Polls Still Show a Dead Heat

As we're now a week away from the Democrat Convention, the left must be getting just a bit nervous that Barack Obama is stuck in a dead heat with John McCain.

According to today's Rasmussen poll, the race has Obama ahead 44-43% and 47-46% with leaner included.

Gallup Sunday has the race tied at 45% each.

If you go by the RCP average, Obama is up a couple of points, but three of those polls are a couple of weeks old, so the positive Obama spread is questionable.

I don't see where Obama's impending vice presidential announcement will provide any boost. Of course, whoever he picks, the media will tout them as having gravitas and how much it will help the ticket.

For all the money he's raised, for the nonstop fawning coverage he's received, how is it Obama isn't 10 points ahead?

An interesting note from Rasmussen:
Forty-six percent (46%) of voters now believe Obama is likely to win the White House in November. That’s down from 54% in June but little changed from a month ago. Twenty-eight percent (28%) expect McCain to win and 22% say it’s too close to call. Nine percent (9%) expect an Obama landslide victory while 4% say McCain will win big.
Of course, Obama has declared he'll win and that could backfire. Some people just love sticking it to the arrogant.

As for the VP selection, Obama is boxing himself in now by dragging out the announcement further. Normally you'd expect it a bit before the convention, but now it appears it may be right at convention time. One name has resurfaced.
Saturday, Obama cited former Georgia Senator Sam Nunn, 69, as a particularly wise advisor, touching off a wave of speculation.

There’s also a chance that the Summer Olympics, which run through next Sunday, could push the campaign to delay the move until the beginning of the Democratic National Convention the next day.
Of course picking Nunn will amplify Obama's lack of experience and zero credibility on military affairs. It will also remove the left's ridiculous charges that John McCain is some senile old man who can't remember what he had for breakfast.

Now since the GOP Convention comes immediately after the Democrats, what are the chances McCain will try and steal some thunder by announcing his selection during the Democrat Convention?

Can you imagine the freakout from the media and Democrats? Here's hoping he does it just to see the meltdown.
