They fall silent as a man comes onstage - a makeshift wooden coffee table - to announce the main attraction: presidential candidate Ron Paul.I sense a momentum mere mortals can no longer control.
Jumping on the "stage," Paul asks the crowd, "Does anybody here love freedom?" and they go wild.
Though Paul usually refrains from talking about his contenders, he had some pointed words for fellow Republican candidate Rudy Giuliani in his speech on Friday. And usually, the answer is "Who the hell is Ron Paul?"
"We don't need somebody who used to be a mayor to be President of the United States," Paul said, to which the audience reacted with huge applause.
...
One of the most interesting aspects of Paul's campaign is his unique base of support.
Paul works to appeal to young people, emphasizing the effect current economic policies will have on their futures. Paul does well in internet polls despite trailing far behind other Republican candidates in other polls.
Alex Skozen, a CAS sophomore, said that while he has heard a lot about Paul, most of the information concerns his unorthodox stances.
"Every time people talk about him, it seems to start with 'Oh God, did you hear what Ron Paul said?' "
More today from a bemused Wasington Times.
Mr. Paul appears today at the National Press Club to discuss the state of his campaign finances. He has raised $8.3 million this year, according to numbers released Monday by the Federal Election Commission. And lots of bong hits and LSD.
But money alone is not driving the campaign. It's zeal and spunk, perhaps.
