Helen Thomas said Thursday that she stands by her comments about Israel she made earlier this year that led to her resignation as a national columnist.

And she went further, saying that Zionists control U.S. foreign policy and other institutions. The local Jewish community condemned her remarks.

In an interview, Thomas, 90, said that criticizing Israel led to her resignation and ostracism in Washington.

"I can call a president of the United States anything in the book, but I can't touch Israel, which has Jewish-only roads in the West Bank," Thomas said. "No American would tolerate that -- white-only roads."

Thomas, a longtime White House correspondent who grew up in Detroit as the daughter of Lebanese immigrants, was in Dearborn for a workshop on anti-Arab bias.

In a speech to about 300 people inside a center in Dearborn, she talked about "the whole question of money involved in politics."

"Congress, the White House and Hollywood, Wall Street are owned by the Zionists. No question, in my opinion," she said. "They put their money where their mouth is. ... We're being pushed into a wrong direction in every way."

Jewish groups have called Thomas' earlier remarks unfair and bigoted. They slammed Thursday's remarks as well.

"Ms. Thomas repeated the anti-Semitic stereotypes that have been used for more than a century to incite hatred of Jews. Her comments should be condemned by all people who oppose bigotry," said Robert Cohen, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit.

'You Cannot Criticize Israel in This Country and Survive'

This anti-Semitic creep is still apparently drawing oxygen, so that disproves her absurd statement.

In a radio interview, former White House correspondent Helen Thomas acknowledges she touched a nerve with remarks about Israel that led to her retirement. But she says the comments were "exactly what I thought," even though she realized soon afterward that it was the end of her job.

"I hit the third rail. You cannot criticize Israel in this country and survive," Thomas told Ohio station WMRN-AM in a sometimes emotional 35-minute interview that aired Tuesday. It was recorded a week earlier by WMRN reporter Scott Spears at Thomas' Washington, D.C., condominium.

Thomas, 90, stepped down from her job as a columnist for Hearst News Service in June after a rabbi and independent filmmaker videotaped her outside the White House calling on Israelis to get "out of Palestine." She gave up her front row seat in the White House press room, where she had aimed often pointed questions at 10 presidents, going back to Eisenhower.

She has kept a low profile since then.

"(It was) very hard for the first two weeks. After that, I came out of my coma," Thomas said.

Can't tell from the looks of things.

Her latest statements are sure to win her some more awards from her anti-Semitic pals.

They Did It For the Children

Who's the genius who invited this anti-Semitic creep to speak to high schoolers in the first place? It's not as if too many of them would know who this relic from the Eisenhower administration is to begin with. On the upside, now the kiddies won't have to shield their eyes or run in horror.

Veteran journalist Helen Thomas, who recently made controversial comments about Israel and Palestine, agreed Sunday not to appear as commencement speaker at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda.

Alan Goodwin, principal of Whitman, where objections to the appearance had been raised, said he reached a niece of Thomas's earlier in the day. "We had a mutual understanding about her not coming," he said.

"Graduation celebrations are not the venue for divisiveness," Goodwin said in an e-mail to Whitman parents. "Graduation is the time for a cohesive and joyous celebration of our students' achievements," he wrote.

Not a place for divisiveness? Then why did they invite her to begin with? It's not as if she's been impartial any time the past five decades.

Thomas, 89, who has covered the White House for decades, provoked criticism by her response in an impromptu video interview that was posted online. In a brief comment, she said Israelis should "get the hell" out of Palestine and go to places including Poland, Germany and the United States.

In an interview, Whitman parent Raisa Slepoy said, "I don't know why anybody would ask a person like that to speak at a commencement ceremony . . . especially where there's a pretty large Jewish population."

If Thomas had appeared, Slepoy said, there would "be a lot of people booing her off the stage. . . . It would be an embarrassment."

Meanwhile, Thomas has been dumped by her PR agency. Former Clinton White House Counsel Lanny Davis unloaded on her.

“Helen Thomas, who I used to consider a close friend and who I used to respect, has showed herself to be an anti-Semitic bigot. This is not about her disagreement about her criticisms of Israel. She has a right to criticize Israel and that is not the same as being an anti-Semite,” Davis said in a statement.

Remember this little incident from about a year ago.

Fourteen members of a leadership group under former President Carter's think tank resigned Thursday over concerns that Carter's book on the Middle East does not represent "the Jimmy Carter we came to respect and support."

The members of the 200-member Board of Councilors, a leadership advisory group founded in 1987, join a longtime Carter aide, Jewish groups and lawmakers who have publicly criticized the former president's best-selling book "Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid" for inaccuracies and distorting history.

Carter has never been a friend of Israel and there is certainly a certain level of anti-semitism that taints his perspective.

Of course, traveling to the Middle East to negotiate with Hamas doesn't help either.

The resolution, sponsored by Reps. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., and Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., was intended as a warning shot at Carter and follows letters from more than 50 congressmen urging the former president to abandon his visit to the Hamas head, who lives in exile in Syria.

In the face of such criticism, Carter traveled to Cairo to meet with Mahmoud Zahar, who controls Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip. Zahar wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post Thursday decrying the "hideous straitjacket of apartheid" in Gaza and compared Israel to Nazi Germany.

I would also like to thank the goober farmer for once again furthering the stereotype of southerners as nothing but toothless, tobacco-spitting bigots. Everyone, it seems, but himself. Having a native of Georgia going around reassuring the slobbering masses who are pushing the theme that anyone who is opposed to the socialism of America are racists, and using the hook of how he is one of us so you can believe him, is despicable.

So tell me, Jimmy, how did you escape the bigotry of growing up in the south? Are you the only one who managed to escape the taint of racism? Why are charges of racism against those from the south any more credible then saying those same things about somebody from New England or the midwest?

My advice to Mr. Carter: Shut up. You have a golden opportunity to shed the title of Worst President Ever, unless that's something you are proud of.

In the last couple of days we have had a few of the elected elite class from Georgia running around throwing the racism tag around, and call me a conspiracy nut or whatever, but it is almost as if a memo went out asking for southern Democrats to push the racism theme. I eagerly await the soundbite from Cynthia McKinney. My representative, David Scott, used his racism card earlier when he got challenged at his health care town hall, which is why I guess it fell to Hank Johnson to play it this time.

Obama May Send Delegation to UN Hatefest After All

Nothing like having true convictions and sticking to your word. I figure Obama may as well attend himself. It's been awhile since he was listening to Jeremiah Wright and he may just be jonesing for some anti-Semitic bilge.

The United States on Tuesday held out the chance of attending a U.N. conference on racism in Geneva next week but said the final text must remove what Washington views as restrictions on freedom of speech.

State Department spokesman Robert Wood welcomed the toning down of "objectionable" language deemed hostile toward Israel but indicated more must be done before the United States would reverse a February decision to boycott the meeting.

"We commend those who have worked to effect these changes," said Wood of the draft document being negotiated in preparatory meetings. "There remain, however, elements of the current draft text that continue to pose significant concerns."

Israel and American Jewish groups have urged the United States not to take part in the conference. Canada and Italy have said they will not attend, and several other countries are considering their participation.

The United States found language in the draft related to "incitement" to religious hatred problematic because it suggested support for restrictions on freedom of expression, said Wood.

"We hope that these remaining concerns will be addressed, so that the United States can reengage the conference process with the hope of arriving at a conference document that we can support," Wood said, indicating the United States might still attend if changes were made to the document.

In addition, Wood said the conference must not reaffirm the "flawed" statement which emerged from the U.N.'s meeting on racism in 2001 in Durban, South Africa.

The United States and Israel walked out of the Durban meeting before it ended over a draft resolution that singled out Israel for criticism and likened Zionism to racism.

So all the conference organizers need to do is redact some of the overt anti-Semitism and Obama will be happy to have us attend.

Then while we're there all the unexpurgated will just come out in the open for all to hear and they'll proclaim "shock" and "sadness" over the events.

Meanwhile, it's interesting to note that a "reporter" from the Huffington Post gets to listen in on White House conference calls. Such a cozy relationship there.

'African' Youths Brutally Beat Jewish Teen in Paris

I'll go out on a limb and suggest these 'African' youths are practitioners of Islam.

Just a wild guess.

A 17-year-old French Jew was attacked on Saturday night in Paris, a violent assault condemned by President Nicolas Sarkozy and that Jewish organizations said was motivated by anti-Semitism.

The young man, identified as Rudy Haddad by one Jewish organization, was attacked by youths of African origin, according to a police source and a statement from the National Agency of Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism.

The agency cited the use of iron bars in the attack. Haddad is suffering from "serious neurological problems," a police source said.

Another Jewish group, the Union of French Jewish Students, said Haddad had been identified as Jewish because he was wearing a kippa (skull cap), and had suffered several broken ribs, a fractured skull and was now in intensive care at a hospital in central Paris.

"The victim was wearing a kippa and was on his way back home, when his attackers, after identifying him as Jewish, started to beat him," the union said.

The exact number of attackers was not immediately known, ranging from 6 or 7 up to 30, depending on sources. Haddad's father told French radio RTL there were around 15 attackers.

Though most Muslims reject Islamism and its propaganda, anti-Semitic messages from satellite channels like the Hamas-run Al-Aqsa are helping to bring a message of hate and intolerance to Europe. The effects of such hate preaching can already be felt in Germany.

Sowing the seeds of hate: The Hamas satellite station Al-Aqsa recently used a Mickey Mouse clone to teach Muslim children -- in Gaza and Europe -- to hate Jews.

"Sanabel, what do you want to do to help the Al-Aqsa Mosque?" Farfur asks on the children's program of Hamas's Al-Aqsa television station. "We want to fight." "And what else?" "Wipe out the Jews." Now Farfur, the cartoon character on Hamas's children's television program, is satisfied. Farfur is a carbon copy of Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse, but the Hamas version does something that Mickey would never do: He entertains children while propagating the murder of Jews.

Just like Old McDonald wouldn't entertain children by having Porky Pig attack Muslims.

International protests forced Hamas to take its Disney clone out of circulation. Al-Aqsa complied, but promptly turned Farfur's departure into an anti-Semitic statement: Farfur was clubbed to death by an Israeli official. Then the girl hosting the program turned to the camera and said: "You've seen how the Jews killed Farfur as a martyr. What do you want to say to the Jews?" A three-year-old girl named Shaima called into the show to say: "We don't like Jews, because they are dogs! We will fight them!" "Oh, Shaima, you're right," the girl in the studio replied, "the Jews are criminals and our enemies."Farfur's appearances are typical of Hamas's anti-Semitic propaganda, which the organization also exports to Germany via satellite, hoping to breed new generations of fanatical anti-Semites and suicide bombers.

Imagine the seething outrage if a TV program showed infidel kids interacting with, "We don't like Muslims, because they are dogs! We will fight them!" "Oh, Samantha, you're right," a girl in the studio replies, "the Muslims are criminals and our enemies."? The UN would go apeshit crazy in the mad rush to condemn the source.

The Hamas station, founded in 2006, is modeled on the Hezbollah station in neighboring Lebanon, al-Manar. Al-Manar's children's program shows children wearing explosive belts and images of dying Israeli soldiers, with triumphant chants as background music. Cartoons depict scenes like that of a child blowing himself up near Israeli soldiers, or of a smiling boy flying toward Israel on a missile. Adult viewers can enjoy video clips that use inspirational graphics and rousing music to glorify the act of committing a suicide bombing, while the evening lineup offers family entertainment with a series of films based on the classic anti-Semitic forgery "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion."

In late 2004, France banned the broadcasting of al-Manar through the European Eutelsat satellite system, citing the station's anti-Semitic content. Nevertheless, messages of hate were still being broadcast into the living rooms of Muslims in Germany via satellites controlled by Saudi Arabia and Egypt, ArabSat and NileSat. Exposure to this programming was apparently not without consequences.

Rabbi Zalman Gurevitch was wearing a traditional black robe when he left his synagogue in Frankfurt's Westend neighborhood on Sept. 7, 2007. It was the Sabbath. According to the police report, he encountered a 22-year-old German of Afghan descent "spontaneously and coincidentally" a short time later. It was early evening and the man, shouting "You shit Jew, I'm going to kill you," plunged a knife into the rabbi's abdomen. Gurevitch was recognizable as a Jew. He survived, thanks to luck and emergency surgery.

Although this attack was an isolated incident, it is hard to overlook how hatred imported from Beirut and Gaza resurfaces in the form of daily acts of anti-Semitism in schools and athletic clubs, on streets and in the subway. Young children raised to be anti-Semitic are already using the phrase "You Jew!" as a derogatory expression in kindergartens and on playgrounds. Schoolchildren berate their teachers, calling them Jew dogs, for not offering Sharia-compatible instruction, and Jewish schoolchildren are attacked and feel compelled to switch to Berlin's Jewish high school and to hide the insignia of their Jewish faith -- the yarmulke and the Star of David -- when in public.

Neo-Nazi sentiments were behind the majority of anti-Semitic incidents reported in 2006. At the same time, however, the number of anti-Semitic criminal offences committed by Muslims jumped from 33 to 88.

In 2007 the German Interior Ministry published a study on the worldviews of "Muslims in Germany," the most comprehensive of its kind to date, which confirmed this trend. According to the study, "anti-Semitic attitudes were found among young Muslims far more often than among non-Muslim immigrants or domestic non-Muslims." The study cited examples of Muslim students to illustrate that this anti-Semitism cannot be dismissed as the product of an underdog attitude within marginalized social groups, but instead represents an ideological way of thinking. "The pervasiveness of sweeping anti-Semitic prejudices among Muslim students was also noticeable," the study pointed out. "Such prejudices, expressed indirectly by slightly more than one-third and in extreme form by about 10 percent of students, are significantly more common than anti-Christian sentiments."

What is the source of this profound hatred, which stations like al-Aqsa and al-Manar are spreading and one in 10 of the Muslim students surveyed embraces? The Middle East conflict is often cited as a reason, but this is too simplistic. Hostility toward Jews has existed since Islam came into being. In its charter, Hamas quotes the Prophet Muhammad as saying: "The Day of Judgment will not come about until Muslims fight Jews and kill them. Then, the Jews will hide behind rocks and trees, and the rocks and trees will cry out: 'O Muslim, there is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him." Through the use of such language, the hatred of Jews is given a religious justification.

Nazi Germany entered the picture in the 20th century. The Nazis, hoping to use early Islamic hostility toward Jews for their own ends, paid substantial sums of money to support the Muslim Brotherhood's anti-Jewish campaigns in Egypt. And just as they had radicalized widespread Christian anti-Semitism in Europe, the Nazis did their utmost to radicalize the latent anti-Judaism that had originated in early Islam.

While everything Jewish was considered evil in early Islam, everything evil was now being labeled as Jewish, from wars and revolutions to the drug trade and the decline of moral values. Between 1938 and 1945, the Nazis' radio station broadcast its lies about a supposed Jewish world conspiracy into the Islamic world every evening. The professionally produced programs were broadcast in Arabic, Persian and Turkish, and were very popular. Thus, it comes as no surprise that the Hamas charter has also adopted this legacy.

The Jews, we read in Article 22, "stood behind the French Revolution, the Communist Revolution and most of the revolutions we hear about... They stood behind World War I ... There is no war going on anywhere without them having their finger in it."

Whether in the case of Muhammad or here, in both cases Hamas used sources to justify its hatred of the Jews that are older than Israel. But once someone has fallen for this demonizing delusion, he will find his anti-Jewish concept of the enemy confirmed in everything that an Israeli government does or fails to do. What is more, those who hold Jews responsible for all the world's ills will paint the Jewish state as the root of all evil. Following Hamas's example, they will celebrate or deny the Holocaust, even in Berlin.

Teachers in the German capital are sometimes confronted with Muslim students who expressly use the Holocaust to justify their sympathies for the Nazis ("I like Hitler; he did the right thing with the Jews"), refusing to take part in school trips to concentration camp memorials. During one excursion to the German Historical Museum, a group of Muslim youth gathered in front of a replica of a gas chamber in Auschwitz and applauded.

Can we blame Israel for the mindset that leads to such activities? Perhaps it would be more apt to conclude that the waves of hatred that the Nazis' shortwave radio transmitter once broadcast into the Arab world are now returning in the form of a delayed echo.

Top Aussie Liberal Calls Candidate 'Greedy F--king Jew'

ANOTHER senior Victorian Liberal has quit after being caught sending anti-Semitic emails as the crisis in the state opposition deepens.

Liberal campaign director Susan Chandler apologised for referring to a federal Liberal candidate as a “greedy f...ing jew” but has left her job at the party's Melbourne headquarters.

State president David Kemp said today she had the option of quitting or being sacked.

In an email to Liberal staffer John Osborn, Ms Chandler referred to candidate Adam Held as a “greedy f...ing Jew” after he asked for more campaign material during last year's federal election.

Ms Chandler released a statement this afternoon saying she had many Jewish friends and was not anti-Semitic.

“My comments were completely out of character and were made on the spur of the moment in an email during a difficult period of the election campaign,” she said.

Sure.

Major efforts at damage control are underway.

Late today Mr Baillieu issued a statement:

“The Liberal Party in Victoria, and across Australia, rejects any form of anti-semitism or racial vilification and will not tolerate either within its ranks.

“There is no place for any form of anti-semitism, racial or religious vilification within the Liberal Party, or anywhere.

“We have a proud record of support for the Jewish community.

“Anti-semitism is a disgraceful form of vilification and is repugnant to the values of the Liberal Party, and to myself.

Are You Ready for the Second World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance?

I had completely forgotten the original farce that took place back in early September 2001, as events that followed shortly thereafter obviously overshadowed the travesty that took place in Durban, South Africa.

Well, a second seethefest is on the horizon.

The U.N. 2001 anti-racism conference in Durban, South Africa, provoked a walkout by the United States and Israel, with both nations saying it had been overtaken by anti-Semitism and some in Congress claiming it had cemented the world body's shame in the eyes of America.

The mandate for a Durban II conference early next year now worries organizers and diplomats at the United Nations, who fear the event will be a reprise.

Canada plans to boycott the event, and the United States and Israel have one foot out the door. Even the 27-nation European Union, which made it through the last conference, said it is worried.

"We did contemplate not participating," said a French diplomat, whose country presides over the European Union the second half of this year.

"But we will go and fight for the agenda and the resolution that will be passed," said the diplomat, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak for attribution.

Concern stems not only from the 2001 event, which concluded days before the Sept. 11 attacks, but also because a Libyan diplomat now chairs the U.N. Human Rights Council, which will play a prominent role in the conference.

The most contentious deliberations by far were among the nongovernmental organizations (NGO), whose delegates met separately from diplomats to hammer out their own declarations.

The NGO document, which was never formally released by the United Nations, declared that Zionism equals racism and condemned Israel for committing a "holocaust" against its Palestinian neighbors.

Now just who is on the esteemed advisory panel?

The advisory panel includes Iran, Pakistan, Libya and Cuba.

No doubt the United States and Israel will get a fair hearing there.

We should have our heads examined if we even consider attending this charade a second time.

Jewish Students Flee Arab Mob at York University

The proponents of tolerance and diversity were unavailable for comment.

Jewish York students flee from mob

York University saw the worst antisemitic display ever on that campus last week, said Ben Feferman, senior campus coordinator for the Canadian region of Hasbara Fellowships, an Israel advocacy organization spearheaded by Aish Hatorah.

The Betar-supported Campus Coalition of Zionists (CCZ), together with Hasbarah, manned a table in Vari Hall, with permission from the university, with pamphlets and brochures about the danger emanating from Iran.

However, the situation became very difficult for the students who participated. They were vastly outnumbered by pro-Arab students who surrounded them, and eventually the pro-Israel activists fled. As they left, there was cheering by the pro-Arab mob.

According to Feferman, “I’ve never seen anything like this at York. We weren’t even discussing the issues anymore. It was pure Jew hatred. That’s what it’s come to.” In fact, Feferman noticed an acquaintance there and said hello, but received no acknowledgement. She emailed him later that day to apologize, explaining that she didn’t want everyone to know she was Jewish. To Feferman, this episode is a red light. “We know there’s a crisis when a student on campus is afraid to reveal she’s Jewish and feels unsafe,” he said.

Another disturbing issue that day, according to Feferman, was that a Hillel executive was standing nearby, watching. Feferman can’t understand why he didn’t take action or get his students to help out.

The following day, Palestinian Media Watch’s Itamar Marcus addressed York students on the daily indoctrination of children living under the Palestinian Authority to hate Jews.

“It was absolute chaos,” Hollander declared. “It was impossible to moderate. People would ask loaded questions. Marcus wasn’t given an opportunity to respond. He refused to get into a screaming match. One girl, raised in Canada, said she herself would gladly be a suicide bomber and would have no qualms raising her daughter to become a shahid.”

A couple of weeks ago, when US-based anti-Israel professor of linguistics Noam Chomsky was scheduled to address York students via satellite, CCZ and Hasbarah joined forces to provide information about what Chomsky stands for.

“We wanted to do a protest,” Feferman said, “but the university administration wouldn’t allow it, saying they didn’t want a lot of noise and they were afraid that signs could be used as weapons.” The students settled for a table with handouts about Chomsky and two large posters, one depicting Chomsky with [Hezbollah leader] Nasrallah. One poster quoted Chomsky’s statement: “I see no antisemitic implications in denial of the existence of gas chambers, or even in denial of the Holocaust.”

Observer says hundreds of neo-Nazis could answer call to march

Saturday is the Sabbath, the day of rest for the Jewish people, but this Saturday looks like being anything but quiet, as dozens, possibly hundreds of far-right extremists from the Czech Republic and abroad are due to descend on Prague's Josefov quarter. They're threatening to march through the former ghetto on the 69th anniversary of the Kristallnacht pogrom against Germany's Jews, running the gauntlet of City Hall bans and a strong police presence.

The march is being organised by the far-right Young National Democrats, who say they will announce by Thursday a route and gathering point for participants. The group describes the march as a "protest against Czech participation in the occupation of Iraq".

It's filed request upon request to march down Maiselova street, home to a number of synagogues as well as the headquarters of the Federation of Jewish Communities and the Prague Jewish Community. The Young National Democrats want that route because they claim the Iraq war is being fought in the interests of Israel, but the night of November 9-10th is also the 69th anniversary of Kristallnacht.

The Young National Democrats deny being either neo-Nazi or anti-Semitic, describing such claims as "meaningless labels". The group's spokesman Jan Peterka says in an interview published on their website that neo-Nazi organisations are illegal in the Czech Republic and he doesn't know of any in existence here.

Later on, however, he claims the Czech Republic is under pressure from the "international Jewish lobby", pointing out that while the march was declared legal by the Czech courts, the Czech president has promised the president of the World Jewish Congress that the march wouldn't take place. "A better example of who's really pulling the strings in this country can't be found," he added.

But he's neither anti-Semitic nor a neo-Nazi.

At time of writing the march is banned, following a series of rulings and appeals. Even if there is another about-turn, however, the City Hall still has the power to ban the march as soon as it starts on public order grounds, and that's the ace up their sleeve so to speak.

However Ondrej Cakl, who works for a group which monitors far-right extremism in the Czech Republic, says up to 500 Czech neo-Nazis could attend the march, with 200 more coming from abroad. Surge in American Anti-Semitism

This is a rather disturbing trend and it's likely a result of the nonstop Israel bashing by the left, who see a neo-con around every corner.

Nearly 35 million American adults - 15 percent - hold views consistent with making them anti-Semitic, according to a survey released yesterday.

The Anti-Defamation League survey, conducted from between Oct. 6 and 19, also showed that 31 percent of Americans believe that Jews are more loyal to Israel than to America, and just over a quarter - 27 percent - believe that Jews were responsible for the death of Christ.

The survey showed that the nearly 35 million adults Americans who held views making them "unquestionably anti-Semitic" increased the rating 1 percentage point from the 14 percent of the 2005 survey.

In 1998, the number of Americans with hard-core anti-Semitic beliefs was as low as 12 percent.

Bad as it is here, things are even worse in Europe.

Foxman said that compared to Europe, the United States is a bastion of tolerance. In a survey earlier this year, half of the Europeans said they believe Jews are not loyal to their home nation.

Are Eastern German Police Soft on Neo-Nazis?

The eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, which had the highest incidence of far-right attacks in Germany last year, has launched a parliamentary inquiry into the region's police force following accusations that it has failed to investigate racist assaults properly.

The probe comes at a time of heightened public awareness of right-wing extremism in the east of Germany, following last month's attack on eight Indian men (more...) in the neighboring state of Saxony by a group of Germans shouting "Foreigners out!"

The investigating committee, which was set up at the request of the opposition Left Party, will focus on six cases, including a widely reported attack by skinheads on a theater group in the city of Halberstadt in June. Eyewitnesses said police officers didn't initially pursue the assailants, even though they were still at the scene when police arrived.

In another case, police in the town of Bernburg refused to take legal action against people accused of threatening and hurling racist abuse at asylum seekers from the African state of Burkina Faso.

The inquiry will also probe the former deputy police chief of the Dessau-Rosslau police department, who allegedly told staff that, regarding far-right crimes, "one doesn't have to see everything."

"We decided to focus on these cases but we could have chosen others," Gudrun Tiedge, a Left Party member of the committee, told SPIEGEL ONLINE. "We've made it clear that we don't want to level blanket accusations at the police, but we do want to analyze the cause of what's been happening. Maybe they were overstretched, for example."

Given the German infatuation with meticulous documentation, a cursory check of precinct records should tell the tale. Next excuse?

Spate of Attacks

Ever since unification, eastern Germany has seen a high level of far-right violence including random assaults on foreigners, arson attacks on kebab shops and swastikas daubed on Jewish cemeteries. The country's Jewish lobby last month echoed warnings from anti-racism campaigners that the region had become a no-go area for minorities.

Various reasons have been cited. One is that foreigners became scapegoats for the economic upheaval that came with the region's overnight transition to capitalism.

Another is that eastern German society was less resistant to neo-Nazi views than the west because under the communist regime, no sense of national responsibility for the Holocaust was instilled in people.

Reasonable explanation, as their new social benefactor shared the Austrian corporal's love of Jews.

Depopulation is a further factor -- educated young women have been moving away (more...) to get jobs in Germany's more prosperous regions, leaving behind bored, unemployed young men who seem to get a kick out of neo-Nazi ideology.

Yep. Not gettin' any will do it every time. Look at der Österreichisch unteroffizier, for example.

Saxony-Anhalt, which together with the eastern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania had the highest unemployment rate in Germany in August at 15.7 percent, has been one of the states hardest-hit by the post-unification slump.

Government Slow to Respond

The parliamentary committee will start work in the coming two weeks and spend the next few months hearing witnesses and questioning officials and police officers from the two police departments of Halberstadt and Dessau-Rosslau.

"The far-right and racist incidents that have come to light and the confusion over how the police dealt with them have made clear that a thorough and complete investigation is required," the Left Party (progressives, ed.) said in its motion to set up a committee. The ruling Christian Democrats and Social Democrats abstained in the vote to form it, but will have members on the committee, as will the opposition liberal Free Democrats.

Tiedge said the government was stepping up efforts to curb far-right support by funding anti-racism campaigns and special training in police forces. "The issue still isn't being addressed enough in our schools," he said. "All this should have been done many, many years ago."

Sixty-two years after the defeat of Nazi Germany, anti-Semitism remains alive and well in many parts of Europe. Defaced, toppled or broken headstones in France, Belgium, Poland or the Czech Republic. Or, the defacing of Berlin's Holocaust Memorial the same week it opened, societal losers continue to demonstrate their bravery through the perpetration of such acts.

Unbeknownst to these genii, they also demonstrate exactly who the untermenschen really are.

Is Anti-Semitism in Europe on the Rise?
A sober show in Berlin offers an introductory treatment -- if not a thorough examination -- of rising anti-Semitism in Europe and the Middle East since September 11.

When an exhibition on contemporary anti-Semitism opened this month at the Foreign Office in Berlin, Deputy Foreign Minister Gernot Erler said it was "appropriate" that the topic wasn't squirreled away in a historical museum but on display in the bright atrium of a German ministry.

"Anti-Semitism has sadly not been left where it belongs, in the poison cabinet reserved for the pathogens of hard-to-cure diseases of the past," he said. "Unfortunately it is a phenomenon of today's Europe which our foreign policy has to confront as well."

The exhibit, called "Anti-Semitism? Anti-Zionism? Criticism of Israel?" is a series of anti-Jewish posters and cartoons from Europe and the Middle East. It covers manifestations of anti-Semitism in the era of September 11, the second intifada, and the Iraq war -- from left-wing groups in Europe calling for boycotts of Israel to white supremacist bands and soccer hooligans behaving badly on the distant right.

"We have to uncover the roots of anti-Semitism," said Wolfgang Benz, director of Berlin's Center for Anti-Semitism Research, in an interview with the German daily Die Welt. (The Center organized the exhibition along with Jerusalem-based Yad Vashem, Israel's official Holocaust memorial.) "Above all we have to show that behind all forms of Jew-hatred there's some sort of instrumentalization: Jews are made responsible for grievances which they had nothing to do with."

The exhibition shows ugly examples of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories that surfaced after the September 11 assaults in America and the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia.

Jewish cemetery vandalised in Bohumin
The recently reconstructed cemetery of Czech Jews in Bohumin became a target of vandals at the weekend, local town hall spokeswoman Lucie Balcarova told CTK Monday.

The unidentified perpetrators destroyed and knocked down 25 gravestones.

The Jewish community, that ceremoniously reopened the cemetery after a six-month repair work two weeks ago, put the damage at around 30,000 crowns, Balcarova said.

If caught, the vandals can be charged with damage to a thing and breach of the peace, she added.

The town hall has promised help in the removal of the damage. "We are considering installing a closed-circuit television camera to monitor not only the cemetery, but also the adjacent area," Mayor Petr Vicha said.

"Moreover, after the cemetery is reopened, we are ready to send more police patrols there," Vicha added.

The local Jews are appalled at the act of vandalism. "I am awfully sad and it has tremendously hurt me," Jirina Garajova, chairwoman of the Bohumin Jewish community, said.

"Bohumin has no memorial to its Holocaust victims and this was one of the few opportunities to remind the Bohuman residents of their disappeared neighbours," Garajova said.

The Jewish cemetery in Bohumin was in use until the mid-19th century.

"Before 1939, there were some 400 Jews in Bohumin, of whom a mere eleven survived the Holocaust," Garajova said.

Thirty-two gravestones have been preserved at the cemetery. The Jewish community has made them repaired. The work cost almost 200,000 crowns, she added.

In 2006, Israel exported $3.4bn in defence products - well over a billion more than it received in American military aid. Much of this growth has been in the so-called homeland security sector. Before 9/11 homeland security barely existed as an industry. By the end of this year, Israeli exports in the sector will reach $1.2bn, an increase of 20%. The key products and services are hi-tech fences, unmanned drones, biometric IDs, video and audio surveillance gear, air passenger profiling and prisoner interrogation systems - precisely the tools and technologies Israel has used to lock in the occupied territories.

And that is why the chaos in Gaza and the rest of the region doesn't threaten the bottom line in Tel Aviv, and may actually boost it. Israel has learned to turn endless war into a brand asset, pitching its uprooting, occupation and containment of the Palestinian people as a half-century head start in the "global war on terror".
