environment.

The most feared consequences of global warming included poor health, the possible submergence of entire countries and the welfare of animals.

Most of those polled understood the benefits of recycling, although one in 10 thought the issue was linked to riding a bike.

Pete Williams, of Somerfield, said: "Concerns over our environment dominate the media at present and kids are exposed to the hard facts as much as anybody.

Here's a radical concept which may enable the little urchins to sleep better at night. Try educating them, not indoctrinating them with pseudo-science and propaganda. If all a kid hears 24/7 is some hype how they'll be living underwater in 20 years, they might start believing the nonsense.

Let them be children.

As we head into our third week of freezing temperatures here in the Northeast, with some parts of upstate New York buried under eight feet of snow, the global warming/climate change hysteria continues unabated, as the idiotic Al Gore wanders the planet searching for another braindead audience to bore to death with his silly slideshows. Thankfully, we have some lucid thinkers on the right side who are not playing along.

In the end, I believe the American people will choose not to destroy our economy just to go along with junk science that has no foundation in reality.

Sophisticated people in Western societies don't stand in public and shout, "The end is near!" the way a nutty preacher does. They don't cut their scalps the way Shia Muslims do in a rite of self-flagellation to mark the Day of Ashura. They do none of these things, because they have the issue of global warming instead.

Given the option of getting another 1,800 percent richer in exchange for another 0.7 degrees warmer, I'd take the heat in a heartbeat. Of course, warming might get more expensive for us (and we might get a lot richer than 1,800 percent too). There are tipping points in every sphere of life, and what cost us little in the 20th century could cost us enormously in the 21st -- at least that's what we're told.

And boy, are we told. We're (deceitfully) told polar bears are the canaries in the global coal mine. Al Gore even hosts an apocalyptic infomercial on the subject, complete with fancy renderings of New York City underwater.

Skeptics are heckled for calling attention to global warming scare tactics. But the simple fact is that activists need to hype the threat, and not just because that's what the media demand of them. Their proposed remedies cost so much money -- bidding starts at 1 percent of global GDP a year and rises quickly -- they have to ratchet up the fear factor just to get the conversation started.

Undaunted by reality, the hysterical continue ahead.

They tried to warn of dire risks without scaring people so much they'd do nothing - inaction that would lead to the worst possible scenarios.

Although the magnificent creatures are well adapted to the water, and can swim scores of miles to solid land, the distance is getting ever greater as the Arctic ice diminishes.

Today's foray into utter banality has global warming propagandist Al Gore being nominated for the now greatly devalued Nobel Peace Prize.

OSLO, Norway (AP) -- Former Vice President Al Gore was nominated for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his wide-reaching efforts to draw the world's attention to the dangers of global warming, a Norwegian lawmaker said Thursday.

"A prerequisite for winning the Nobel Peace Prize is making a difference, and Al Gore has made a difference," Conservative Member of Parliament Boerge Brende, a former minister of environment and then of trade, told The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, the UN released an absurd report claiming a possible increase of up to 7 degrees by 2100.

The earth's surface temperature will probably rise by between 1.8 and 4.0 C (3.24 and 7.24 F) by the turn of the century, according to a "best estimate" agreed by the UN's top scientific panel for global warming, sources said.

The estimate was released as the world's top climate experts struggled against the clock to hammer out a consensus report on global warming that is already radiating political shockwaves.

The 1.8-4.0 C warming is experts' "best estimate" in forecasts for 2090-2099 compared to 1980-1999, depending on how much carbon dioxide, the principal greenhouse gas, enters the atmosphere by 2100.

Apparently, it's all our fault. Let's just ignore billions of years of climate change and instead, with moral vanity and preening certitude, think that a time period of under 100 years is really all that significant.

PARIS (AP) -- The most authoritative report on climate change is using the strongest wording ever on the source of global warming, saying it is "very likely" caused by humans and already is leading to killer heat waves and stronger hurricanes, delegates who have seen the report said Thursday.

Dozens of scientists and bureaucrats from 113 countries are editing the new report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in closed-door meetings in Paris. Their report, which must be unanimously approved, is to be released Friday and is considered an authoritative document that could influence government and industrial policy worldwide.

It will be interesting to see how much airtime the dissenters are given. I suspect very little.

When you see experts from the UN predicting something may probably be very likely, be very wary. They have no accountability, a miserable track record, and an uncanny knack for ignoring the facts when consistently proven wrong.

As the global warming hysteria reaches epic proportions, the fearmongers have changed the name to climate change, but it hasn't reduced the hot air coming from those who want to ram laws down out throats while dismissing any counter-evidence to their ridiculous claims.

This whole charade is just another power grab by the left, a means of controlling the discussion and lightening our wallets. Do not buy into the propaganda, especially when it's coming from the United Nations.

Two powerful new books say today?s global warming is due not to human activity but primarily to a long, moderate solar-linked cycle. Unstoppable Global Warming Every 1500 Years, by physicist Fred Singer and economist Dennis Avery was released just before Christmas. The Chilling Stars: A New Theory of Climate Change, by Danish physicist Henrik Svensmark and former BBC science writer Nigel Calder (Icon Books), is due out in March.

Singer and Avery note that most of the earth?s recent warming occurred before 1940, and thus before much human-emitted CO2. Moreover, physical evidence shows 600 moderate warmings in the earth?s last million years. The evidence ranges from ancient Nile flood records, Chinese court documents and Roman wine grapes to modern spectral analysis of polar ice cores, deep seabed sediments, and layered cave stalagmites.

Ten years from now, when presented with evidence that all this nonsense was just that--nonsense--the fearmongers and doomsayers will have already moved on to another cause, completely ignoring all the absurd claims they're making today.

WASHINGTON - The Democratic chairman of a House panel examining the government's response to climate change said Tuesday there is evidence that senior Bush administration officials sought repeatedly "to mislead the public by injecting doubt into the science of global warming."

Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., said he and the top Republican on his oversight committee, Rep. Tom Davis of Virginia, have sought documents from the administration on climate policy, but repeatedly been rebuffed.
