Perfect Place For An Obama Fundraiser

No doubt his supporters will feel at home raising money here.
A Manhattan nightclub known for X-rated burlesque and drug raids is scheduled to host a fund-raiser for Barack Obama tonight.

The Box, a Lower East Side celebrity favorite, has invited Obama supporters to donate $50 to watch tonight's scheduled debate on the club's big-screen television.

Organizers also plan to conduct on-site voter registration.

In August 2007, a risqué late-night stage show was canceled after cops raided the Chrystie Street club and randomly searched some patrons for drugs.

The 1 a.m. raid forced the club to cancel its second show of the night, a revue featuring scantily clad showgirls, a gender-bending singer and a dancing dwarf.

An Obama spokesman, Blake Zeff, said the event is not affiliated with the campaign, and campaign officials know nothing about it.

Last week, Community Board 3 voted to strip The Box of its liquor license. Members said owner Simon Hammerstein misled them when he first applied, claiming he was opening a dinner theater, when The Box is actually a raunchy cabaret - one that features all sorts of wild sex acts on stage.
Of course, they claim to know nothing about it, but I'm sure they'll be happy to accept all the money raised.
