Bungling Mets Fire Willie Randolph

It's difficult to imagine botching a managerial dismissal any worse than what the New York Mets did early this morning by announcing Willie Randolph's dismissal at 3:14 in the morning on the east coast.

While the move itself was a no-brainer just a week ago after a disastrous four-game sweep in San Diego, by waiting another week, having Randolph fly back to the West Coast with the team again Sunday night, and after the Mets just won three of four win a 9-6 win over the Angels in Anaheim, to jettison him in the dead of night is just a public relations disaster.

About the only thing you can do to make this worse is have Isiah Thomas take over for Randolph.

They just took a guy whose scalp the fans have been clamoring for since last September and made him out to be a martyr.

The firing isn't even four hours old, most fans probably aren't aware yet and the fallout has just begun.

Mike Vaccaro of the New York Post goes nuclear.

More fallout and player reaction here.

Say what you want about Randolph's managerial ability, but he's a class guy.

He didn't deserve this, not this way, with ownership safely home in their beds in the dark of night.

Classless.
