Latest Political Scandal: Chair-Sniffing

While we here in America have to deal with the usual political scandals like drunk driving and presidents getting blowjobs in the White House, things are rather unusual down under.

Seriously, who in the right mind would do something like this, let alone fess up to it?
SUPPORTERS of West Australian Opposition Leader Troy Buswell are confident a proposed leadership spill against him sparked by a chair sniffing scandal will not succeed.

Mr Buswell has been under intense pressure to resign after admitting last week that in 2005 he sniffed the chair of a female Liberal staffer at parliament house after she had stood up.

Party whip Graham Jacobs today repeated he would move a spill motion at a party room meeting tomorrow and would support treasury spokesman Steve Thomas to take over from Mr Buswell.

Mr Thomas said if he was nominated for the leader's position he would accept.

"I think the one thing I offer that nobody else does is a fresh start," Mr Thomas said. Deputy leader Kim Hames has stood by Mr Buswell since the latest scandal erupted and has indicated he would nominate for the leader's position in the event of a spill where Mr Buswell did not stand himself.

Mr Buswell's supporters have been buoyed by the positive reception he received at the Liberal Party state council yesterday.

Women's interest spokeswoman Helen Morton was confident she and other supporters of the embattled leader would have the numbers to defeat the motion.

"These incidents we've been hearing about are well and truly in the past. He recognises that inappropriateness," Ms Morton said.

"I still believe he's the best person to lead the party."
