NY Times Manages to Get Through Talk Radio Item With Calling it 'Hate Radio'

A surprisingly fair piece on conservative talk radio from the New York Times that manages to get through an entire story without any mention of hate radio, Air America or quoting from the goons at FAIR or Media Matters. What happened to their playbook?

Amid all the pressures on the radio industry, news-talk stations see an opportunity — and his name is Barack Obama.

After eight years of playing defense for President Bush, the conservatives who dominate talk radio are back on offense.

Hours after Mr. Obama’s election, the country’s most popular radio host, Rush Limbaugh, was talking about the “rebirth of principled opposition.”

Sean Hannity, the second highest-rated host, quickly cast his afternoon show as the home of “conservatism in exile.”

It is a lively time to be behind the microphone. One television talker, Joe Scarborough, is starting a radio show. Another, Bill O’Reilly, is ending his.

Several of the supporting actors in this year’s Republican primary are showing interest in the medium, too. Fred Thompson, the “Law & Order” star turned presidential candidate, will begin hosting a two-hour show in March, as the syndicator Westwood One is expected to announce this week. Mr. Thompson’s show would take the place of Mr. O’Reilly’s.

Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and a Republican presidential candidate, had been in negotiations with Westwood One for Mr. O’Reilly’s time slot, according to two people with knowledge of the talks who spoke on the condition of anonymity because a deal was not struck.

I take issue with the notion that conservatives were "playing defense" for George W. Bush. Sure, on issues such as the war on terror and the Iraq invasion, radio hosts were pretty much unanimous in their defense. But many hosts, and Hannity comes to mind, were harshly critical on economic issues and consistently lamented the fact that the Bush administration wasn't on offense themselves against what they perceived as unfair treatment.

The story goes on to note several politicians will be starting up shows themselves, including Mike Huckabee, Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani, as well as Joe Scarborough, who's already appearing on WABC in New York. Frankly, I'm not sure any of them will succeed where those such as Hannity and Limbaugh already have, not to mention successful hosts such as Laura Ingraham, Tammy Bruce and Neal Boortz, who don't even merit any mention by the Times. Of those former pols, perhaps Scarborough has a shot at making it as he's been out of office and hasn't run for anything in some time. It seems as if the others are just looking for something to do until they run for office again. Based on his lackluster run for president, I'm not sure Fred Thompson has it in him to carry a daily show. He has filled in for Paul Harvey on those 15-minute spots and does have a folksy charm that may go over with some.

One thing we can be thankful for--the dreadful Bill O'Reilly radio show is now dead. O'Reilly just didn't translate on radio and his show, the few times I ever listened, came off more like an infomercial pushing product.

Memo to FNC: Here's Who Should Replace Hannity & Colmes

Word is Sean Hannity will be going it alone once Alan Colmes leaves. Frankly at this point I'm tired of Hannity and would much prefer one of the above.

We report, now you decide which of these two should have her own show. Or maybe the two of them can co-host, wearing lingerie.

Sexist? Nah. I'm just looking out for their own best inetrests, and hot babes equals ratings.

FOX News Channel's (FNC) Alan Colmes will relinquish his role as co-host of Hannity & Colmes at the end of the year.

In announcing his decision, Colmes said, "I approached Bill Shine (FNC's Senior Vice President of Programming) earlier this year about wanting to move on after 12 years to develop new and challenging ways to contribute to the growth of the network. Although it's bittersweet to leave one of the longest marriages on cable news, I'm proud that both Sean (Hannity) and I remained unharmed after sitting side by side, night after night for so many years."

Colmes will continue to have a presence on FNC as he will serve as a liberal commentator on a variety of FOX News programming, including Foxnews.com's The Strategy Room and continue hosting his radio program, The Alan Colmes Show on FOX Talk, a division of FOX News Radio. He will also begin developing a weekend program.

'The Only Network With More Letters In Its Name Than Viewers'

How bad is it when even the left is tuning out MSNBC?

The cable news channel is "completely out of control," said writer-producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat.

She added that she would prefer a lunch date with right-leaning Fox News star Sean Hannity over left-leaning MSNBC star Keith Olbermann.

Olbermann was criticized by many who attended Monday's luncheon sponsored by the Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event was dubbed "Hollywood, America and Election '08."

Bloodworth-Thomason and others seemed especially critical of the way MSNBC -- and other media -- has attacked Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin while demeaning her supporters.

"We should stop the demonizing," she said, adding that Democrats have been worse than Republicans as far as personal attacks on candidates are concerned. "It diminishes us," she said of her fellow Democrats.

Bloodworth-Thomason even suggested a defense of Palin and her supporters should be written into TV programming, just as she went out of her way to portray Southern women as smart in her hit TV show "Designing Women."

Attendee Michael Reagan, the radio talk-show host and son of President Ronald Reagan, said he no longer will appear as a guest on MSNBC because "I actually get death threats."

"I'll stop sending them," joked Larry Gelbart, the writer, producer and director best known for the "M*A*S*H" television series and such movie screenplays as "Tootsie" and "Oh, God!"

Pollster Frank Luntz, a regular guest on the Fox News, joked that MSNBC is "the only network with more letters in its name than viewers."

Kos Kook: Hannity Is Afraid to Debate Me

These people take themselves so seriously. As if a national radio broadcaster is going to open his microphone to some unhinged weirdo full of bluster.

Over the past few weeks, John McCain's chief surrogate Sean Handy Hannity has been relentlessly, unfairly, and untruthfully attacking Barack Obama daily and has extended his smears to Michelle. Yet John McCain continues to embrace this wingnut who caters to vile bigots like Ann Coulter, Jesse Lee Peterson, and Jerome Corsi.

Last week, in Berea, Ohio, Obama called Hannity out and suggested that a 68 year old man named Mr. Burgess would tear him up in a debate. So Hannity put the man on his show for 15 minutes and Mr. Burgess, nice as he was, was unprepared for the litany of smears.

Hannity demands that Obama debate him for 3 hours. By bringing up Hannity, Obama either astutely realizes the DFQ theory that making Hannity the face of conservatism leads to permanent Democratic majorities or Obama made a tactical error by suggesting that someone else debate Hannity.

Regardless, Hannity does not get this talking point.

It gets funnier.

Memo to the Kos Kooks: There's this little thing on your radio known as a dial. If you don't like to listen to "smears" then change the station.

Sneaky Backdoor FCC Rule Could Imperil Talk Radio

I hope the folks out there who enjoy talk radio, and hopefully the hosts themselves are aware of this.

They better be. You know the Democrats want to silence debate and would love nothing more than to reimpose the absurd Fairness Doctrine. Knowing that's pretty difficult, they'll certainly be happy to leave it up to the anti-American, terror-supporting scum like CAIR to do their dirty work.

English First warned fans of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Dr. James Dobson and other syndicated talk shows that a proposed FCC regulation would drive their favorite programs off the air.

On January 24, 2008, the FCC published a "Notice of Proposed Rulemaking" in the Federal Register which, if ultimately adopted, would impose a back-door version of the discredited "Fairness Doctrine" upon America's airwaves.

The FCC's proposed regulations claim that radio station "programming -- particularly network programming - often is not sufficiently culturally diverse" and that the FCC seeks "to ensure that broadcasters serve their communities, especially traditionally underserved audiences," such as non-English speakers, whether or not these people actually exist.

Wonderful.

These advisory boards "should include representatives of all segments of the community," a requirement which would empower self-appointed "community leaders," such as representatives of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) or the Center for American Islamic Relations (CAIR), to discourage commercial radio stations from airing discussions of controversial matters such as the costs of illegal immigration or the meaning of jihad.

English First has established a web site, http://www.keeprushontheair.com, containing the relevant FCC documents and a citizen's petition to the FCC. The deadline for FCC reply comments is June 11, 2008.

For all of you so called Republicans you need to go look at what you consider to be Republican values, which I thought were fiscal responsibility, small federal government and personal responsibility, and if those are not the attributes you are looking for in a Republican candidate then you need to go ahead and publicly declare your support of the Democrat candidates.

Quit your Republican association like some sort of Halloween mask like so many of those running for the nomination are.

Why Investigate When Media Matters Does It For Him?

Henry "Nostrilitus" Waxman denies that he and his taxpayer-funded henchpersons are monitoring Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin and Sean Hannity.

There are two possibilities at play.

One, he's come under such ridicule from all three of them, or two, he and his goons realize they have Hillary Clinton's frontgroup Media Matters to do the job for him.

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) on Wednesday denied that he is conducting or ever planned to conduct a congressional investigation of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Mark Levin and called on a conservative magazine to retract its report that he asked investigators to compile information on the popular conservative talk radio hosts.

"The American Spectator report about a congressional investigation into talk radio is completely false," Waxman, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said in a statement to Cybercast News Service. "There is no investigation."

Waxman was referring to a report Monday that he "has asked his investigative staff to begin compiling reports on Limbaugh, and fellow radio hosts Sean Hannity and Mark Levin based on transcripts from their shows" to build a case for bringing back the Fairness Doctrine.

Naturally, I'm skeptical of anything coming out of Waxman's mouth since all he lives for is petty investigations of Republicans, and think it's likely some staffers flapped their gums a bit much and Waxman realized how stupid he looks.

Rush Derangement Syndrome Strikes Broward

If you needed any more evidence liberalism has become a mental disorder, look no further than to Florida, the epicenter of Rush Derangement Syndrome, and the absurd decision of the Broward County government.

Broward may cancel deal with radio station because it airs Rush Limbaugh

Rush Limbaugh has long been a thorn in the side of liberals, but now, because of him, some Democratic politicians don't even want to join with a local radio station to broadcast hurricane information.

Radio station WIOD, AM 610, has been the official channel for emergency information from Broward County government for the past year. The County Commission, all Democrats, balked at renewing the deal Tuesday, unable to stomach the station also being home to Limbaugh's talk show.

Commissioner Stacy Ritter said she did not want to support a station that's out of step with area politics. Ritter, a Democratic stalwart in the state Legislature before being elected to county office, cited talk shows hosted by Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and WIOD's partnership with Fox News.

"They have every right to speak, but we don't have to do business with them," she said.

Well, thank you, Ms. Ritter, for recognizing their right to speak, how very gracious.

So now people who may be used to finding out critical weather information on this station could have their lives endangered because of a bunch of petty, chilish liberals.

Forget public safety, they have an agenda, and hatred is all they know.

The deal with WIOD would ensure that news conferences are broadcast start to finish live from the county Emergency Operations Center in Plantation. Emergency managers became concerned during hurricanes in 2004 and 2005 that radio and television stations preempted their announcements in favor of news out of Miami.

Limbaugh, who lives in Palm Beach, could not be reached for comment. Ken Charles, WIOD's director of AM programming, said the station's talk show lineup has no relationship with its news coverage and that the county should focus on the benefits of teaming with the station.

"It's a shame that people would let politics get in the way of saving lives in a hurricane," Charles said.

Come to think of it, if someone gets killed, they can blame Rush this time instead of George W. Bush.

Ritter's concerns were echoed by Commissioners Ken Keechl, a former president of the Dolphins gay Democratic club, and Suzanne Gunzburger, who served on the vote-tallying board that recounted the 2000 presidential election.

An election these sniveling babies still haven't come to grips with.
