Failed SF Mayor Drops Out of California Governor's Race

He's too busy with a young family or trying to control his lawless city that's been overrun by the homeless hordes. Or something like that. The fact he had no statewide support and was already trailing Jerry Brown by a mile may have also entered into the equation.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who has been seen as a leading contender to be the next governor of California, announced today that he is quitting the race.

Newsom is withdrawing from the Democratic primary amid lackluster poll numbers and meager fund-raising receipts. His withdrawal leaves state Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown, who is expected to run even though he has not officially entered the race, with little opposition in the Democratic primary.

“It is with great regret I announce today that I am withdrawing from the race for governor of California,” Newsom said in a statement. “With a young family and responsibilities at City Hall, I have found it impossible to commit the time required to complete this effort the way it needs to — and should be — done. This is not an easy decision. But it is one made with the best intentions for my wife, my daughter, the residents of the city and county of San Francisco, and California Democrats.”

Although Newsom had been effectively running for more than a year, his campaign never gained much traction. Even in his hometown, which Newsom touted as a model of cutting-edge policies, his candidacy was widely derided among civic insiders.

Cutting edge policies, like allowing vagrants to set up shop where they please.

The fact the guy wan an alcoholic and slept with his friend's wife may have also contributed to his lack of support. From a comment at the link:

Got news for you, Newsom. Maybe there is such a thing as being too liberal. And sleeping with your bud's wife isn't cool either.

Newsom dropped the word "young" into his exit speech, a move that helps remind people he's a rising political star who in all likelihood plans to try again for higher office, just once he tackles some of those festering homelessness and crime problems he promised to attack when first elected mayor six years ago.

Though losing an alcoholic wife-fucker like Newsom will take some fun out of the gubernatorial race, the contest still features Democratic hopeful Brown, who proposed a state space academy last time he was governor, and Republican contender Meg Whitman, the former eBay CEO whose personal voting record is "unacceptable," according to one Meg Whitman.

In case you forgot about his sordid affair, here's a refresher.

For Newsom - who reported having just $1.2 million on hand as of June - the task of raising enough money to challenge Brown was daunting. Recent spending reports show that even a big Los Angeles fundraiser with former President Bill Clinton pulled in just 13 individual contributions over $5,000 - hardly the kind of cash haul to signal Newsom would be able to mount a serious challenge.

That effort was made more difficult by the fact that Democratic Party officials had pressured the mayor to refrain from attacking Brown and perhaps damaging him in the general election.

"In this environment, I think the Obama administration should be very careful of its dealings with anybody who can be labeled communist accurately," said Christopher C. Hull, an adjunct government professor at Georgetown University who runs the public affairs firm Issue Management.

"That's just going to play to the political sensibility that those on the right have that the Obama administration is socialist, literally socialist. ... It is unwise to bring in people who actually do label themselves socialist or communist."

Jones has mellowed considerably since the '90s. In some respects, he is about as mainstream as environmentalists come -- with recognition streaming in from high places over the past few years.

He's won plaudits from former Vice President Al Gore, who declared, "I love Van Jones," in an interview with The New Yorker.

The mayor of San Francisco also has the hots for Jones.

Guess who else is a big fan of Van: (Besides Al Gore.) SF Mayor and CA Gov. candidate Gavin Newsom. The Mayor described Van "a superstar" to us before he introduced him at the 2008 Netroots Nation (Daily Kos) conference.

Sure seems like Jones had a chip on his shoulder about Fox News long before Glenn Beck was hired.

Everything you've done up until now has just been prologue, it's just been the preface. You proven that you can beat the opposition. You can't have successful opposition movement without opposition media. And you've proven that you can in a very short period of time you built an absolute counterweight to FOX and to Rush Limbaugh, the -- everything the Conservatives built up in 20 years, you were able to match and checkmate and four. It's a huge achievement in the history of human civilization. You did that. You did that. If the republic will be saved, it's because of your efforts, that's true.

Newsom: Bottled Water for Me, But Not For Thee

Another hypocrite who, by his own standards, is an environmental criminal.

This week, the City Insider spotted an almost empty case of bottled water in the back of Mayor Gavin Newsom's hybrid sport utility vehicle as it was parked in front of City Hall. At least one full bottle of Crystal Geyser Alpine Spring Water remained under the plastic covering.

This from the mayor who in June 2007 issued an executive order directing city government to no longer purchase bottled water, saying the containers clog landfills while the city owns a pristine reservoir in the Sierra Nevada that produces some of the country's best-rated tap water.

Newsom, a former restaurateur, last year called on the restaurant industry to stop selling bottled water to customers and start serving local tap water instead.

Because of that, the mayor generally declines bottled water at any event or meeting, lest he be photographed with an offending bottle.

This is water we're talking about here folks. Water.

These PC clowns are so out of control they make it as if taking a sip of water is some sort of crime. Which before long I'm sure it will be.

"The mayor will be the first to admit that he occassionally [sic] indulges in bottled water," Ballard said. "It's not something he's proud of."

The folks in San Francisco should be more concerned whether he's still sleeping with the wife of an aide and drinking too much instead of worrying about whether he's drinking bottled water. Then again, he's the hypocrite for not practicing what he preaches.

After Two-Week Temper Tantrum, California Supremes to Hear Challenge to Prop 8

If anything, it'll give the children a time-out two weeks in coming.

Question: If they do not rule in favor of the gay mob, what then? Considering how nasty the insane rage has been, who knows what the psychotic reaction could be.

California's Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear a legal challenge against the state's voter-approved ban on gay marriage and let the ban stand in the meantime.

A decision by the same court in May had opened marriage to same-sex couples in America's most populous state, one of a handful of states, provinces and mostly European countries where such unions are recognized.

When state voters passed the ban on November 4, social conservatives celebrated, but nationwide protests by gays and other ban opponents since then have given the debate new life.

The court case also pits two fundamental concepts of U.S. democracy against one another, with gay marriage advocates saying the proposition would open the doors to systematic repression of minorities and opponents saying courts must recognize the will of the people under separation of powers doctrine.

"I am optimistic that the Supreme Court will affirm that separate is not equal," San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said in a statement. "This is a great day for the rule of law and the voters of California," said Andrew Pugno, counsel for the gay marriage ban proponents.

Let's all hope the out of control, radical gay community will now enjoy a few months downtime and stop harassing ans intimidating people, though if I were in the California Supreme Court, I'd probably be prepared for all sorts of antics.

Idiot SF Mayor Wakes Up, Will Turn Over Illegal Alien Crack Dealers to Feds

Maybe this dope realized his political future was rather limited, which hopefully it is regardless of today's decision.

No more protecting juvenile felons who are in the country illegally, San Francisco May Gavin Newsom now says.

The about-face follows the news from earlier this week about eight young Honduran crack dealers who escaped from group homes in Southern California. Under the city's 1989 sanctuary declaration, San Francisco officials tried to shield the youths from being deported by federal immigration authorities.

Newsom, a Democrat who is considering a run for governor in 2010, said he didn't know the city was shielding juvenile offenders from deportation, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Nevertheless, he said, "ignorance is no defense."

Nor is disdaining the laws of your nation, asshole.

This pantload actually fancies himself as governor of California.

Good luck with that.

He's just not taken seriously.

Given Newsom's problems with alcohol and philandering and his reputation as a "pretty boy," Tony said ultimately, "I don't see him as a serious candidate." He thinks it comes down to Brown and Lt. Gov. John Garamendi.
