A 20-year-old West Barnstable woman was charged with drunken driving Tuesday night after being involved in a crash that began when a man jumped in front of an oncoming vehicle, public safety officials said.
At about 9 p.m. Tuesday, Tara L. Tobin, 20, of 2239 Iyannough Road, was driving westbound on Route 28 when she crashed into the rear of a Dodge Dakota pickup truck that had stopped suddenly.
The driver of the Dodge stopped in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid hitting a 47-year-old Centerville man with emotional problems who purposely jumped in front of the vehicle, the police said. The 47-year-old was taken by Yarmouth rescue personnel to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment of injuries that were considered serious but not life-threatening, the police said.
The police charged Tobin with operating under the influence of alcohol and a minor traffic violation. She is scheduled to be arraigned in Barnstable District Court. Tobin told investigators that prior to the crash she had six or seven beers at a house in Dennis, the police said.
