We noted this horrific attack the other day.
Today Michael Ainsworth returned to work.
Canon Michael Ainsworth returned to his parish this week after 12 days in hospital.Ya think?
The 57-year-old had been kicked and punched in the head by youths in his churchyard after asking them to be quiet.
One of them is said to have shouted: "****ing priest".
The gang of three fled when another group of youths stepped in to help him.
The attack happened on March 5. Mr Ainsworth, a father of four, was discharged from hospital soon after the attack but was re-admitted with complications.
On Tuesday he returned to his congregation with his face still swollen from the deep cuts, bruising and two black eyes.
His wife Janina, who is also an ordained priest, said: "There is a lot of shock and distress around the congregation and the area.
"Quite clearly there are mindless individuals in every community, quite often under the influence of drink or drugs, that engage in random acts of violence.
"The community organisations here are very shocked. It is obvious that it does contain a religious element."
On one occasion youths were heard to shout: "This should not be a church, this should be a mosque."
