NY Times Manages to Get Through Talk Radio Item With Calling it 'Hate Radio'

A surprisingly fair piece on conservative talk radio from the New York Times that manages to get through an entire story without any mention of hate radio, Air America or quoting from the goons at FAIR or Media Matters. What happened to their playbook?

Amid all the pressures on the radio industry, news-talk stations see an opportunity — and his name is Barack Obama.

After eight years of playing defense for President Bush, the conservatives who dominate talk radio are back on offense.

Hours after Mr. Obama’s election, the country’s most popular radio host, Rush Limbaugh, was talking about the “rebirth of principled opposition.”

Sean Hannity, the second highest-rated host, quickly cast his afternoon show as the home of “conservatism in exile.”

It is a lively time to be behind the microphone. One television talker, Joe Scarborough, is starting a radio show. Another, Bill O’Reilly, is ending his.

Several of the supporting actors in this year’s Republican primary are showing interest in the medium, too. Fred Thompson, the “Law & Order” star turned presidential candidate, will begin hosting a two-hour show in March, as the syndicator Westwood One is expected to announce this week. Mr. Thompson’s show would take the place of Mr. O’Reilly’s.

Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and a Republican presidential candidate, had been in negotiations with Westwood One for Mr. O’Reilly’s time slot, according to two people with knowledge of the talks who spoke on the condition of anonymity because a deal was not struck.

I take issue with the notion that conservatives were "playing defense" for George W. Bush. Sure, on issues such as the war on terror and the Iraq invasion, radio hosts were pretty much unanimous in their defense. But many hosts, and Hannity comes to mind, were harshly critical on economic issues and consistently lamented the fact that the Bush administration wasn't on offense themselves against what they perceived as unfair treatment.

The story goes on to note several politicians will be starting up shows themselves, including Mike Huckabee, Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani, as well as Joe Scarborough, who's already appearing on WABC in New York. Frankly, I'm not sure any of them will succeed where those such as Hannity and Limbaugh already have, not to mention successful hosts such as Laura Ingraham, Tammy Bruce and Neal Boortz, who don't even merit any mention by the Times. Of those former pols, perhaps Scarborough has a shot at making it as he's been out of office and hasn't run for anything in some time. It seems as if the others are just looking for something to do until they run for office again. Based on his lackluster run for president, I'm not sure Fred Thompson has it in him to carry a daily show. He has filled in for Paul Harvey on those 15-minute spots and does have a folksy charm that may go over with some.

One thing we can be thankful for--the dreadful Bill O'Reilly radio show is now dead. O'Reilly just didn't translate on radio and his show, the few times I ever listened, came off more like an infomercial pushing product.

McCain's Cabinet Possibilities

Well, since the GOP is resigned to having John McCain as the standard bearer come November, it's never too early to begin speculating what his cabinet would look like.

We've already heard the rumblings about Tim Pawlenty as VP, and I have to admit that's not a bad selection. From a possibly winnable blue state, young, relatively conservative and apparently no baggage, though I'm sure the Democrats will rifle through his writings from as far back as third grade to find some dirt.

Maybe they'll pin the Minneapolis bridge collapse on him.

So now I see this item on possible members of a McCain cabinet, and like a few of the possibilities.

Of course, the names floated are white men, which is sure to anger certain people who've never had anything to be happy about, apparently.

At this early stage, the names and faces that would flesh out a McCain White House remain pure speculation. After all, McCain insists he hasn't started seriously thinking about a running mate yet. And there's still a general election to win against a yet-to-be-determined Democratic opponent. But political experts and analysts already are contemplating what a McCain Cabinet might look like.

Some common guesses include well-known McCain allies and even past rivals in key positions:

• Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., in a prominent job, possibly even secretary of state.

• Former Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., as attorney general.

• Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani as homeland security secretary.

• Former Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas as treasury secretary.

• Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee as health and human services secretary.

For his part, McCain last week said he'd be looking for Cabinet members who "just share my conservative philosophy and views: less government, less regulation, lower taxes." But he also volunteered that conservationism would be a priority, saying he would hope "to preserve the great natural treasures of the West and our state and do whatever we can to protect our environment."

"I return to kind of the Teddy Roosevelt outlook toward things," McCain said.

Lieberman as secretary of state is intriguing. It's safe to say he'd be more a friend of Israel than his predecessor, which is comforting.

Fred Thompson as AG and Rudy Giuliani as DHS are certainly choices I could live with as well.

As for Huckabee, he may have a chance if he gives up on his impossible bid for the nomination.

One thing I have a major problem with, however, is the idea of closing down Guantanamo Bay. That's opening up a huge can of worms a President McCain can live without. Still needing to bring conservatives back into the fold, such an idea will not go over well in the least.

Well it is official now. Fred Thompson has announced he is dropping out of the presidential race. He was the only true conservative on the Republican side in my opinion. So now the Republican field continues to dwindle voters are now faced with selecting the lesser of about 4 evils on the Republican side .

Fred gets a nod from columnist at the Jewish World Review

While Ann Coulter is jumping on the Mitt bandwagon, Alicia Colon, a columnist with the New York Sun published an article in support of Fred Thompson in the Jewish World Review. Via the American Thinker blog.

There probably has never been a clearer choice between the two major political parties. Democrats are pro-choice; for gay marriage; a repeal of the tax cuts; bigger government and want a withdrawal from Iraq. The Republican candidates other than Ron Paul on Iraq are adamantly opposed to all these positions. Yet according to Dick Morris, the Republican Party is fractured into three factions. The social conservatives are for Huckabee; the economic conservatives are for Romney and the national security crowd is for Giuliani. Oddly enough, Fred Thompson meets the criteria of all three blocs and sooner or later it's going to dawn on all these Republicans that they like Fred, too.

Ms Colon touches on a lot of the reasons why people like Fred, and why he gets ignored by the mass market media. Of course it could also be because when Fred answers a question, the media with their short attention spans, and eager pursuit of soundbites, just can't comprehend Fred's answers. Their brain cells damaged by too much indoctrination at Liberal U and programmed to have all of life's problems solved in the time it takes to watch a sitcom, simply can't handle mature, reasoned, and well thought out responses.
This may also account for the serious lack of coverage they give as evidenced by this report of media coverage from last week.

Cold War Warrior for Fred

First off let me start off by saying I am going to draw some comparsions between Fred Thompson and Ronald Reagan, so if you are tired of reading about Reagan being tied to Fred stop reading. For those that wish to continue on this exercise, let me start by saying what has prompted me to write this piece.
Day after day I continue to hear how John McCain has the military vote wrapped up by the pundits, as if there is no reason to even campaign among the military or the veterans because of that reason. Well that is just BULL!
Reagan had no real military creditianals other then making some movies during WWII as part of the War Departments efforts. True he wore the uniform, but so did John Kerry.
My period of service covered the Cold War, you know that period of peace and prosperity when nobody was shooting at us except for the Soviets, and little vacations to places like Grenada, Panama, Haiti, and oh yeah that little dust up in the desert known as the Gulf War.
When I entered the Army the All Volunteer Force was in it's infancy. In fact I was a member of the first battalion sized element to officially be classified as All Volunteer in 1977.
At that time in our history I saw our embassy in Iran get overrun and our citizens held hostage. Along came a no nonsense talking man from California and within hours of him taking office our hostages were free. Trust me, those were anxious times in the ranks. We were hoping this man was not writing checks our little butts couldn't cash. But when it happened and he turned around and affirmed to us that he had complete confidence in us guess what? We begin to feel better about ourselves and our abilities too. You have to understand that this was a Army that had been savaged by it's country and was viewed as nothing more then a place of last resort for drug addicts, alcoholics and all the other dredges of society.
Suddenly we were getting money and equipment.
And then there was that 'Miracle on Ice". Those magnificent hockey players from the US who took on the worlds other super power and beat them. Suddenly we felt like we could too. I don't think those guys, to this day, realize what an impact they had.
We no longer held our heads down while walking the streets of Europe. We were cocky and we weren't worried about being accepted in the eyes of the world, like so many liberals today seem to think is the most important thing.
But all of this was brought about because we had a president who didn't apologize for being the biggest and baddest guy in the room. He wasn't looking for acceptance, just respect. When I first joined the Army respect was in short supply. After just a few short years of Reagan that was all we had.
Sure the Cold War would continue until the end of the eighties and there were times once again when I hoped he wasn't writing checks we couldn't cash, but by that time he had overdraft protection. We used to have saying back then, "I would walk through hell in gasoline soaked underwear for that man." And it was true.
Fred can be the same kind of president. At a time when everybody seems to be crying about the "moral high ground" and our image in the world Fred is stepping forth and admitting we have problems but they are American problems and we can solve them without outside intervention. He knows that the best way to imporve your image is to walk straight, talk straight and let everybody know when you say something you mean it. There is no parsing, no looking to find out what is "is.
People rap him for not being eloquent when talking, but I don't think Gen Schwarzkopf was very eloquent when he met with Saddam in that tent in the desert after destroying his army in 100 hours either. I would rather have a leader who is blunt, who, when the media tries to tell us what it was he said, can look right back at them and say you need to read what I said. There ain't nothing else hidden there.
So while there are candidates out there like Mr McCain who have military service I want everybody to know that in no way protects him from criticism. If his policies, like his stance on immigration, are wrong tell him. Most of America did and while he says he gets it now I don't trust him based on his answers at other times in the campaign. He thinks global warming is a certainty, while in the 70's the big scare was global cooling. Once again if you don't buy into the global warming hysteria let him know about it.
This is one Cold War Warrior who is behind Fred and I am imporing others, not just military, but all of us who lived in those times and through that period of our history, to support Fred. He is not about trying to recapture some nebolous lost era of the 80's, unlike the Democrats who have embraced the nostaglia of the 60's, but rather somebody who wishes to keep the conservative values alive and put them to use to solve the problems of the 21st century.
To quote another recently retired general, "Don't get stuck on stupid!"

Fred Thompson continues on the offensive

Fred is finally getting some face time on the cable TV news shows. Here he is on Fox, which lately has been all McCain and Huckabee lately, with Bill Hemmer. He continues pointing out the fact that the Huckster is all fluff and no substance, like cotton candy and now he is turning up the heat on McCain a little. The last thing any Republican candidate wants right now is to wind up in Fred's crosshairs and have one of his laser guided soliloquy's headed their way.

Democrats continue to meltdown (and oh yeah, Fred)

Goodbye DU - after 7 years, 12,366 Posts.

And here is the reason, after a long winded swan song. Oh for those that don't know, DU stands for Democratic Underground and it is the center of the liberal universe when it comes to all things related to conspiracy theories, BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome), and talking points for their elected folks.

If you read it on DU today some Democrat will say it on the floor of the House or Senate tomorrow. I purposely didn't link to them, okay I did a little bit just to prove I wasn't lying, because I don't want to give them the traffic. Notice even in this guy's goodbye, he mentions reserving his venom for Republicans.

DU has embraced Cindy Sheehan and then thrown her under the wheels of the bus when she announced she was going to run against Nancy Pelosi.

They tried to prove that the Twin Towers came down from demolition by setting a rabbit cage on fire on top of a brick. True, don't make me look up the link, I just ask you to trust me on this.

Okay, for the skeptics here it is.

So basically to the Obama attack dogs, you've ruined DU. And I find it soooo ironic that he has a lovely message of "hope and unity" and his supporters here aggressively attack people in their own party who do not agree with them. You're making everyone more aggressive and jerkish, including me. I used to pride myself on having positive posts, and reserving my venom for the republicans. You bring out the worst in me as I fight to defend HRC and Edwards.

So DU loses another, lets all observe a moment of silence. Okay, long enough.

So why do they continue to support Democrat candidates?

It is an old poll from September, but still stands up IMHO.

Former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson led among candidates when UPI-Zogby International poll respondents were asked who could bring stability to Iraq.

Suprisingly Obama came in 3rd on this question.

Thompson -- at 14 percent -- led among independents with Giuliani (10.5 percent) and Obama (8.1 percent) the only other candidates to get more than 6.3 percent support from that poll subset. Still, among independents, "not sure" came out on top at 24.8 percent.
There is a 1.2 percentage-point margin of error in the poll, which was conducted Sept. 7-10.

The most trusted national TV news organizations, for accurate reporting, in declining order included: Fox News (27.0%), CNN (14.6%), and NBC News (10.90%). These were followed by ABC News (7.0%), local news (6.9%), CBS News (6.8%) MSNBC (4.0%), PBS News (3.0%), CNBC (0.6%) and CBN (0.5%).

FoX news come out almost 2 to 1 over the next closet CNN. You can find MSNBC just barely showing up.

Fred in SC and Dems endorse the Huckster

Do you remember DOG (acronym for Detroiters Out to Get John Engler), the small but noisy group of Detroit Democrats who supported John McCain in the 2000 Michigan Republican presidential primary?

Probably not. But if you do, it will come as no surprise that DOG's ringleader, the irrepressible former state Rep. LaMar Lemmons III, D-Detroit, is behind a new group for the 2008 presidential cycle: Democrats for Huckabee.

There endorsement of Republican candidates in the past has been the kiss of death. Let's hope it continues to hold true. As if you needed anymore reasons to NOT vote for this guy.

Also they always talk about the military going for John "Amnesty" McCain. There may be a segment of older veterans who like him but among those of us not so long in the tooth Fred is our man.

Watching the videos on Pajamas Media where they interviewed Rudy, Fred, and John on terrorism. One question posed to Rudy was how to deal with the State Department. He said the first thing is to make it clear to the state department that their role is to make the United States more popular. Yup that's the role alright Rudy. Not to enforce the presidents foreign policy objectives but to make us popular. How about this. We just fire the state department and hire a PR firm.
Fred shows a good understanding of the threat and how to deal with. You negotiate from a position of strength.

Fred Thompson speech on Sept. 16, 2001

This is a speech Fred gave five days after the attack on Sep 11th. This is why he should be the next president.

It sounds like folks have put so much distance between the events of that day in their minds that an open border candidate like McCain can rise to the lead in polls in New Hampshire. New Hampshire, a state which lost many people on that fateful day seems to have blocked out the horrible events of that day.

I don't hold out much hope for Fred in NH, although I do hope for a good showing. I am making an appeal to those voters in South Carolina, those who remember a time when the slogan down south and visible on more then one license plate was "Hell no, I won't forget".

Out of this crop of slick talking, expensively-dressed politicians, Fred continues to be plain spoken, speaking the truth, even to those who don't want to hear it. So here it is. Fred five days after the destruction of the World Trade Center.

Can you handle Fred as your President?

I finally got around to watching Fred Thompson's 17 minute video he made for the folks in Iowa. In watching it I more and more believe that the man is not just a stuffed shirt. When he talks about being a leader he talks about what it really means to be a leader. Most politicians I classify as managers. There is a big difference and I have a little bit of experience at being both.
The questions for Republicans and conservatives is can you really handle a conservative leader like Fred? Look inside yourself. Do you really want somebody who will do the tough things required? Or do you just want somebody who can make you feel good and not interrupt your life? Everybody has their own personal list of what they want the president to address. But how many candidates have stood up and actually said they are looking out for the best interest of the country and not whatever special interest group they happen to be addressing at the moment?
I think Fred is that man. You need to give this video a view and watch it and listen, really listen. At the end if you don't think he is a conservative and you still consider yourself a Republican maybe you need to reevaluate who you consider to be a RINO (Republican In Name Only). Are you looking at the candidates based merely on the "electability" factor or are you willing to vote for someone who will attempt to restore the conservative principles that Republicans used to stand for?
This isn't American Idol. The mere fact that he is having trouble gaining traction in the polls is a combination of several factors, but he isn't one to make excuses. He hasn't changed what he says in this video from what he was saying 3 months ago.
I think at the end of the day it is going to boil down to what does the average American, of whatever political persuasion, is willing to do to keep America the greatest country on the face of the earth. We have a very small minority of the population, those who wear the uniform of this country and are facing head on the specter of the Islamic extremist, and winning, who know what they are willing to sacrifice to make that happen. If the only thing you are concerned about is your 9 to 5 existence and life continuing just as it is then Fred isn't your man. This country was formed, founded, and thrust into it's position of international prominence by men and women who were willing to challenge the unknown. To explore brave new frontiers, whether it was getting on a ship and coming to the new world, pushing westward in the great unknown expanses of this country or "slipping the surly bonds of earth" to explore space.
The issues facing us today internally are those of Social Security, Illegal Immigration, Tax Reform, and Health Insurance, (not healthcare).
The external issues to deal with are the spread of Islamic extremism. To get better informed read some news stories from Europe where their attempts to pander to the radical Muslim community has simply resulted in dead citizens and continued threats of violence against any who would dare question the religious zealots. National security can not and must not begin at our borders. I believe in accommodating the Muslim religion in my country when the Middle Eastern countries allow other religions in their midst. If you didn't know that it is illegal to bring a Bible into Saudi Arabia or that the death penalty awaits any who try to build a new church in the Muslim world then you need to become more aware of what it is these countries, who never miss a chance to condemn and criticize us for alleged Islamic hostility, are all about.
Fred addresses all of these issues and admits that the solutions are not simple, but require everybody working together. If all you are concerned about is whether or not the guy who stands up for America is electable, based on pronouncements from the media and the pundits, then continue watching American Idol and texting in your vote every week but for goodness sake don't participate in our national elections.
So are you going to vote for the guy with the good hair or vote for somebody who can keep this country on it's path of moving forward, being a leader in the world. If you wish to stay in your group mentality and go along with the crowd, not stand out, avoid any kind of attention and just remain a nameless, faceless, dweller of the international prairie dog village, that silently passes from the scene and 2 weeks later folks are asking the question, whatever happened to..., then vote for the guy or girl with the best soundbites or the one you think can win because that is what the voices on the flickering idiot box in your living room told you would win, then Fred isn't your man. If Appalachian State had listened to all those voices they never would have beaten Michigan State in the first game of the college football season this year. If our soldiers in the field had listened to all the expert armchair quarterbacks, instead of the one leading them we couldn't have turned Iraq around.
So listen to the pundits or listen to person who can lead you. The choice is yours. Choose wisely.

UPDATED: It appears I have a confirmation of my thoughts concerning Fred from the very person who asked the Do you have the fire in your belly question. Fred is the man to be president.

I feel more and more that Fred is the true conservative in this campaign next to Duncan Hunter, but alas Duncan couldn't get a mention in the press if he was seen on the arm of Paris Hilton. Fred is getting traction and he is serious.
I know most conservatives have soured on contributing to the RNC (Republican National Committee) since they have seemed to start backing candidates that do not seem to speak for what used to be considered conservatives. Well here is a chance to take that money and put it to good use. Give to Fred. It seems the media only responds to those who can raise money, why else would Ron Paul get an hour on Sunday talk show?
Go Fred.

And of course it comes from Fred. Without a word he conveys a message of hope and recognizes those that deliver it around the world. Thanks Fred.

Much of the speech was the political equivalent of chum. On national security: "The best way out of the fight is to be stronger than your adversary." On the Democrats: "the left-wing, big government, high taxing, weak-on-national security Democratic party." On his Republican opponents: "You're not electing a set of plans, you're electing a leader."

He is right. If you are looking for a manager vote for somebody else. Fred reminds me of the guy in the commercial standing in front of a bunch of coworkers, all involved in a project and as he goes around the table he asks each one things like "Can you continue to NOT live up to your resume? and Can you crumble under pressure? or Will you continue to waffle?
Leadership is what is needed. Not somebody who isn't a park of the pack, but somebody who can lead the pack. Too many politicians on both sides seem to want to stay in the pack but it takes courage and a certain amount of attitude to be the leader.

The best line from an Iowan.

"You can't trust what you get from the media," Scott said, as I furiously took notes. "So we researched it."

Maybe, just maybe there is still hope.

Fred and Duncan on the campaign trail

Not that too many in the Mass Market Media have actually noticed. It really is starting to be a presidential campaign more about who the media elite want to be president then it is who is actually running. I think the media, so enamored with celebrities, wants to have a president who is more celebrity then substance, after all it works out so well for the Hollywood crowd. Still doesn't explain why they give short shift to Fred. I thought he was one of them, well except for that conservative thing I mean.

Is Duncan Hunter the MSM biggest nightmare?

Duncan Hunter, a candidate for president on the Republican ticket, is probably the one person who best embodies the conservative values championed by Ronald Reagan, but why haven't you heard of him? My theory is just like how the Mass Market Media covers scandals involving Dems by burying the party affiliation, they are also running a campaign of silence in regards to Mr Hunter and instead promoting the candidate they feel whoever the Dems nominate can beat. If the liberals and media did not feel so threatened by this man why don't they at least give him as much attention as they do the other so called second tier candidates? Alan Keyes got more coverage from the recent debate in Iowa then Hunter did.
In my mind the only two true candidates worthy of consideration in the Republican race are Duncan Hunter and Fred Thompson. Neither have the money, and while one manages to get an Honorable Mention every once in awhile in the news, the other is more stealthy then our military in Iraq who have also disappeared.
So Duncan has made an appeal to the blogosphere and I am glad to assist.

I am getting exicited about Fred now

This is a good commercial from the Fred camp, now he needs to follow it up with more appearances and keep driving those points home. The other candidates have been getting eliminated from my Christmas list one by one based on their actions.

Huckabee - Too slick and conjuring up images of Clinton. His record on taxes and support for tuition for illegal aliens while governor turned me off.

Guilani - Too much gun control, too much mayor of NYC and not enough of what are you going to do for the country. Saying you did something while mayor does not mean you will do it as president, but if I look at everything you did as mayor then I have to cross him off.

Romney - I can't get past his mandatory health insurance plan he forced upon the residents of MA and now with Fred pointing out his obvious pandering to the Pro Life/Pro Choice crowd depending on the circumstances got him crossed off
None of the others ever really made it onto my radar screen with the exception of Duncan Hunter, whom I still know little about other then Ann Coulter likes him.

Rasmussen: Rudy 46, Pantsuit 42

She looks thrilled.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) enjoying a modest four-point lead of 46% to 42% over Senator Hillary Clinton (D). That’s the second time in the last three Rasmussen Reports election polls that Giuliani has held the advantage over Clinton.

The survey also found Clinton with a very slight edge over former Senator Fred Thompson (R), 46% to 44%. Both Republicans are doing better against Clinton than they did in the previous Rasmussen Reports survey.

Senator Clinton trailed Giuliani by a couple points in the previous Rasmussen Reports election poll of this race. However, she enjoyed modest leads, similar to the current results in our October 9 election poll (see history).

So in six weeks, she's gone from a six-point edge over Giuliani to a four-point deficit. At the same time, she had a 15-point edge over Thompson that has now disappeared.

A very welcome trend.
