'Secret' Grand Jury Convenes in Dirty Tricks Probe

I hope former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer sleeps well at night. He'd probably be the only one involved in this mess who does.

Now that a former New York State Trooper has committed suicide, this no longer involves power and politics. People's lives and reputations are at stake and all because Spitzer wanted to steamroll people.
ATTORNEY General Andrew Cuomo has secretly convened a grand jury to consider bringing criminal charges in the explosive State Police scandal probe that was rocked by a suicide late last week, The Post has learned.

The grand jury, which could bring charges against several current and former State Police officials, was the source of the subpoenas issued last month by Cuomo's office for e-mails and BlackBerry messages tied to Daniel Wiese, a onetime State Police colonel and now-suspended New York Power Authority inspector general.

The grand jury also was the source for the subpoena on Friday for the suicide note left Thursday by Gary Berwick, the former security chief for Govs. Eliot Spitzer and George Pataki and a Wiese protege, a source close to the NYPA said.

The source said an examination of the subpoena sent to the NYPA showed it originated with a grand jury under Cuomo's control.

Few in or out of state government realize that Gov. Paterson authorized the grand jury in late March.

Paterson sent Cuomo an extraordinary letter authorizing a probe of allegations that rogue State Police officials were involved in plots against state legislators, other politicians and, possibly, the governor himself.
Good for Governor Paterson for authorizing this. This nonsense has gone on far too long, there have been too many cover-ups and it's time the people of New York got the truth, if they ever do.

When you set about to ruin lives all over an ego trip, eventually you have to pay a price. Those who went along with Spitzer need to fess up and let the chips fall where they may.

Then Spitzer and rogue State Police officials must be held accountable.
