Gay American Files for Divorce

I figured this would have been a done deal some time ago. But I assume he's been too busy with his new boytoy and showing up on Oprah to get around to ending his sham marriage.

James E. McGreevey's tenure as New Jersey's governor ended in a mess. Now his marriage may, too.

More than two years after he told the world he was a "gay American" as his wife stood dazed at his side, McGreevey filed for divorce from Dina Matos McGreevey yesterday.

But while the former governor claimed in court papers that the couple had reached a settlement, the former first lady had a very different take on the matter.

"We continue to have profound differences about what our daughter should be exposed to, and until they are resolved, there will be no agreement," she said in a statement through John Post, her attorney.

Post declined to elaborate.

McGreevey filed the two-page complaint in Union County, where the couple has lived separately since he resigned in disgrace in 2004 after admitting to an extramarital affair with a man he appointed his homeland security adviser.

McGreevey, in a brief phone interview yesterday before his wife issued her statement, would say only, "It's a sad day for everyone. It's time to move on with our lives."

Matos McGreevey, 40, lives in Springfield with the couple's 5-year-old daughter, Jacqueline; McGreevey, 49, lives in nearby Plainfield with his partner, Australian-born financier Mark O'Donnell. The former governor has said he and O'Donnell plan to enter into a civil union.

Lawhawk has more.
