'It's Like Hitting the Lotto For a Terrorist'

The best-case scenario here, if you call it that, is someone pilfered these blank birth certificates to sell to illegal aliens. The worst case, naturally, is bad news.

Very bad news.

A stack of blank birth certificates have been stolen from the city Health Department's offices, leading investigators to worry that they may have fallen into the hands of terrorists, The Post has learned.

On March 12, an employee discovered that 106 certificates with the agency's stamp on them were missing from the department's offices at 125 Worth St. near City Hall, sources said.

It was the first time in 10 years that blank birth certificates have been stolen from the department.

The NYPD and the city's Department of Investigation are investigating.

"It's like hitting the Lotto for a terrorist," one investigator said.

"Forged documents are one of the primary concerns of Homeland Security. After you get that birth certificate, you can get any document you want. This is extremely serious."

The missing documents were in a box of blank certificates that was stacked on other similar boxes.

The employee noticed they were missing because there was a break in the numbers on the certificates.

The department notified the Department of Investigation and the NYPD. It also alerted other agencies who deal with vital records.

Investigators believe the theft was carried out by someone who has access to the offices, probably an employee.

Of course, now that there's no longer a war on terrorism, maybe I'm just be paranoid. Besides, now we're welcoming terrorists to stay here in America.

'The Democrats Have a Lot to Learn About the Right of Free Speech Under the US Constitution'

The Democrats love free speech. As long as you agree with them. They're always willing to hear one side of every issue.

UK's Lord Christopher Monckton, a former science advisor to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, claimed House Democrats have refused to allow him to appear alongside former Vice President Al Gore at a high profile global warming hearing on Friday April 24, 2009 at 10am in Washington. Monckton told Climate Depot that the Democrats rescinded his scheduled joint appearance at the House Energy and Commerce hearing on Friday. Monckton said he was informed that he would not be allowed to testify alongside Gore when his plane landed from England Thursday afternoon.

“The House Democrats don't want Gore humiliated, so they slammed the door of the Capitol in my face,” Monckton told Climate Depot in an exclusive interview. “They are cowards.”

According to Monckton, Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas), Ranking Member on the Energy & Commerce Committee, had invited him to go head to head with Gore and testify at the hearing on Capitol Hill Friday. But Monckton now says that when his airplane from London landed in the U.S. on Thursday, he was informed that the former Vice-President had “chickened out” and there would be no joint appearance. Gore is scheduled to testify on Friday to the Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment's fourth day of hearings on the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. The hearing will be held in 2123 Rayburn House Office Building.

According to Monckton, House Democrats told the Republican committee staff earlier this week that they would be putting forward an unnamed 'celebrity' as their star witness Friday at a multi-panel climate hearing examining the House global warming bill. The "celebrity" witness turned out to be Gore. Monckton said the GOP replied they would respond to the Democrats' "celebrity" with an unnamed "celebrity" of their own. But Monckton claims that when the Democrats were told who the GOP witness would be, they refused to allow him to testify alongside Gore.

“The Democrats have a lot to learn about the right of free speech under the US Constitution. Congress Henry Waxman's (D-CA) refusal to expose Al Gore's sci-fi comedy-horror testimony to proper, independent scrutiny by the House minority reeks of naked fear,” Monckton said from the airport Thursday evening.

Benevolent Dictator Gives Island To New Jersey

The most loved and benevolent South American dictator, president for life, and reader of refined literature, Hugo Chavez, is giving New Jersey back an island. What a swell guy, especially after we killed 21 of his country's polo ponies.

Venezuela will give a 300-acre island in the Delaware River to the state of New Jersey, the governor's office announced.

The Venezuelan-owned Citgo Petroleum Corp. had bought Petty's Island -- between Camden, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania -- to use as a fuel storage facility.

The island is home to a pair of American bald eagles as well as several great blue herons and state-endangered black-crowned night herons, New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine said in a news release Wednesday.

Don't get too excited just yet. The transfer isn't scheduled to occur until 2020 at the earliest.

'There's An Appearance of Pay-to-Play'

Yes, there's an appearance of pay-to-play. There's also an appearance of rank corruption within Democratic circles, especially the people hanging around Barack Obama. Thank goodness we have transparency and openness.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson's campaigns and political-action committees received at least $102,300 from brokers hired by money managers seeking to handle $11.7 billion of state trust funds, campaign-finance records show.

In addition to those donations, Richardson, a Democrat who ran for president in 2008, received at least $95,000 from the state trusts' outside money managers.

That cash included $20,000 from Quadrangle Group LLC founder Steven Rattner and $50,381 from Leo Hindery, founder of InterMedia Advisors LLC, according to New Mexico and federal campaign-finance records.

Rattner, who directs the Obama administration's auto-industry task force, and Hindery have donated $3.8 million to Democratic candidates and political-action committees, compared with $110,200 to Republicans.

"There's an appearance of pay-to-play," said Steven Robert Allen, executive director of Common Cause New Mexico, a public-interest organization.

"Whether there's a quid pro quo or not, it raises questions in people's minds, and that's not good for a democracy to have those sorts of questions being raised about the most powerful elected official in our state."

Of course, Rattner has his own issues to deal with, but apparently he's protected.

Illegal Alien + 24 Beers = Dead Teenage Mother

Maybe Janet Napolitano will get this memo, but I doubt it. A teenager in this country illegally hit and killed a woman who was walking with her child along the road and all he gets is eight years in jail.

A teenager who pleaded guilty to hitting and killing a Clarke County woman as she walked along a road with her 3-year-old son has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

There is even more to this story. The woman he killed was 19 years old at the time she was murdered, which for anybody who didn't attend government school means that she was 16 when she gave birth.

Prosecutors said the teen is a native of Mexico who was working illegally in the U.S. He earlier pleaded guilty to first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI and hit-and-run.

Nayasheika "Keisha" Cooper, who was 19, died after being hit from behind in the June 14, 2008, accident.

Underage, driving drunk, and in the country illegally. The killer is only 16.

Gonzalez-Perez told police he had borrowed the truck and was drinking at a friend's house before the crash. He said he had 24 beers that day, but thought he was OK to drive after napping for an hour, according to police.

When are we going to get sick and tired of these stories and get serious about cracking down on the illegals? Where do the liberals stand on this case since both the victim and perpetrator belong to some of their protected classes?

'New York Would Be Better Served If They Bought a One-Way Ticket'

Well, it's not like there's a recession and people are tightening their belts, cutting costs and doing without the luxuries in life. Of course, being a New York Democrat means never having to apologize for wasting taxpayer money.

While Rome burns, Malcolm Smith and his state Senate pals will be touring the world. Despite the crippling fiscal crisis and the threat of massive MTA fare hikes, the Senate majority leader plans to lead a delegation of fellow Democrats to Puerto Rico next weekend -- followed by outings to China, Israel and India.

The junket plans set off a firestorm of criticism.

"New York would be better served if they bought a one-way ticket," said Senate Minority Leader Dean Skelos (R-LI).

Sen. Dean Skelos (R-LI) said, "I don't need to travel outside of New York -- and, frankly, I don't think anyone does -- to understand how important it is to try to create jobs here.

"That should be our overriding concern: create jobs, stimulate the economy and provide tax relief to people. If you have to go to India to figure that out, there's something wrong."

Former 1960s radical Bill Ayers is Boston-bound again, this time invited to speak at Brandeis University a month after he was blackballed at Boston College - prompting some of the same reactions.

“It is outrageous given his past and history,” said sophomore Douglas Moore, 20, of the Facebook group Students Against Bill Ayers Coming to Brandeis. “This isn’t something we should be allowing on campus . . . The type of activism Ayers is known for is that of violence and destruction.”

More Change You Can Believe In: Obama Seeks to Limit Defendants' Rights

It'll be interesting to see how far this one flies under the media radar.

The Obama administration is asking the Supreme Court to overrule long-standing law that stops police from initiating questions unless a defendant's lawyer is present, another stark example of the White House seeking to limit rather than expand rights.

Didn't we hear incessant howling for eight years about how Bush was conducting an assault on civil rights?

Where is the drumbeat of outrage?

The administration's action - and several others - have disappointed civil rights and civil liberties groups that expected President Barack Obama to reverse the policies of his Republican predecessor, George W. Bush, after the Democrat's call for change during the 2008 campaign.

Since taking office, Obama has drawn criticism for backing the continued imprisonment of enemy combatants in Afghanistan without trial, invoking the "state secrets" privilege to avoid releasing information in lawsuits and limiting the rights of prisoners to test genetic evidence used to convict them.

The case at issue is Michigan v. Jackson, in which the Supreme Court said in 1986 that police may not initiate questioning of a defendant who has a lawyer or has asked for one, unless the attorney is present. The decision applies even to defendants who agree to talk to the authorities without their lawyers.

Anything police learn through such questioning cannot be used against the defendant at trial. The opinion was written by Justice John Paul Stevens, the only current justice who was on the court at the time.

So an opinion written by liberal darling John Paul Stevens is now to be kicked to the curb?

Why? Does Obama not believe in the right to counsel before interrogation? I guess not.

Stephen B. Bright, a lawyer who works with poor defendants at the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta, said the administration's position "is disappointing, no question."

Bright said that poor defendants' constitutional right to a lawyer, spelled out by the high court in 1965, has been neglected in recent years. "I would hope that this administration would be doing things to shore up the right to counsel for poor people accused of crimes," said Bright, whose group joined with the Brennan Center and other rights organizations in a court filing opposing the administration's position.

Apparently, Obama doesn't care about the poor.

Former Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson and former FBI Director William Sessions are among 19 one-time judges and prosecutors urging the court to leave the decision in place because it has been incorporated into routine police practice and establishes a rule on interrogations that is easy to follow.

No doubt the media will be howling tonight about this gross threat to civil rights.

Speaking of Trump, who's been unusually silent (for him), he finally commented today and noted most of the calls and emails he's received have been supportive of Carrie Prejean.

The owner of the Miss Universe franchise finally addressed the scandal surrounding his Miss USA pageant to FOX News Thursday, saying that he has received thousands of calls and letters, the majority of which support Miss California's comments on gay marriage.

Trump had been mum during the firestorm that followed the Sunday telecast, when first runner up Carrie Prejean's responded to a question about the controversial issue of gay marriage.

Considering the overwhelming majority of Americans do not support gay marriage, including President Obama, this really comes as no surprise. Maybe Mario Lavandeira and all the Hollywood nitwits so quick to jump on Prejean might want to step back and realize they're the ones in the minority on this issue.

Then they might want to consider growing up.

The television laughingstock had a major exclusive last night. Somehow I missed this must-see TV.

Well, once again Larry King's bookers have got the big get -- Levi Johnston is scheduled to be on the CNN show tonight, unless his pickup breaks down in Saskatchewan.

It's billed as an "exclusive" -- at least for this week.

Johnston's such a huge star that LK actually had to wait until after Johnston did the Tyra Banks Show.

But the nation is pretty gosh-darned excited to get maybe its ninth look at this high school dropout hockey player who is said to have impregnated Bristol Palin, the Alaska governor Sarah Palin's teenage daughter. What better reason to put someone on prime-time TV for millions to not watch?

There's nothing like the word "former" to help splinter families wide open, which is great TV entertainment. Watching other families squabble and pretending we don't.

Another Black Eye for the NY Times

As the New York Times continues to hemorrhage money and the Boston Globe appears headed for the dustbin (unless John Kerry can bail them out), we now have the entertaining spectacle of greedy executives at the Old Grey Hag getting fat pay hikes while employees fret about their future.

This is just too delicious.

Here's an idea for the staffers. Since the Times is always in a high dudgeon over executive bonuses at profitable companies, how about they go protest outside the lavish home of their bosses?

As the New York Times struggles to hold onto its dwindling pile of cash, its board is getting slammed by angry employees for hiking top executive pay as much as 35 percent.

Employees face 5 percent pay cuts at the flagship newspaper, while its sister Boston Globe is under the threat of a permanent shutdown unless its employees accept steep pay cuts and layoffs worth $20 million to management.

"At one point in the negotiations, the company proposed eliminating all sick days for Guild members, like an Alabama sweat shop," wrote Globe reporter Brian Mooney on HuffingtonPost.com

How humiliating must it be that these Globe writers are reduced to posting at the web's house organ for hate?

The Times woes grew yesterday as Standard & Poor's cut its credit rating deeper in junk territory.

The downgrade could hike the Times' already high interest costs on corporate borrowing, such as the 14 percent rate on the $250 million the Times borrowed in January from Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helu to make ends meet. The Times also paid an extra $4.5 million to close the deal.

Blogs continued blistering Times brass and the Sulzberger-family dominated board for hiking management perks and pay while squeezing employees.

CEO Janet Robinson, for example, won a 35 percent jump in total compensation to $5.58 million this year from $4.14 million in '08, according to filings.

Improving Cross-border Relations

Security Paranoia Defies Logic
This is borderline insanity. The most worrisome U. S. official confronting Canada today is a former Arizona governor who thinks the U. S. northern border, which she's only flown over and never actually crossed on the ground, is a security threat on par with the drug-running, immigrant-smuggling, terrorist-sneaking border wall with Mexico.

And there's simply no comparison between the illegal entry trickle from Canada and the alien immigrant wave and drug smuggling surge pouring into the United States from the south. Of the estimated 500,000 illegal immigrants who enter the United States each year, 57% come from Mexico. Just 6% of those living illegally in the United States are Canadian. Somebody should also warn the Secretary that recent statistics show 500,000 Canadians spent tourist dollars in her Mexican border state in 2006 and that Arizona rates Canada its second-largest trading partner with almost $3-billion in trade.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is moving unapologetically forward on beefed-up border staffing and enhanced documentation requirements that will make Canadians and travelling Americans yearn for the security paranoia of the George W. Bush administration.

Ouch. Methinks someone's a bit pissed that Hopenchange isn't all that it was cracked up to be. On the other hand, maybe it is, you know, cracked up and stuff. So to speak.

Ms. Napolitano's brief interview with the CBC this week was jaw-dropping confirmation we're dealing with an irrational senior U.S. official who can't differentiate between a secure border linking the world's largest trading partners and one that's a giant sucking sound for jobs going south and what's been described as an 'invasion' of desperate Mexicans illegally sneaking north.

Ya think???

She actually invoked the bogeyman of 9/11 terrorists sneaking into the United States from Canada to bolster the case for a crackdown, even though the most elementary research would've told her there's no evidence to support that bogus claim.

When challenged on her concerns, she insisted still-secret data, undoubtedly buried with the aliens at Roswell, justifies her concern. She surely must know that only 12 of the 48 al-Qaeda operatives caught between 1993 and 2001 were illegal immigrants and none of those came from Canada.


The infamous quote from early in her Homeland Security posting was to fret at Mexico's hurt feelings. "If things are being done on the Mexican border, they should also be done on the Canadian border."

What's that precisely? Build another Texas wall? Does she have any concept that this 5,013-kilometre land border bisects towns and villages (heck, it even divides the stage from the seats in one Vermont-Quebec movie theatre)?

"The pattern at the Canadian border has been informality," she went on to say. "The borders are going to be enabled with greater technology, but it's not going to be going back and forth as if there's no border anymore."

Having crossed the border last week, let me assure you there's nothing informal or lacking about it. When friends on an annual golf getaway crossed at the 1,000 Islands, we joined a bunch of others in getting a major passport shakedown by armed American guards casting a very suspicious eyes at our duty-free haul of booze sandwiched between the bags carrying our instruments of fairway destruction.

They called me forward and demanded to know if I'd ever been arrested. Yes, yes, I confessed, there was a minor drug possession charge when I was just 18 (and I still insist it was Bob Green's pot), but it was wiped clean by a judge. It took a long discussion with border guards about the dangers of allowing in somebody never convicted of anything criminal before my born-in-the-U.S.A. birth certificate got me waved across.

I digress, but my point is that technology which can alert guards to a 34-year-old minor arrest that never resulted in a conviction shouldn't have much trouble fingering a known terrorist.

The new Homeland Security boss has a well-known Monty Python fetish. Perhaps she's decided to pattern herself after the black knight of Holy Grail movie fame, who declares "none shall pass," only to have his arms and legs hacked off in a sword fight even while insisting the amputations are ''but a scratch.''

If Janet Napolitano adopts a similarly defiant posture to squeeze her northern border into a business barrier, the United States will be cutting off the arms and legs of its integrated manufacturing base to block an enemy that doesn't exist.

Finally, a celebrity with some stones defending Carrie Prejean.

According to our first celebrity voicemail, Vince Curatola is furious with certain people (blogger Perez Hilton, in particular) for bashing Miss California Carrie Prejean after she voiced her opinion on gay marriage -- calling the attacks "disgusting."

Curatola even issued Perez a challenge -- "I wish he'd come after me that way."

Curatola actually does come from North Jersey. I doubt a pasty-faced puke like Hilton would want any part of him.

He's now forgiven for being in that Hillary commercial.

'There Is Absolutely No Doubt About It... the Cloned Child Is Coming'

I'm going step way out on a limb and say this might turn out a bit controversial.

Just a hunch.

A US-based fertility doctor has claimed to have cloned 14 human embryos and transferred 11 of them into the wombs of four women.

Panayiotis Zavos told Britain's Independent newspaper that although none of the women had had a viable pregnancy as a result, the first cloned baby could now be born within a couple of years.

"There is absolutely no doubt about it... the cloned child is coming. There is absolutely no way that it will not happen," he said, quoted by the paper.

"If we intensify our efforts, we can have a cloned baby within a year or two, but I don't know whether we can intensify our efforts to that extent."

Dr Zavos's work is widely condemned by mainstream fertility experts, who question whether the technique, which also raises complex ethical questions, is safe.

Although other scientists have created human cloned embryos in test tubes to extract stem cells for research, Dr Zavos has broken a taboo by actually putting them inside women's wombs.

He said he has also produced cloned embryos of three dead people, including a 10-year-old girl called Cady who died in a car crash in the US. The child's blood cells were frozen and sent to Zavos.

The doctor, a naturalised US citizen born in Cyprus, is thought to have carried out the procedures in a secret laboratory somewhere in the Middle East to escape the US ban on cloning.

Smart Move: Apple Yanks 'Baby Shaker' App From iPhone

While they're busy removing this, they need to remove the idiots who thought this was a good application for an iPhone.

This is just sick.

Apple yanked a despicable iPhone application from its online store today, putting to bed the "Baby Shaker" program that directs users to simulate infanticide.

The 99-cent download brings the image and sound of a crying baby to the phone. Then after the user's vigorous shaking, the crying stops and red x-marks cover the baby's eyes, gleefully marking its death.

There's a stop watch at the top of the screen to time the user.

"Baby Shaker" first showed up on Apple's App Store on Monday, but 2 ½ days of bad publicity finally forced the tech giant to dump it.

"Apple is supposed to have this rigorous vetting process where you can't even curse on an application -- but now it's OK to simulate killing a baby?" said Jennipher Dickens, communications director for The Brain Tree Project, a group that seeks to prevent childhood brain injuries.

While "Baby Shaker" is gone from Apple, it's still available through developer Sikalosoft.

The taste-challenged makers describe their program: "On a plane, on the bus, in a theater. Babies are everywhere you don't want them to be! They're always distracting you from preparing for that big presentation at work with their incessant crying ... See how long you can endure his or her adorable cries before you just have to find a way to quiet the baby down!"

Saved By The Bra

Last week we brought you the news of the Brazilian woman saved by a wad of bills in her bra. Well, wouldn't you know it, yet another woman has been saved by a bra.

A 57-year-old Detroit woman avoided serious injury when the underwire on her bra deflected a bullet shot at her from next door, police said.

The woman, who lives on the West side of Detroit, saw a group of men breaking into a neighbour's house on Tuesday morning. When the men spotted her, one of them fired a shot at her, a police spokesman said.

The bullet struck the underwire on the woman's bra and that saved her from a more serious injury, police said.

"It did slow the bullet down," said Detroit police spokesman Phillip Cook. "She sustained injuries but they're not life threatening."

Predictable: John Kerry Calls For Boston Globe Bailout

Just yesterday we wondered when the call for a government bailout of newspapers would come.

Today the hapless John Kerry takes the bait.

Troubled by the possible shuttering of his hometown paper, Sen. John Kerry reached out to the Boston Globe on Tuesday, then called for Senate hearings to address the woes of the nation's print media.

"To the Boston Globe family," the Massachusetts Democrat wrote to employees of the 132-year-old publication, which faces closure unless it can come up with $20 million in union concessions to parent company the New York Times by May 1. The Globe is losing $1 million a week.

"America's newspapers are struggling to survive, and while there will be serious consequences in terms of the lives and financial security of the employees involved, including hundreds at the Globe, there will also be serious consequences for our democracy where diversity of opinion and strong debate are paramount," Mr. Kerry said.

Who is he kidding? OK, let's see, we have Jeff Jacoby on the right.

And everyone else on the left.

This is diversity?

Maybe Lurch can pick up The Boston Herald when the Globe goes under. He might even find some diverse opinion there.

It's in no small part due to agenda-drive reporting why the Boston Globe is going under.

Is the junior senator from Massachusetts too incoherent to see that? Also, I can't see any more an egregious a waste of time and money than having the Senate debating anything to do with newspapers.

If Senator Kerry is so concerned the Globe can't come up with $20 million to help pay off their unions, why doesn't he have Mama T cut a check for them?
