Tom Hayden: Hey, I Forgive McCain for Killing People in Vietnam, So Lay Off Ayers Already

I guess this is some kind of moral equivalence in Tom Hayden's fevered mind. Buried deep in an otherwise reasonably fair account of Barack Obama's relationship with unrepentant terrorist William Ayers is this incredibly lame rationalization (H/T Lauren).

Tom Hayden, an anti-war activist who met Ayers in the 1960s and later was elected to the California Legislature, says Ayers' past should be forgiven.

"I have met and like John McCain, but he bombed, and presumably killed, many people in a war I opposed," Hayden says. "If I can set all that aside, I would hope that Americans will accept" that Ayers has changed, too.

Such arrogance. Because Hayden opposed the war, anything McCain did in prosecution of that effort is wrong, while Ayers was merely joining him in protest. So let's all just forget about it and get back to that hopey changy thing, OK?

Of course, Hayden was more than just an "activist" back in the 1960s. He helped organize the mayhem during the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago.

The figure most closely associated with the Chicago protests is Tom Hayden, now point man for Progressives for Obama. Students for a Democratic Society activist Gerry Long recalled to David Horowitz that Hayden noted the benefits of firebombing Chicago police cruisers. “I heard Tom Hayden speak, in chillingly cavalier tones, about street actions which would run the risk of getting people killed,” Todd Gitlin remembered in The Sixties. In a conversation with me, Mike Klonsky, SDS’s national secretary during the convention riots, described how Hayden plotted to scatter nails over a nearby highway. And Bill Ayers writes in his memoir, Fugitive Days, of Hayden’s altered persona when addressing closed audiences of radicals...

The behind-closed-doors Hayden occasionally ventured into public view. In Chicago, he called on activists to “avenge” the injuries of co-organizer Rennie Davis, who had suffered a concussion battling the police. Hayden exhorted the throngs: “Make sure that if blood is going to flow, it will flow all over this city.” Hayden wasn’t alone among future Chicago Eight defendants in his violent rhetoric. “If a pig comes up to us and starts swinging a billy club,” Black Panther Bobby Seale counseled, “and you check around and you got your piece, you got to down that pig in defense of yourself! We’re going to barbecue us some pork!”

Yup, just some community activists and what a shock, one is buddies with Obama while the other is not the point man of Progressives for Obama.

I guess Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn aren't the only "former" terrorists Obama knows.

Barrack Obama will be nominated by unanimous voice acclaim at the convention. The suggested roll call to include Hilary Clinton’s name would not be followed, according the latest press reports. Party officials were quoted that this would finally settle any divisions among the delegates. Yesterday, Invesco Field in Denver came alive as Michelle Obama got a rousing reception from over 25,000 delegates and guests at the Democratic Convention yesterday. Barrack Obama’s wife delivered a flawless account of how the Obamas and their family had achieved overwhelming public support through years of dedicated work. Hillary and Bill Clinton will lend their luster to the Democratic Convention on Tuesday and Wednesday as they take center stage with appearances making a solid pitch for unity. No Clinton posters were seen inside the Convention setting. Outside, there were some protesters.

So, the delegates and guests, watched by Joe Biden, the vastly experienced chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee running as the vice presidential pick, things were going well for the Democrats. The actual physical space has been turned into a coronation with it posh appearance. Micherlle Obama received general applause in all main TV channels for presenting a factual account of their lives and how Barrack Obama had ventured into the realm of politics. The story touched on the aspirations of Obama in striving for a lofty goal of serving everyone with respect and dignity. Mitchelle speech completely annulled any impressions reportedly injected by those trying to paint her as an angry and gruntled person. She and her two daughters were shown talking to Obama who came into the screen watching things from a friend's home in San Louis.

Quagmire: NY Times Revenue Plummets 10.1% in July

Heartbreaking, isn't it?

New York Times Co. said Tuesday that its July revenue from continuing operations fell 10.1 percent this year as advertising revenue slipped 16.2 percent.

Overall revenue dropped to $235.9 million in July from $262.3 million in July 2007, the publisher said.

A continuing drop in classified ads and cutbacks in spending by movie studios, car companies and hotels were offset only partially by a rise in revenue from media, financial services, advocacy and health care ads for a net drop of 16.2 percent.

The company's flagship The New York Times paper had 15.3 percent lower ad revenue. At its New England media group, which includes The Boston Globe, July ad revenue dropped 24.5 percent.

Newspapers across the country have seen revenue decline as advertisers shift spending online and circulation slips.

They're not exactly going broke, yet continue to hemorrhage revenue.

Still doesn't prevent them from driving the left-wing cart over the cliff by continuing to reveal sensitive information.

Unity! Nearly Half of Democrat Women Think Hillary Should Be VP Nominee

These simply are numbers that cannot be ignored.

The Democrats have a huge problem on their hands.

And it isn't going away.

Nearly half of Democratic women (47%) say Barack Obama should have chosen Hillary Clinton for his running mate instead of Senator Joseph Biden as the former First Lady prepares to speak tonight at the Democratic National Convention. Thirty-nine percent (39%) disagree.

But a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that a sizable majority (57%) of Democratic women believe that Obama is the Democratic candidate who will do best against John McCain in the November election.

Uh, yeah, but what about the other 43%?

Only 35% of Democratic men believe Hillary should be on the ticket with Obama while 56% say she should not be. Forty-six percent (46%) of all voters say no to Clinton as the veep choice versus 40% who favor her.

Similarly, 54% of likely Obama voters say she should not be his running mate, but 34%believe she should be. Interestingly, younger voters prefer Clinton on the ticket.

The broadcast media desperately tries to ignore this reality and pretend a nonentity like Jim Leach represents a wave of Republicans jumping ship.

They just don't get it.

Oh, and by the way, Obama lost four points since yesterday on the daily tracking poll.

Hmm. Now that's a change!

Gallup is also a dead heat. Some bounce from Greasy Joe. He might want to find somewhere else to be when The Pantsuit comes out tonight.

Holistic Hooker Looks to Bring Down Spitzer

Good news! We still have Eliot Spitzer to kick around.

A holistic health counselor and part-time hooker booker pleaded guilty yesterday to scheduling steamy trysts at the escort service favored by former Gov. Eliot Spitzer - but she's not going down without a fight.

The lawyer for Tanya Hollander, 36, said it wasn't fair that his client would be forever branded a felon while Spitzer - so far - skates free of criminal charges.

"I believe he is at the very least a potential co-conspirator," Michael Farkas said.

If Spitzer isn't charged with a crime by Hollander's sentencing in November, Farkas plans on trying to get her a lighter sentence by arguing that she is being treated more harshly than him.

"We're hoping for anything but jail time," he said.

Hollander could face between six months to a year in jail.

Prosecutors have refused to comment on whether the governor will be hit with charges for soliciting sex from hookers.

Unlike Temeka Lewis, her colleague at the Emperors Club VIP escort service, Hollander did not get a deal from the feds to spill the beans on the goings-on at the international hooker ring.

"She does not have a cooperation agreement," Farkas said. "However, she has been willing from the onset to cooperate."

He said the feds weren't interested in speaking to her. "They either have all they need on Mr. Spitzer or they are not going to prosecute Mr. Spitzer," he said.

Court papers do not indicate that Hollander had any contact with "Client No. 9" - later revealed to be the love gov.

Plot Against Obama Not a 'Credible Threat'

Who knows for sure what these maniacs were up to, but authorities now say there wasn't a credible threat to Barack Obama.

DENVER — Authorities are investigating whether a man arrested with rifles, ammunition and drugs in his truck made statements threatening Barack Obama, but emphasize he never posed a "credible threat" to the candidate or the Democratic National Convention.

Federal and local authorities had scheduled a news conference for Tuesday afternoon, but U.S. Attorney Troy Eid downplayed the case.

"We're absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado," Eid said in a statement.

FBI spokeswoman Kathy Wright confirmed the FBI was investigating reports the man had threatened Obama, who will be in Denver this week to accept the Democratic nomination for president. The Joint Information Center — a command set up by city, state and federal authorities to field media inquiries during the Democratic convention — said it had no immediate comment.

The action started around 1:30 a.m. Sunday when police in the eastern suburb of Aurora stopped a truck that was swerving erratically. The driver, 28-year-old Tharin Gartrell, had a suspended driver's license, and the truck was rented in the name of another person, said Aurora police Detective Marcus Dudley.

In the truck, officers found two rifles, including one with a scope; a bulletproof vest; boxes of ammunition; walkie-talkies; and suspected narcotics, Dudley said.

Aurora police, on edge because of heightened security surrounding the Democratic convention in Denver, alerted federal authorities.

Three hours later, at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, federal agents arrested Nathan Johnson, 32, at a hotel in Denver. He was being held on drug charges, Dudley said.

A half-hour after that, 33-year-old Shawn Robert Adolf jumped from a sixth-story window when authorities tried to arrest him at a hotel in suburban Glendale, police said.

Obama will have a new appreciation for law-enforcement, and for the fact (which most on the Left won't entertain) that sometimes when police stop and search someone — without a warrant! — for mere erratic driving, they really do discover far more serious crime. This is what happens when the airwaves of this country are saturated with racist and ideological hate speech by right wing ideologues such as Hannity, Limbaugh and Savage. It isn't surprising but it is extremely disapponting and disheartening to see the extreme right once again returning to publicly expressing fantasies of violence against Democrats and liberals, thus inciting emotionally unstable people to carry out such violent fantasies. This same use of violent rhetoric was what led to the death of Martin Luther King and other prominent Civil Rights leaders in the 60's, and may have contributed to the Kennedy assassinations. Now it appears that some in this country would like to return to using violence as a political tool once more.

What a tool. I guess using the same logic, we should blame the climate of hate from leftwing talk radio for inciting people to kill Michelle Malkin.

Last week when some nutcase sent white powder to McCain, the left immediately blamed Karl Rove and questioned the timing. But now they're sure it's some nefarious plot driven by Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh. Of course when we found out it was a Muslim, the story quickly disappeared.

We noted Monday that gay media honcho Paul Colichman complained about being tossed under the very crowded Obama bus. Well, now it's developed into a full-fledged pillow fight in the gay community.

GAY media czar Paul Colichman's vow in yesterday's Page Six not to support Barack Obama over the candidate's opposition to same-sex marriage has other gay media bigs aflame. "By tearing up his check for Obama, he basically wrote one to McCain," Genre editor Neal Boulton told us. "I openly - no, flamingly - endorse Obama, whether he says he's for gay marriage or not. . . . I know under Obama, it will only be a matter of time until the country sees the legalization of gay marriage." James Hipps, project manager for gay-marketing firm Vibe Media, wants gays to cancel their subscriptions to The Advocate. "I am appalled," he said. "For our gay-lesbian- bisxexual-transgender rights to continue to grow and not further diminish, then we need to stand behind [Obama]. Good luck with your life, Mr. Colichman.

Petraeus on McCain Short List?

Take these Vice Presidential guessing games however you want, but there's one very interesting name being floated.

Also curious is how John McCain is playing it coy as to when he'll actually announce it. Will he try and upstage The Messiah's Mile High coronation?

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain may announce his choice for a running mate earlier than expected, sources told FOX News on Monday.

McCain had previously said he would announce his vice presidential pick on Friday and would appear with that individual at a rally in Dayton, Ohio, following the announcement. Friday is McCain’s 72nd birthday.

But sources close to McCain’s campaign told FOX News that his decision may come sooner than that — possibly on Thursday, when Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination at Invesco field in Denver, Colo.

McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds diminished the news.

“I wouldn’t much weight into reports that there are windows of possibility,” he said.

Several names have come up repeatedly as McCain’s possible running mate, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and, perhaps, Democrat-turned-independent Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. Also named is Gen. David Petraeus, the incoming head of Central Command.

Seems the left is preemptively trying to sow a little discord between Petraeus and McCain, which is pretty laughable considering their scurrilous attack on Petraeus last year with the infamous General Betray Us ad that blew up in their faces.

Top NY Democrat Fundraiser: 'I Feel McCain Is Going To Be Very Difficult To Beat'

You know if Democrats are nervous in New York, they face a potential disaster come November.

Newly completed Republican polls show John McCain running "neck and neck" with Barack Obama in several Democrat-leaning legislative districts on Long Island, in Westchester and upstate, according to surprised GOP operatives.

Republicans aren't at a point of predicting that McCain will win heavily Democratic New York, but they say his better-than-expected showing means a higher GOP vote in November, and thus extra help in the crucial battle for control of the state Senate.

"McCain is doing much better in several areas than a lot of people expected, and that's obviously good for us," said one of the operatives.

"There seems to be a reluctance on the part of a lot of voters to back Obama, and that's benefiting McCain and our legislative candidates as well."

The secret GOP polling comes in the wake of a Siena College poll earlier this month that found Obama leading McCain among traditionally Democratic New York voters by a relatively meager 47 percent to 39 percent - down from 50 percent to 37 percent in July and 51 percent to 33 percent in June.

Don't forget either all the Hillary Clinton voters that already are jumping ship and you have a potential disaster.

The GOP polling is also consistent with growing fears about Obama's candidacy among top New York Democrats, many of whom are still smarting over his failure to pick Hillary Rodham Clinton as his running mate.

"I think most New York Democrats are concerned about Obama's slippage," said a Manhattan-based major Democratic fund-raiser with close ties to the party's leadership.

"I feel McCain is going to be very difficult to beat. He's been running a very smart campaign.

"I also worry that any numbers may not be accurate due to the 'Bradley effect,' so we won't really see an accurate poll until Election Day," the fund-raiser said.

'Wow! He Just Threw the Gay Community Under the Bus'

He's got a bone to pick with The Messiah.

PAUL Colichman, the William Randolph Hearst of the gay media, is not supporting Barack Obama for president. But that doesn't mean he's backing John McCain.

"I'm a die-hard Democrat," he tells Page Six. But Colichman was also a die-hard Hillary Clinton supporter. He and Harry Thomason produced a documentary, "The Hunting of the President: The 10-Year Campaign to Destroy Bill and Hillary Clinton."

Colichman, 46, who owns The Advocate and Out magazines, GayWired.com, and Here, the premium cable network for gays, said he finally dealt with his disappointment over Clinton's defeat last week and came around to Obama.

"I thought, 'Get over yourself!' I had literally written out a check to the Obama campaign. And then I saw him in front of an evangelical group in Anaheim," he said.

Before Rick Warren at the Saddleback Civil Forum, both Obama and McCain defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

"I thought, 'Wow! He just threw the gay community under the bus,' " Colichman said. "My partner looked over at me, and we tore up the check."

While all that may well be going on in Denver (probably at any random CodePink event), that is actually the exasperated plea from the mayor of Malia, in Crete, where drunken British youth are running amok.

The mayor of Europe's latest 'party' destination has called on the UK Government to do something about the drunken, rowdy young Britons invading his town.

'They scream, they sing, they fall down, they take their clothes off, they cross-dress, they vomit,' said Konstantinos Lagoudakis, mayor of Malia in Crete. 'It is only the British people — not the Germans or the French.'

The town has fallen prey to the curse of the package tour, like Ayia Napa in Cyprus, Faliraki in Greece and others before it.

'The government of Britain has to do something,' said Mr Lagoudakis. 'These people are giving a bad name to their country.'

The fact that the mayor's comments appeared in the New York Times will only underline the impression that he is right.

They come in the wake of a Foreign Office report which said 602 Britons had been hospitalised and 28 raped in Greece alone in 2006/07, with the number of UK citizens arrested in foreign resorts up by more than 15 per cent to 4,603.

'Many arrests are due to behaviour caused by excessive drinking,' the Foreign Office report added.

Malia hit the headlines last month after 20-year-old Briton Leah Andrews was accused of strangling her newborn child in her hotel room. She is now in custody charged with infanticide.

The residents, hoteliers and traders are so frustrated by the deterioration of their town that last year they held an anti-British demonstration. Now the main tourist strip is patrolled by 20 police officers who break up fights and make arrests.

'It Was Kind of Pathetic, To Tell You The Truth'

John Edwards is burning up the phone lines, begging former aides and backers to forgive him for lying about his affair - but hearing their rage instead.

As Democrats kick off their convention Monday, the onetime presidential contender is a man without a party - or a political future - trying to rebuild bridges through dozens of remorseful phone calls.

It's proving a hard sell with onetime true believers.

Many are bitter and disillusioned after swallowing his lies about his affair with a campaign staffer and vouching for his credibility with friends and journalists.

Some ignore his plaintive phone entreaties and don't call back - even when Edwards leaves follow-up messages. A few return his calls - and give him a piece of their angry minds.

When Edwards reached one longtime confidant asking for advice, he was cut off with a terse: "I don't want you to call me again."

The conversation ended abruptly.

"I let you down, and I'm sorry," is a common refrain of these messages, said another top ex-assistant on the receiving end of one of the calls.

"It was kind of pathetic, to tell you the truth," said the ex-aide, who said he didn't return the call and doesn't expect to speak to his former boss again.

It's over, Johnny.

A Little Something Else for Democrats to Whine About

One of their favorite punching bags, Tom DeLay, could soon be cleared of money-laundering charges.

Money-laundering charges against former U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay and two indicted co-conspirators may be dismissed because the 2002 campaign finance case involved checks and not cash, a lawyer for DeLay said Sunday night.

"We win," said Dick DeGuerin, DeLay's lawyer, "because there's nothing but checks in the case."

The state's 3rd Court of Appeals on Friday actually upheld the money-laundering indictments against DeLay's two campaign associates, John Colyandro of Austin and Jim Ellis of Washington.

But the ruling contained a silver lining for the trio's lawyers because it concluded that the state's money-laundering statute — written in 1993 to combat illicit drug activity by focusing on the cash in the criminal transactions — did not apply to checks at the time DeLay is accused of laundering corporate money into campaign donations. The Legislature changed the law in 2005 to include checks.

Lawyers for the three defendants have included the check-versus-cash argument in other legal motions. But it was not part of the constitutional challenge that was before the 3rd Court of Appeals, so the appellate court could not dismiss on those grounds, DeGuerin said.
