Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House Democrats have dropped the word stimulus from their vocabulary.
Though the House minority leader and her caucus are still pushing an economic stimulus agenda to save the economy, they’ve radically changed their rhetoric with the hope of winning over voters who saw “stimulus” as close to a dirty word.
Democrats are now being careful to frame their job-creation agenda in language excluding references to any stimulus, even though their favored policies for ending the deepest recession since the Great Depression are largely the same.
Indeed, with President Obama scheduled Thursday to lay out his job-creation plans before a joint session of Congress, liberal Democrats and left-leaning policy groups are pressuring him to ignore short-term deficit spending concerns in favor of sweeping spending initiatives designed to boost hiring.
The Democrats’ signature “Make it in America” platform aims to create jobs by increasing infrastructure spending, providing financial help to struggling states and expanding tax credits for businesses – all of which were key elements of their 2009 economic stimulus bill.
Recognizing the unpopularity of the 2009 package, however, Democratic leaders have revised their message with less loaded language – “job creation” instead of “stimulus;” “Make it in America” in lieu of “Recovery Act” – in hopes of tackling the jobs crisis.
And in hopes of bamboozling their supporters. It isn't working.
That’s a sharp shift from last year’s messaging strategy, when Pelosi issued hundreds of press releases touting the benefits of the 2009 stimulus bill in hopes of making believers of skeptical voters.
In the four months prior to last November’s elections alone, Pelosi’s office released more than 80 “fact sheets” highlighting media reports about local projects the stimulus law was supporting.
In December, that practice abruptly stopped, with good reason.
Not only had Democrats been trounced at the polls a month earlier, but public sentiment had made “stimulus” a radioactive word and “shovel-ready” a running national joke.
Indeed, Pelosi and Obama are now national jokes. Removing words from the language won't help redeem them.
That Speaker of the House gig really paid off well.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) saw her net worth rise 62 percent last year, cementing her status as one of the wealthiest members of Congress.
Pelosi was worth at least $35.2 million in the 2010 calendar year, according to a financial disclosure report released Wednesday. She reported a minimum of $43.4 million in assets and about $8.2 million in liabilities.
She's got hers, but can never get enough of yours.
For 2009, Pelosi reported a minimum net worth of $21.7 million.
Reports disclosing the assets and liabilities of lawmakers for the 2010 calendar year were released Wednesday. The forms can give a good estimate of lawmaker wealth, though they show ranges, and not precise values for stocks, pension plans, vacation homes and other assets.
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair Steve Israel have told Rep. Anthony Weiner he should resign.
Pelosi released the following statement Saturday:
“Congressman Weiner has the love of his family, the confidence of his constituents, and the recognition that he needs help. I urge Congressman Weiner to seek that help without the pressures of being a Member of Congress.”
Wasserman Schultz released the following statement:
"It is with great disappointment that I call on Representative Anthony Weiner to resign. The behavior he has exhibited is indefensible and Representative Weiner's continued service in Congress is untenable. This sordid affair has become an unacceptable distraction for Representative Weiner, his family, his constituents and the House – and for the good of all, he should step aside and address those things that should be most important – his and his family's well-being."
Delaware police are looking to confirm that Rep. Anthony Weiner didn't send any inappropriate direct messages to a 17-year-old high school girl on a social networking site.
The girl's mother says her daughter, whose name is being withheld because she is a minor, told her that none of the messages she received from Weiner were inappropriate. The girl's family brought her laptop and cellphone to the police station Friday evening, police sources told FoxNews.com.
"The Tweets in question between the student in question and the congressman were not salacious or in any manner inappropriate, said Daniel McElhatton, the attorney representing the girl's family. "No photographs were ever sent to her or from her."
Weiner spokeswoman Risa Heller also said that Weiner's interactions with the girl "were neither explicit nor indecent."
The police are trying to verify that, McElhatton said.
The Democrats always seem to have handy excuses for the consistently lousy economic data that keeps pouring in month after month. Rest assured, it never has anything to do with their audaciously reckless spending or drop-dead idiotic policies.
SCHIEFFER: You know, the unemployment figures came out, and they were worse than expected, as you know. Unemployment actually ticked up to 9.1%, but this was just part of the story. A series of numbers that have been really, really bad lately. The number of new jobs created - 54,000 - far fewer than expected. Home prices hit a new low in the first quarter of the year. Home sales are down again. Consumer confidence is down, and gas and food prices are up. I have to say, Congresswoman, many of the experts thought the recovery would be well underway by now. But it looks like we're going backwards now, that we may be on the verge of a double-dip recession here. Do you fear that's what's happened?
PELOSI: Well, I think we have to take a careful look at those figures to see. The unemployment numbers are obviously disturbing. Are they an anomaly as some people suggest because of the disasters in the south and the mid-west and the rest or is this something systemic that we have to accommodate in a different way? But, all of it translates into hardship for America's middle class and they are feeling it very, very severely.

Washington, (SANA)- Democratic Member of the US. House of Representatives and Chairman of the United States House Committee on Foreign Affaires Tom Lantos has underlined that Syria vehemently believes in the dialogue in its relations with the US and in dealing with the issues. In an interview on Tuesday, Lantos described the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi's recent visit to Damascus as important to open dialogue channels with it as saying: "The visit expressed in a marvelous way interests of the US, that led to embarrassment of the current US administration which has closed doors for dialogue with Syria." Lantos expressed desire to visit Damascus once more and that he will not comply with the policy of the US President George W. Bush regarding it.
Might go a long way to explaining the current occupant's of the White House reluctance to do anything in regards to Syria.
Of course candidate Obama professed that he would be willing to meet with the leader of Syria, along with other countries in the Axis of Evil, with no preconditions.

Just in case you thought she wasn't still in Washington, the worst House Speaker ever today reared her ugly head. While her president was busy humiliating himself on the world stage, the woman who helped oversee the permanent disappearance of millions of Americans jobs stepped up and wondered why the GOP hasn't magically created a gazillion jobs on their first month in the majority.
Democrats accused Republicans of wasting time and getting little done as the House began 10 hours of debate Thursday on a resolution intended to kill burdensome regulations.
"This is a make work product for Republicans who are without an agenda for job creation," Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said. "You have nothing else to offer."

Incoming Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said incoming Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is "known to cry."
"You know what? He is known to cry. He cries sometimes when we’re having a debate on bills. If I cry, it’s about the personal loss of a friend or something like that. But when it comes to politics — no, I don’t cry. I would never think of crying about any loss of an office, because that’s always a possibility, and if you’re professional, then you deal with it professionally," Pelosi (D-Calif.) told the New York Times magazine.
She noted: "I have deep emotions about the American people. If I were to cry for anything, I would cry for them and the policies that they’re about to face."
How clever.
Then she becomes delusional.
"I was the first woman speaker. It didn’t get that much play. And I’m not a publicity seeker, so it was OK with me. Boehner, before the election, they had him on the cover of Newsweek. Now he’s on the cover of Time, and women are coming to me and saying, 'Is the job less important when a woman holds it?'
She didn't get any attention? Huh? Heck, she even got the special airbrushing treatment from some magazines.
As to her claim she never cries over politics, how does she explain this performance?
Why would Nancy Pelosi lower herself to talk to Paul Ryan? She's a wealthy, left-coast elitist snob and he's just a lowly representative from flyover country. Heck, I'd wager she doesn't even know who he is.
Outgoing House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) is the GOP's primary source of contact within the Democratic leadership, a top Republican said Monday.
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), the incoming chairman of the House Budget Committee, suggested Republicans get along best with Hoyer, the second-ranking House Democrat who will stay in the No. 2 position in the next Congress.
"I get along pretty well with Steny. He's the only one we really talk to," Ryan said Monday morning on CNBC. "I don't know Nancy Pelosi. I had a 30-second conversation with her about six years ago, and that's about it." ... "She just doesn't talk; I've never talked to her," Ryan said of Pelosi. "I'm not casting aspersions — just, Steny talks to us."
You really have to wonder about the mindset of people who vote overwhelmingly for the most unpopular politician in America.
Soon-to-be-dethroned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may have been a favorite target of Republican candidates in the midterm elections Nov. 2 - by one count more than 400 of their ads featured her as the enemy - but voters in her famously liberal home turf of San Francisco still love her.
A look at election results in the city showed her with the highest support, percentagewise, of any candidate running for state or federal office. Pelosi, who is vying to become the House minority leader in the 112th Congress, claimed 79.97 percent support in her re-election bid.
That was a tad higher than incumbent U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, who secured 79.85 percent of San Francisco's vote, according to the latest election results.
Jerry Brown, in his bid for governor, grabbed 78.71 percent of the vote. Support dropped for Mayor Gavin Newsom. He secured 75.41 percent of the San Francisco vote in his race for lieutenant governor.
The upside? We'll still have Pelosi, Dingy Harry and Obama to focus on come 2012.

A leading Senate Democrat vowed Friday to introduce legislation killing a part of the new healthcare reform law that imposes new tax-filing requirements on small businesses.
Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), chairman of the Finance Committee and a leading architect of the reform law, said a provision requiring businesses to report more purchases to the IRS will impose undue paperwork burdens on companies amid an economic downturn when they can least afford it.
Baucus, who had pushed legislation scaling back the requirement earlier in the year, now wants it repealed in full.
“I have heard small businesses loud and clear and I am responding to their concerns," Baucus said in a statement. "Small businesses are the backbone of our economy in my home state of Montana and across the country, and they need to focus their efforts on creating good-paying jobs — not filing paperwork."
Since the midterm election, Democrats have signaled a willingness to change the provision.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Friday that the 1099 requirement is one of the rare provisions of the healthcare law where the two parties agree that a change is needed.
"That's probably the first place we could go together," she told NPR's "Morning Edition."
Last week, President Obama also conceded that the filing provision threatens to put too much strain on businesses.
"The 1099 provision in the healthcare bill appears to be too burdensome for small businesses," Obama said at a White House news conference the day after Democrats were trounced in midterm elections. "It just involves too much paperwork, too much filing. It's probably counterproductive."
Gee, ya think?

Let's put it delicately. Allen West's stay in Congress is going to be very lively if this woman is any indication.
A newly named GOP chief of staff called the outgoing Democratic majority — and in particular Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) — "garbage."
Joyce Kaufman, the incoming chief of staff to Rep.-elect Allen West (R-Fla.), said: "Over these months I have been blessed to form very wonderful relationships with the West family. I looked at this family and [told] myself, 'How do you not fight and put them up on the pedestal when we've got this garbage up on the pedestal now, people like Nancy Pelosi?' "
Kaufman, a conservative South Florida radio personality, made the comments on her show Tuesday.
Kaufman, who's hosted her own talk radio show since 2001, is no stranger to controversy. In 2007, she told her audience that illegal immigrants found committing crimes should be killed and then deported.
"If you commit a crime while you're here, we should hang you and send your body back to where you came from, and your family should pay for it," she said, according to the Miami New Times.
In the same year, she also canceled her contract with Comcast after she was asked to "press 1 for English" when calling the help line, the New Times reported.
Kaufman was an early backer of West and proved one of his staunchest supporters over the course of the campaign. During the campaign, West was a frequent guest on Kaufman's radio show.
That Miami New Times link reveals a very, um, interesting character, to say the least.
As vanquished Democrats plead with her to step aside gracefully, Nancy Pelosi not only is completely out of touch with the political reality, she's now so far gone she's planning to "celebrate" the accomplishments of the disastrous 111th Congress she led off the cliff.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will host a reception Wednesday afternoon on Capitol Hill to celebrate "The accomplishments of the 111th Congress," according to an invitation sent out Monday.
The event will offer congressional Democrats, many of whom will not be returning to Congress next January, an opportunity to reflect on the party's legislative victories over the past two years. These have included the passage of major healthcare reform, financial regulatory reform, and climate and energy legislation.
Not likely to be lost on attendees, however, is that the unpopularity of many of these "accomplishments" among voters went far to contribute to a wave of Democratic losses in last week's mid-term elections, in which Democrats lost control of the House and their majority in the Senate was weakened.
I hope it's televised. Seeing Pelosi hoisting a champagne toast to her magnificent accomplishments should be a special moment.
I think she'd be a great Minority Leader. She'll be so effective the Democrats may become the permanent minority. Definitely a great plan to put the most unpopular politician in the nation out front as the face of your party, folks.
Battle lines are emerging in the House Democratic Caucus over Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) possible bid to stay on as the minority leader.
Liberal Democrats are mobilizing in support of Pelosi remaining at the head of the party in the 112th Congress, while some centrists said she should step aside in the wake of the party's loss of around 60 House seats in Tuesday's election.
The growing fault line comes as Pelosi weighs the options in her political future. She has begun reaching out to members to gauge whether she enjoys enough support to stay as the Democratic leader.
"Democrats tend to be more kind to our leader when they have a loss," said Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), the longest-serving member of the House, on Detroit's WJR Radio. "She can run and probably get elected. I think she has a good chance of doing that."
She's got the devoted support from the lunatic wing of the party.
Outside liberal groups are already organizing support for Pelosi before she makes a decision. Americans United for Change launched an e-mail campaign on Friday encouraging supporters to "send a personal note to Speaker Pelosi about how much you appreciate her leadership," and to "make sure she knows that we still support her."
The liberal website Daily Kos started a similar online petition.
Meanwhile, sane Democrats seeking survival in 2012 are looking toward the center. Good luck with that, fellas.
Rep. Dan Boren (D-Okla.), a conservative Democrat and another longtime critic of Pelosi, said he "cannot in good conscience" support her as minority leader, and would support a more conservative Democrat instead.
Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) and Rep. Jim Matheson (D-Utah), the co-chairman of the Blue Dog Democrats, have also said that Pelosi should step aside, joining the other incumbent Democrats and candidates who had said they would oppose Pelosi as Speaker if Democrats had retained their majority status, during the closing weeks of the campaign.
