I have been following the news of a new GI Bill for education that has been winding its way through congress. There are two versions and both are far better then what is currently available to the men and women of our Armed Forces but now the Democrats in a move purely designed to force the bill to be killed have larded in all kinds of BS ensuring its defeat. The bill as a stand alone would have passed with flying colors.
Greyhawk over on the milblogs has more on it and has been writing about while it has been moving along.
Here is some of the crap they are including now in this education benefits bill:
Amendment 1:
· $162.6 billion to continue funding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan well into 2009.
Amendment 2:
· A requirement to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq within 30 days of passage, with a goal of having all troops out of Iraq by December 2009 (except those providing embassy security).
· A mandate that any unit deployed to Iraq must meet Pentagon requirements that it be "fully mission capable."
· An anti-torture provision that requires the CIA to comply with interrogation techniques in the Army Field Manual.
Amendment 3:
· $1.2 billion for global food aid.
· $5.8 billion to repair levees in Louisiana.
· An additional $11 billion over 10 years for unemployment compensation.
· An expansion of education benefits for returning troops.
In effect a vote against this bill also kills the funding for the war.
Don't let the media lie to you on this either, it is a purely Democrat led action that is leading to this bill to face certain doom.
Vote all of the incumbents out this fall. The Republicans who don't have a spine and the Democrats who care less about the security of citizens then they do about blood sucking leeches in the Amazon, which pretty much describes them also.
I know only about 1% of the citizens of this country have somebody who is in the military but we need all of the citizens to fight for the military men and women this time. Write letters, call your congress critter, donate to the opponent of any incumbent, do whatever you think it will take to get them to pass the GI Bill as a piece of standalone legislation and give the members of our armed forces the opportunity to get a post secondary education to allow them to enter the workforce as civilians and do the same great things they are doing while wearing the uniform of this country.
Fight for them as they have fought for you.
As Winston Churchill told the people of England in WWII "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat" Let's give those in our military something for their blood, sweat and tears that they are shedding for us. Let's give them a congress that is worthy of them and can command the respect of the American people.
