Who Came to Pick Them Up?

You have to love silly drunk stories.

The shoo-in to be the next Governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer, might want to keep his employees on a tight leash.

Eliot Spitzer's campaign manager was busted for drunken driving after a rollover car crash upstate two weeks ago, the gubernatorial front-runner's aides confirmed yesterday.

Ryan Toohey's smash-up took place on the Niagara Thruway in Tonawanda at about 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 22, the Buffalo News reported. An apparently speeding Toohey rear-ended a car with his 2004 Volvo, which then overturned. He suffered only a minor scratch above his eye. Then, while Ryan's dad, Tim, was on his way to the police station to pick up his son, he himself was nabbed for drunk driving. Tim Toohey was recently convicted of tax fraud.

"We wound up arresting both father and son . . . Both of these men are fortunate that nobody was hurt," State Police Capt. Michael Nigrelli, commander of Troop T in Buffalo, told the News.

It wasn't immediately clear why it took so long for police reports about the incident to become public.

Sources in Spitzer's camp insisted there was no secrecy attempt on their end, and that Ryan Toohey had only told them about the arrests late Friday.
