Yemeni Woman Detained in Terror Plot

Yemeni authorities on Saturday arrested a woman thought to be involved in sending explosive packages headed to the United States and were searching for more suspects belived linked to al-Qaida, Yemeni security officials said.

The arrest came after authorities surrounded a house where she was hiding in the capital San'a, Reuters reported.

A security official told Reuters that authorities traced the woman through a telephone number she left with a cargo company.

Always snared through their own stupidity.

Sophisticated bombs contained in packages sent from Yemen were designed to explode in the air and bring down the cargo planes carrying them, the government confirmed.

Intelligence experts believe the use of the devices, contained in printer cartridges on board two Chicago-bound cargo planes, represents a shift in terrorist tactics to commercial targets.

Both devices, one discovered in the hold of a plane that landed at East Midlands airport after flying from Cologne, the other on a plane in Dubai, were described as "extremely professional" by intelligence officials.

One of the devices was linked to a mobile phone, while the other was attached to a timer. The Observer understands that the East Midlands device was so sophisticated an examination by forensics experts initially suggested it did not contain explosives.

"Even when it was examined, the sniffer dogs couldn't detect it," a security source said. "It was only when they [forensics experts] had a second look at it they realised what it was."

It has emerged the devices were discovered only after a tip-off from Saudi intelligence. "This… started with good information from the Saudis," the US homeland security secretary, Janet Napolitano, confirmed. "We were then immediately able to work with other countries, particularly the UK and the UAE, to segregate these packages, to begin the analysis about what they were, what they could have done."

If the devices had blown up over the Atlantic, or any other large stretch of water, identifying the cause would have been difficult because there would have been little trace left of the planes.

Ground Zero imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, who came under fire for once saying Osama bin Laden was "made in the USA," yesterday stopped short of using the word "terrorists" to describe the murderous 9/11 hijackers, instead calling them "those who attacked America."

During an interview on Al Jazeera TV, recorded during a trip to Doha in the Persian Gulf, Rauf was asked whether 9/11 affected the "discourse of American Muslims."

Yes, let's just worry about the feeling of American Muslims. Forget the hundreds of millions of other Americans who are affected by terrorism.

"Islam was seen as a national security threat in America because the . . .," Rauf said, pausing in mid-sentence before continuing, "because those who've attacked America utilized the vocabulary of religion."

No, those who attacked America were devout Muslims shouting Allah Akbar when they murdered our countrymen.

Why can't he just admit this? He might actually gain a little credibility if he just came out and told the truth. Instead he plays weasel word games.

Times Square Bomber So Enraged By Bush Tax Cuts He Planned Second Bombing

Just trying to keep up with the kneejerk liberal logic here. Considering it was suggested the Times Square bomber must have been upset over ObamaCare, it would stand to reason another leftist pet peeve may have inspired him to further mayhem?

Prosecutors say the man who admitted trying to bomb Times Square boasted that he thought it would kill at least 40 people and said he planned to detonate a second bomb in New York city two weeks after the first.

The government included the details Wednesday in a court filing before Faisal Shahzad is sentenced next week. He faces life in prison.

Shahzad was arrested two days after his May 1 attempted bombing fizzled in a Times Square packed with tourists. The bomb he had packed into the back of a sports utility vehicle sputtered and did not explode.

Let's not pay any attention to the real and credible threat of actual Muslim terrorism, which today includes an American citizen picked up in Spain for financing Al Qaeda. No, let's worry about mythical "Islamophobia" instead.

KINGS, emirs and presidents from Muslim nations have appealed at the UN for the West to clamp down on attacks on Islam, which they warned were a growing threat to international security.

In speeches to the United Nations General Assembly, leaders said “Islamophobia” was causing a growing Muslim-West divide and one top Arab minister put the international community on guard against a “civilisation clash”.

A threat to burn the Koran by a fringe US church, controversy over a proposed mosque near the scene of the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York and assaults on Islamic symbols in European countries have been a major talking point for Muslim nations.

Normally strong allies of the West have spoken out at the UN against the growing religious tensions in the past week.

Many were embarrassed by comments by Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad linking the US government to 9/11, diplomats said.

But Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the emir of Qatar, who has launched western-backed diplomatic initiatives to settle wars ranging from Sudan to the Israel-Palestian conflict, condemned attempts to link Islam with terrorism. He partly blamed the US “war on terror” declared after September 11.

Since 9/11 there have been thousands of terror attacks carried out by Muslims. But we're supposed to pretend none of that is happening and instead freak out over some kook burning a Koran.

“We disagree with the attribution of this so-called terrorism to the Islamic religion because this -- in addition to being incorrect -- is a historical injustice that is refuted by evidence from recent history.”

Pathetic.

How About a Moratorium on Citizenship for Pakistani Immigrants?

Since we've put a halt to any new offshore drilling in the wake of the BP disaster, how about we put a halt to any new citizenships for Pakistani immigrants in the wake of the arrest of Faisal Shahzad?

Shouldn't we do some better screening of current applicants in the meantime?

Heck, we don't even know who sponsored Faisal's citizenship.

In December 1998 he was granted an F-1 student visa. Immigration officials noted then that there was “no derogatory information” on Mr. Shahzad in any database, a law enforcement official said.

He first attended Southeastern University in Washington, DC, then transferred in 2000 to the University of Bridgeport, Conn., where he received a B.A. in computer science and engineering.

He next appears in April, 2002, when he was granted an H1-B visa for skilled workers; he stayed in the U.S. for three years on that visa and gained an M.B.A. It is not clear what company sponsored the visa, which is used to attract workers with a “specialty occupation,” such as information technology.

Then on October 20, 2008, he reported his marriage to a woman he identified as Huma Asif Mian, an American citizen. He became a naturalized as a U.S. citizen on April 17, 2009.

While law enforcement officials don’t have exhaustive details of his travels after he was naturalized, one trip in particular stands out: he left New York on June 2, 2009, on an Emirates flight to Dubai. He stayed overseas for eight months, returning on February 3, 2010, on another Emirates flight from Dubai.

While he was overseas he apparently went into foreclosure, which the sob sisters at CNN are reporting may have sent him over the edge.

CNN anchor: "It can confirmed that his house has been foreclosed in recent years. I mean, one would have to imagine that brought a lot of pressure and a lot of heartache on that family."

Question: If he was in foreclosure and had no visible means of support, how was he able to pay $1300 in cash for the SUV last week and for a one-way ticket out of the country last night?

Another question: If foreclosure drove him over the edge, why aren't we seeing millions of car bombings across the country considering the number of foreclosures in recent years?

Obama's Homeland Security Assessment Avoids the Dreaded I-Word

If there's a silver lining, I see no mention of the absurd term "man-caused disaster" in this report and they do actually mention terrorism a number of times. But there's not a single mention of "Islam," "Islamic" or "Islamist" anywhere to be found.

Two new documents laying out the Obama administration's defense and homeland security strategy over the next four years describe the nation's terrorist enemies in a number of ways but fail to mention the words Islam, Islamic or Islamist.

The 108-page Quadrennial Homeland Security Review, made public last week by the Department of Homeland Security, uses the term "terrorist" a total of 66 times, "al Qaeda" five times and "violent extremism" or "extremist" 14 times. It calls on the U.S. government to "actively engage communities across the United States" to "stop the spread of violent extremism."

Yet in describing terrorist threats against the United States and the ideology that motivates terrorists, the review - like its sister document from the Pentagon, the Quadrennial Defense Review - does not use the words "Islam," "Islamic" or "Islamist" a single time.

Although the homeland security official in charge of developing the review insists it was a not a deliberate decision, the document is likely to reignite a debate over terminology in the U.S.-led war against al Qaeda that has been simmering through two administrations.

"There was not an active choice" to avoid using terms derivative of Islam, Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Policy David Heyman told reporters on a conference call. President Obama had "made it clear as we are looking at counterterrorism that our principal focus is al Qaeda and global violent extremism, and that is the terminology and language that has been articulated" by Mr. Obama and his advisers, Mr. Heyman added. He declined to use the I-word.

Even squishy RINO's find this ridiculous.

Sen. Susan Collins, Maine Republican, said in a statement that she was "struck" by what she called the "glaring omission."

Other kinds of extremism - for instance, white supremacism - are also seen as threats by many analysts, but they generally are acknowledged to pose a much less significant danger.

"To understand a threat and counter it, we must know our enemy," said Ms. Collins, the ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee. "While there are other threats to our national security from other types of violent extremism, the gravest threat comes from Islamist extremists. ... In a review such as this, it is critical that we identify and address the specific threat posed by Islamist extremism."

Ms. Collins noted that the publicly available portions of the recent Pentagon report on the attack at Fort Hood also did not use terms related to Islam. "We shouldn't be reluctant to identify our enemy," she said.

Don't let it be said the Obama administration is reluctant to identify their enemies. Just look at their failed wars against Rush Limbaugh and Fox News.

Cops fear that 25 British-born Muslims are plotting to bomb Western airliners.

The fanatics, in five groups, are now training at secret terror camps in Yemen.

It was there London-educated Umar Abdulmutallab, 23, prepared for his Christmas Day bid to blow up a US jet.

The British extremists in Yemen are in their early 20s and from Bradford, Luton and Leytonstone, East London.

They are due to return to the UK early in 2010 and will then await Internet instructions from al-Qaeda on when to strike.

Islamic Outreach: 'The Christians of America, My Message Is This: We Worship the Same God'

A former Georgia Tech student charged with plotting to help terrorist groups turned the closing arguments in his federal trial on Thursday into a bewildering lesson on Islamic principles amid stunned courtroom observers.

Syed Haris Ahmed, 24, had waived his right to a jury trial so he could deliver closing arguments and warned last month he would use his time to focus on the "message of Islam."

Even so, the judge, prosecutors and even his defense attorney seemed unprepared: He read nine verses of the Quran in Arabic and never directly addressed the charges that could land him 15 years in federal prison.

"I hope that if I deliver the message that has been revealed by Allah, the promise of protection from evil will come to me," Ahmed said during the hushed and sometimes stumbling 45-minute address.

Prosecutors contend that Ahmed and Ehsanul Islam Sadequee took a 2005 road trip to Washington, D.C., to shoot 62 "casing videos" of the Pentagon, the Capitol and other landmarks they wanted to send overseas to earn the respect of foreign terrorists.

The clips, as well as Ahmed's alleged attempts to connect with terrorists in Canada and Pakistan, are at the center of federal charges that he provided support for terrorism in the U.S. and abroad.

Sadequee, who has also pleaded not guilty, is scheduled to go on trial in August.

Don't forget: Islam is a religion of peace.

The defendant, wearing a white skullcap and scraggly beard, got his chance a few hours later when he walked to the podium directly in front of U.S. District Judge William Duffey.

He said no one harassed him about his beliefs during his 10 years living in Georgia, and said he only wanted to help the public understand his faith.

He spoke of linguistic similarities between Hebrew and Arabic, quoted from the Quran and the Bible, and delved into some of the shared beliefs of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

"The Christians of America, my message is this: We worship the same God," he said.

Obama Finally Notices Murder of Private Long

Maybe if Private William Long performed partial-birth abortions his killing would have caught the attention of Barack Hussein Obama a little quicker.

But since he was an Army soldier murdered by a Muslim jihadist, it wasn't worth mentioning for over two days, and until after Obama left the country.

Meanwhile, in a statement released by the White House Wednesday, President Obama said, “I am deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence against two brave young soldiers who were doing their part to strengthen our armed forces and keep our country safe. I would like to wish Quinton Ezeagwula a speedy recovery, and to offer my condolences and prayers to William Long’s family as they mourn the loss of their son.”

Deeply saddened, huh? So much you ignored this murder for over 48 hours.

Recruiting Center Gunman Had 'Political and Religious Motives'

Hmm. Let's see. Religious motive, eh? His name was Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad.

I wonder what religion that could be? Curiously, the story doesn't mention a religion.

A man with "political and religious motives" killed a soldier just out of basic training and wounded another Monday in a targeted attack on a military recruiting center, police said. The shootings were not believed to be part of a broader scheme.

The soldiers completed basic training within the past two weeks and were not regular recruiters, said Lt. Col. Thomas F. Artis of the Oklahoma City Recruiting Battalion, which oversees the Little Rock office.

William Long, 24, of Conway, died, and Quinton Ezeagwula, 18, of Jacksonville, was wounded and in stable condition, Police Chief Stuart Thomas said.

Both men were from nearby hometowns and volunteered to work at the recruiting center to attract other locals to the military. "They can show the example, 'Here's where I was, and here is where I am,'" Artis said.

Police arrested Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, 23, along a crosstown interstate moments after the shootings at the Army-Navy Career Center in a shopping center in west Little Rock.

Muhammad acted alone, the police chief said, and based on an interview with officers, the suspect "probably had political and religious motives for the attack." He lived in an apartment just 1.5 miles from the recruiting center. A search warrant had been obtained for the apartment.

Thomas said Muhammad, previously known as Carlos Bledsoe, would be charged with first-degree murder, plus 15 counts of committing a terroristic act. Thomas said those counts result from the gunfire occurring near other people.

Interestingly, the leftwing blogosphere is silent.

London Homicide Bombers Were Funded By BBC's 'Children in Need'

Some people would have complained, but of course that would have caused a grave offense to the people who want to kill them.

Funny how that is.

The BBC's Children in Need gave £20,000 raised by the general public to fund the 7/7 bombers, it emerged last night.

The cash was given to an Islamic bookshop operated by bombers Mohammed Siddique Khan and Shehzad Tanweer who spent it on propaganda videos glorifying Jihad.

It also funded computers, gym equipment and the notorious rafting trip to North Wales made by the pair a month before the attacks on London in 2005, which killed 52 and maimed hundreds.

Relatives of those who died in the atrocity claimed Children in Need was hampered from asking about the money for fear of causing offence to Muslims.

Children in Need Chief Executive David Ramsden last night said he was 'extremely concerned' and ordered an investigation.

But he insisted the charity had had no idea the money was being used to fund terrorism.

The £20,000 was part of an award made to Leeds Community School in the Beeston area of the city

The school was awarded just short of £250,000, of which £20,000 came from Children in Need and was given between 1999 and 2002.

Along with the school, the money also paid for the adjoining Iqra bookshop, which was run by the bombers and was the first place they came together to hatch their plans.

Children in Need and Leeds Council thought they were funding educational work for local children.

Instead, according to Martin Gilbertson, who worked at both the bookshop and the community centre, the atmosphere was anything but educational.

'They blamed everything on the Jewish conspiracy, they hated western culture it was like living with Jihad on a daily basis', he said.

They and Khalid Khaliq, who was jailed this year for terrorism offences, were all trustess of the Beeston Iqra charity.

According to Mr Gilbertson all three made a point of persuading local authorities to hand over hundreds of thousands of pounds which they subsequently used for terror purposes.

When Mohammed Siddique Khan detonated his bomb at Edgware Road tube station one of those who died was 22-year-old David Foulkes who was on his way to a job interview.

His father Graham Foulkes, from Oldham near Manchester, said he was 'horrified' and 'staggered' Children in Need had been funding those who killed his boy. But he claimed that he knew why no questions had been asked.

He said: 'There is a fear of anybody putting their hands up and saying 'just a minute NO' that the community will use that as - will accuse people of being racist or islamophobic and people are so frightened of being branded or labelled with these things that the easy thing to do is just to say yes and give them the money and I think the Jihadist network know that, they manipulate that, they manage it, and they will pull the wool over our eyes'.

Peaceful Religious Men Admit Bomb Plot Role

They look like such fine, upstanding young men, don't they?

Well, they're admitting to having a role in a plot to bomb Heathrow, but aren't quite ready to divulge all.

Though the way things are going in Britain, they'll probably be walking free by the weekend.

Three British Muslims accused of plotting to blow up transatlantic planes flying out of Heathrow with liquid bombs admitted today attempting to cause explosions.

Abdulla Ahmed Ali, 27, Assad Sarwar, 28, and Tanvir Hussain, 27, admitted the offence at Woolwich Crown Court, in South-East London.

But they still deny that their bombs were part of a wave of suicide attacks on US-bound passenger jets using homemade devices made of hydrogen peroxide smuggled on board in Lucozade and Oasis soft drinks bottles.

Instead they claim they were only planning to set off small devices around London in protest at UK foreign policy and had no intention to kill or cause injuries.

The three men listed potential targets as the Houses of Parliament, Heathrow Terminal Three, other 'iconic' buildings or sites such as oil refineries.

The jury must now decide whether they - and five other defendants - are guilty of conspiracy to murder.

The three men also admitted conspiring to cause public nuisance by distributing videos threatening suicide bomb attacks in Britain.

Two of their co-defendants, Ibrahim Savant, 27, and Umar Islam, 30, also admitted conspiring to cause a public nuisance.

Man of Mysterious Religious Affiliation Goes on Trial for Shooting Jews

Out in Seattle today a man went on trial for the murder of a woman and the shooting of five others back in 2006. Though there is ample evidence the man is affiliated with a certain religion, through 21 paragraphs, the reporter for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer somehow manages to avoid identifying what religion that is.

Lets see if we can sift through for some clues and help out reporter Tracy Johnson.

Naveed Haq was delusional and believed that "God had sanctioned his actions" when he killed one woman and wounded five others at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, his lawyer told jurors Monday.

OK, so his named is Naveed Haq, he was supposedly sanction by God and he pulled off his act of terror at a Jewish center.

Hmm. No clue apparently. Maybe this part can provide a bit more evidence.

He is accused of ranting about Jews, the U.S. troops in Iraq and the situation in the Middle East, where Israel had been engaged in increasing violence with Hezbollah forces in Lebanon.

No, none of those factors alerts Johnson to the fact that Haq is, (surprise!) a Muslim.

Is the Seattle PI so thoroughly PC they can't even identify Haq for what he is? Apparently so.

Meanwhile, the same affliction has overcome reporter Natalie Singer at the Seattle Times. Singer labors through 18 paragraphs and not a single mention of the M Word.

Defense attorney John Carpenter, in his opening statement, did not dispute that Haq opened fire in the Jewish Federation offices. But he contends that Haq was insane at the time.

Haq, 32, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to one count of aggravated first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and a slew of other charges, including malicious harassment — the state's hate-crime law. The trial is expected to last four weeks.

"Mr. Haq believed that what he was doing was actually going to reverse the course of two wars and have a positive societal effect," Carpenter said. "This is insanity."

Actually, it sounds like Netroots thinking, but I digress.

Wait, here's a stunner. Let's give some credit where due. In a mildly shocking development, AP identifies Haq. Granted, you have to wait ten paragraphs.

Ehlert said Haq was on a mission to make a political statement: "That the Jewish people in America have too much power."

Ehlert played a recording of a 911 call in which Haq, a U.S.-born Muslim, asked to be connected to CNN and said he was making a point about U.S. support for Israel and the war in Iraq.

"I don't care if I die," Haq told the operator. "This is just to make a point."

Muslim Terrorists Complain Prison is 'Too White'

Aw, the poor things. Imagine the horrors of being subjected to some abuse, just because you planned mass murder with a dirty bomb.

What's more pathetic is the authorities acquiesced and accommodated them.

Just ridiculous.

Two of Britain's most dangerous terrorists have been moved to different prisons after complaining their fellow inmates were "too white".

Dhiren Barot and Omar Khyam asked to be transferred from high-security Frankland prison near Durham.

Barot masterminded a radioactive bomb plot involving limousines packed with nails and explosives and Khyam plotted to blow up Bluewater shopping centre in Kent.

Imagine the hysteria if some white prisoners complained about being around too many Muslims? Why they'd be in sensitivity training until the end of their term, if they weren't killed in jail first.

They said they were at risk from other inmates - who are predominantly white - and claimed the environment was "dangerous" to ethnic minority prisoners. It is thought they had received death threats and attacks.

Although their requests were initially turned down, Barot, who is serving a minium of 30 years, has since been moved to Belmarsh in south-east London.

Khyam has also been moved to Full Sutton near York.

But news of the transfers has sparked outrage, with the Prison Service being accused of caving into prisoners' demands.

Barot's solicitor Miss Mudassar Arani, asked if his client could be removed from Frankland prison after a fellow inmate threw boiling water and oil over him last July.

The 35-year-old suffered serious burns and spent a week in hospital.

Prisoner Gary Moody was charged with wounding and assault but the case was dropped when Barot refused to press charges.

Radical Muslim Cleric Will Be Extradited to U.S.

Let's just hope he's not waterboarded, otherwise the Democrats might wet their pants.

A British court ruled Thursday that radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri can be extradited to the United States, a member of al-Masri's defense team confirmed to CNN, though any final decision on extradition is still several months away.

Al-Masri's legal advisers said they were still exploring avenues of appeal, a process which could take months. Under British law, al-Masri must be allowed to exhaust his appeals before any extradition proceedings continue.

The British home secretary also has until the end of the cleric's current seven-year jail term to approve the extradition, though the Home Office said Secretary Jacqui Smith was expected to make a decision "shortly."

Al-Masri, who lost both hands and one eye working in Afghanistan, is the highest-profile radical Islamic figure in Britain.

Working in Afghanistan? Must have been one of those dreaded work accidents.

He formerly preached at the Finsbury Park Mosque in London. His followers included the so-called "shoe bomber" Richard Reid -- who was convicted of trying to light a bomb in his shoes on a trans-Atlantic flight -- and Zacarias Moussaoui, the only person to be charged in the United States in connection with the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.

The Egyptian-born cleric began serving a seven-year prison sentence last year after being convicted in a British court of soliciting murder and inciting racial hatred.

But he is also facing 11 terrorism-related charges in the United States, which has promised to press for his extradition when British law allows.

The U.S. charges include conspiracy in connection with a 1998 kidnapping in Yemen and conspiring with others to establish an Islamic jihad, or holy war, training camp in rural Oregon in 1999.

45 Doctors of Death Planned U.S. Attacks

The President is constantly ridiculed by the left when he says the terrorists will follow us to America if we do not finish the job eradicating them in Iraq and elsewhere.

Funny how silent they've been since the Doctors of Death terror ring has been busted up the past week.

Well, here's more ammunition for his case, and I hope the adults on the Democrat side of the aisle are paying attention.

45 Muslim doctors planned US terror raids

A group of 45 Muslim doctors threatened to use car bombs and rocket grenades in terrorist attacks in the United States during discussions on an extremist internet chat site.

Police found details of the discussions on a site run by one of a three-strong "cyber-terrorist" gang.

They were discovered at the home of Younis Tsouli, 23, Woolwich Crown Court in south-east London heard.

One message read: "We are 45 doctors and we are determined to undertake jihad and take the battle inside America.

"The first target which will be penetrated by nine brothers is the naval base which gives shelter to the ship Kennedy." This is thought to have been a reference to the USS John F Kennedy, which is often at Mayport Naval Base in Jacksonville, Florida.

New Effort To End War Set Monday

WASHINGTON -- Five weeks after President Bush won unfettered funding for America to fight the war in Iraq until September, Senate Democrats will try again on Monday to end the war.

Their opening gambit this summer will be three key amendments to the 2008 bill that authorizes defense spending. The bill is set to be marked up on July 9. Most appealing to wavering Republicans will be an amendment offered by a senator who served as President Reagan's secretary of the Navy, a Democrat from Virginia, James Webb. Mr. Webb proposes to lengthen the leave time of active and reserve duty soldiers, making reinforcement of the current surge next to impossible.

Glasgow, London Attacks Carried Out by Same Men

More breaking news on the UK attacks by Muslim terrorists.

The attempted attacks on London's West End and Glasgow airport were allegedly carried out by the same men, Sky sources say.

Sky's Foreign Affairs editor, Tim Marshall, said the two allegedly planted the car bombs in central London before heading to Scotland.

"We have had it confirmed by sources that the two men who attempted to bomb London, it would appear, are the same two people who allegedly attempted to bomb Glasgow airport," said Marshall.

"In other words after that failed attempt they quickly went up to Glasgow and arranged this.

"I also understand that Scotland Yard were pretty much on their trail already."

Marshall said police were also already watching one of the eight arrested by police investigating the two bomb plots.

"The domestic security services were already aware of one of those arrested," he said.

It apparently has been confirmed that sevin of the eight Muslim terrorists in custody are doctors.

A total of eight people are being held in connection with the failed bombings - the latest an Indian doctor arrested in Australia.

Seven of those eight are believed to be doctors or trainee doctors, while the one woman under arrest is a trained laboratory researcher.

The Indian doctor, Mohammed Haneef, was detained at Brisbane International airport last night at the request of the British authorities.

The latest news out of London is Heathrow Terminal 4 has been evacuated due to a suspicious package, all while investigators reveal up to 12 Al Qaeda members had been sent to work for the NHS.

Eight people have so far been arrested in the hunt for the car bombers who tried to cause carnage in London and Glasgow. Six of them are NHS doctors.

The scale of the infiltration by the terror network has led police to believe several members of the gang are still at large and the threat of an atrocity remains high.

Guantanamo prisoners and other foreigners got a step closer to regaining the right to challenge their detention in the U.S. courts in a bill approved in a U.S. Senate committee on Thursday.

The Judiciary Committee voted 11-8 to send the proposal to the full Senate for debate, with Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania the lone Republican joining the Democratic majority.

Congress last year revoked the rights of foreign terrorism suspects labeled "enemy combatants" to challenge their detention by the United States. The Bush administration said it was necessary to prevent them from attacking Americans if freed.

The move affected about 380 suspected al Qaeda and Taliban captives held at the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba. It could also affect 12 million legal residents of the United States who are not U.S. citizens, said the committee chairman, Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy (news, bio, voting record) of Vermont.

"I hope the Senate will reconsider the historic error in judgment," Leahy said.

Philippine troops defuse bus bomb after U.S. Embassy warning

The bomb — black powder stuffed in a pitcher with steel fragments for deadlier effect — was hidden in a backpack on a bus where it was hastily abandoned by two men late Sunday in southern Maguindanao's Talitay town, regional army spokesman Lt. Col. Julieto Ando said.

Panicking passengers grabbed the bag and hurled it outside the bus. Police and army experts later defused the bomb, which was attached to a timer and batteries but was not yet set to explode, Ando said.

A police investigation was under way to determine whether the foiled bombing was planned by al-Qaida-linked militants, or linked to lingering political wrangling following May 14 congressional and local elections, he said.

The volatile Maguindanao region, where Muslim guerrillas and political warlords hold sway, was hit by bombings and gun attacks because of intense political rivalries during the balloting.

"It's hard to pinpoint who left that bomb in the bus," Ando told The Associated Press by telephone.
