What Could Go Wrong? HBO Developing Dick Cheney Miniseries

Based on a PBS Frontline documentary and written by a former West Wing writer. No doubt this will be a fair and accurate portrayal of Dick Cheney. HBO just aired a special on Ronald Reagan made by a man who hates him, have plans to give Sarah Palin a good working over and now will be going after Cheney. Looks like they're really gearing up for 2012.

The mini, which will be based on the bestselling book and the Frontline documentary The Dark Side, tells the story of Richard Bruce Cheney from his early days as Donald Rumsfeld’s protégé in the Nixon administration, to the nation's youngest Chief of Staff under President Ford, to serving as Secretary of Defense under George H.W. Bush, through two controversial terms as Vice President under President George W. Bush. According to the producers, the project will center on Cheney's "single-minded pursuit of enhanced power for the Presidency (that) was unprecedented in the nation's history."

That sure is approaching the subject on an even keel.

Rick Cleveland (Six Feet Under), who shared a writing Emmy with Aaron Sorkin for NBC's White House drama The West Wing, is writing the mini, produced by Spring Creek Prods. and Fair Catch Prods. Spring Creek's Paula Weinstein and Jeffrey Levine, Frontline's David Fanning and Michael Kirk and Fair Catch Prods.' David Kennedy are executive producing.

This is the second HBO longform project about prominent Republican party figures announced in the past few weeks. The pay cable network also has greenlit Game Change, a Jay Roach-directed movie, which follows John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign from his selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate to their ultimate defeat in the general election. Julianne Moore has been cast as the former Alaska governor.

Leave it to Dick Cheney to get in the best dig at the groundbreaking for the George W. Bush Library. Surely his good friends on the left will appreciate his biting sarcasm by wishing another heart attack on him.

The ceremony featured former vice president Dick Cheney, who made one of his first public appearances since heart surgery this year -- and who, in contrast to his former boss, couldn't resist taking a shot at Obama.

Citing the construction schedule of the library, Cheney said, "This may be the only shovel-ready project in America," using a phrase Obama used to describe stimulus bill items but later discarded.

Cheney, looking thinner, cited some of the positive reviews of Bush's book and said critical assessments of his presidency may be starting to change.

"History is beginning to come around," Cheney said.

Bush joked about the overtime 2000 election with Al Gore. He noted it was just over a decade ago that voters went to the polls -- and, "just under a decade ago, we just figured out the result." He said he's the only candidate "who won the same election five times."

Outpouring of Affection for Cheney After He Appears at California Event

Nothing quite like the compassionate left and their cruelty toward their fellow countrymen.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney appeared gaunt and frail as he defended Bush administration terror policies before a sellout California crowd over the weekend.

Cheney, who suffered his fifth heart attack in February, was seated for the entire event in Bakersfield on Saturday as he chatted with his wife, Lynne.

"She's been my nurse, my negotiator with the medical community, and in return for all of that great help she's given me, today I've agreed to let her interview me," the 69-year-old Cheney said.

Cheney spoke to a capacity crowd of about 10,000 at the Bakersfield Business Conference, where full-day tickets cost $495.

Cheney defended the interception of overseas phone calls and tough interrogation techniques. "All of this turned out to be very controversial," Cheney said, "But it was absolutely necessary."

The Bakersfield event was believed to have been Cheney's first public appearance since his July heart surgery.

Of course this news brings out the ghouls.

Cheney Hospitalized With Chest Pains

It's a slow news day, so Dick Cheney decided it was time to stir things up. Kind of a recurring theme with him.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney was at George Washington University Hospital Monday in Washington, D.C. after experiencing chest pains.

A family member told NBC News he was resting comfortably while doctors evaluated his condition.

Two doctors at George Washington University Hospital said Cheney was stable but may have additional treatment Tuesday. "We don't know what the plan is," one physician told NBC News.

Cheney apparently had an angiogram to allow doctors to look in his coronary arteries with the results indicating the possibility of additional treatment. No further information was immediately available, including when he was admitted to the hospital.

Cheney has had a long history of heart problems, including four heart attacks, starting when he was 37 years old. He has had quadruple bypass surgery and two artery-clearing angioplasties. In 2001, he had a special pacemaker implanted in his chest. The pacemaker's battery was replaced in 2007, and then the entire device was replaced. In 2007 he also had an abnormal heart rhythm in 2007 and an electric shock was given to restore a normal rhythm.

In 2005, he had surgery to repair an arterial aneurysm on the back of each knee.

In October 2008, Cheney was hospitalized for treatment of an atrial fibrillation, an abnormal rhythm involving the upper chambers of the heart. A White House spokesman said an electric shock was administered at a Washington hospital.

No doubt the compassionate left will be sending their prayers.

Vice Idiot Biden: Cheney Rewriting History or Something

Just this past week Joe Biden incredibly gave Barack Obama and himself credit for the way things have turned out in Iraq.

The statement claiming credit for the ultimately favorable outcome in Iraq was striking to many. This is because:

a) Obama had opposed the war from the beginning,

b) both Obama and Biden opposed the U.S. troop surge of 2007 by President George W. Bush widely credited with producing the relative peace and stability to enable a U.S. exit,

c) both Obama and Biden predicted incorrectly that the troop surge would actually worsen sectarian strife there.

d) Biden even proposed partitioning the country into separate areas, and

e) the status of forces agreement with Iraq that established the ongoing U.S. troop withdrawal was negotiated by the preceding Republican administration long before Obama took the oath of office twice.

Other than that, however, the Obama-Biden team would seem to deserve all the credit. Perhaps former Vice President Dick Cheney will have something to say about his successor's claim during an appearance this Sunday morning on ABC's "This Week."

With that in mind, Biden should be the last person on earth accusing others of rewriting history.

“Let me choose my words carefully here,” Biden said in an interview taped Saturday night from Vancouver. “Dick Cheney's a fine fellow. He's entitled to his own opinion. He's not entitled to rewrite history. He's not entitled to his own facts.”

I guess only Biden is entitled to his own facts and the rewriting of history.

Memo to Cindy Sheehan: Dick Cheney Is No Longer in Office

It seems only logical to me that if you want to protest some government action you voice your complaints to those in office. Yet the pitiable Cindy Sheehan seems a wee bit confused these days.

A group led by anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan has protested near the CIA's headquarters and former Vice President Dick Cheney's home in northern Virginia.

They were protesting the use of unmanned drone aircraft to attack al-Qaida and Taliban targets.

The group of about 70 people rallied alongside a highway near the CIA compound Saturday. About half then marched to Cheney's nearby street and stayed for 20 minutes. Police kept them from going down his street.

Protesting attacks on al-Qaida targets? Makes you wonder which side these people are on.

Ms. Plame Wilson's 15 Minutes Nearly Up

A federal appeals court has ruled that the Central Intelligence Agency didn't violate the free speech rights of ex-CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson when it refused to allow her to publish details of her possible pre-2002 work for the agency.

In an order Thursday, the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court's ruling that the CIA didn't infringe on Wilson's First Amendment rights when it refused a request by Wilson and her publisher, Simon & Schuster Inc., to publish details of her work with the agency prior to 2002 as part of a memoir.

"Because any information concerning Ms. Wilson's possible pre-2002 agency affiliation remains properly classified, and because Ms. Wilson is obligated by a secrecy agreement with the CIA not to disclose classified information, the district court correctly ruled that plaintiffs cannot demonstrate a First Amendment violation in this case," U.S. Circuit Judge Reena Raggi wrote on behalf of the three-judge panel.

Wilson had argued the CIA "officially disclosed" the dates of her pre-2002 service in a letter sent to her in February 2006 and her pre-2002 dates of service are now a matter of widespread public knowledge and it would be unreasonable to keep them classified.

A lawyer for Wilson didn't immediately return a phone call seeking comment Thursday.

She probably wants her (cough cough) privacy.

Of course we can only hope those 15 minutes are near an end. Except we still have this coming down the pike. I'm sure with Sean Penn in it it will be fair and impartial.

Cheney Statement on CIA Documents/Investigation
Former Vice President Dick Cheney gave The Weekly Standard a statement Monday night about the CIA documents and the coming Justice Department investigation.

The documents released Monday clearly demonstrate that the individuals subjected to Enhanced Interrogation Techniques provided the bulk of intelligence we gained about al Qaeda. This intelligence saved lives and prevented terrorist attacks. These detainees also, according to the documents, played a role in nearly every capture of al Qaeda members and associates since 2002. The activities of the CIA in carrying out the policies of the Bush Administration were directly responsible for defeating all efforts by al Qaeda to launch further mass casualty attacks against the United States. The people involved deserve our gratitude. They do not deserve to be the targets of political investigations or prosecutions. President Obama’s decision to allow the Justice Department to investigate and possibly prosecute CIA personnel, and his decision to remove authority for interrogation from the CIA to the White House, serves as a reminder, if any were needed, of why so many Americans have doubts about this Administration’s ability to be responsible for our nation’s security.

Indeed.

Cheney Inks Book Deal, Heads to Explode

We have at least two years of build-up before his book is released, giving the angry left plenty of time to have an enduring freak-out. I'll say this: You can virtually guarantee this will be a No. 1 bestseller and will be greeted with ignominious disdain by literary critics. One can almost envision protest marches outside the offices of Simon & Schuster already materializing.

The memoir by Cheney, widely considered the most powerful vice president in history, is expected to be published in Spring 2011, a few months after President George W. Bush's book comes out. Cheney's work is currently untitled and will cover his long career in government, from chief of staff under President Gerald Ford to vice president under Bush, from Vietnam and Watergate to the first Gulf War and the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

In a telephone interview Tuesday with The Associated Press, the 68-year-old Cheney noted that he had never written a book about his years in government, which dates back to the 1960s.

"I'm persuaded there are a lot of interesting stories that ought to be told," Cheney said. "I want my grandkids, 20 or 30 years from now, to be able to read it and understand what I did, and why I did it."
Financial terms were not disclosed. A publishing official with knowledge of the negotiations, but not authorized to publicly discuss, said the deal was likely worth at least $2 million. Cheney's literary representative, Washington attorney Robert Barnett, declined comment.

Known for his secrecy while in the Bush administration, Cheney has made it clear since leaving office that he was planning a memoir. He is working on the book — in longhand and on computer — at his home outside of Washington, D.C., and in collaboration with his daughter, Liz Cheney.

Books by former vice presidents rarely attract a lot of interest unless the author is likely to run for president (Richard Nixon had a best seller in the early 1960s with "Six Crises"), or claims an expertise outside of electoral politics (Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth," released in 2006 and the companion to the Academy Award-winning documentary about global warming).

What exactly is Algore's expertise outside of bamboozling a gullible public with misinformation while lining his pockets?

The book will be published by Simon & Schuster's Threshold Editions imprint, founded in 2005 and headed by a longtime Cheney friend and former aide: Republican strategist Mary Matalin. Threshold has become an unofficial publishing home to the Cheney family, releasing memoirs by Cheney's wife Lynne Cheney and by daughter Mary Cheney.

Matalin has not only reaffirmed her Washington connections, but tapped into — like few others — the current conservative market. She has published one of the most popular works of 2009, Mark Levin's "Liberty and Tyranny," and recently released "Glenn Beck's Common Sense," which on Tuesday ranked No. 1 on Amazon.com.

At least when contrasted with Barack Obama, we'll actually know who wrote this book.

OK, Please Go Away Now

The things that wouldn't leave are inched ever closer to the door.

The U.S. Supreme Court will not revive a lawsuit that former CIA operative Valerie Plame brought against former members of the Bush administration.

The court on Monday refused to hear an appeal from Plame and her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson.

A lower court last year threw out the lawsuit in which Plame and Wilson accused former Vice President Dick Cheney and several former high-ranking administration officials of disclosing her identity to reporters in 2003. Plame and Wilson said that violated their constitutional rights.

Of course these two never quite will go away. Even worse, the loathsome Sean Penn will soon be playing that hack Wilson in an upcoming movie, sure to receive critical acclaim and few box-office receipts.

'Rush Will Not Get His Wish and Mr. Cheney Was Misinformed'

Well maybe you can stop bad-mouthing two of the most popular conservatives out there. Maybe apologize for endorsing Obama while you're at it.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell touted his Republican credentials Sunday, shooting down pointed criticism from Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney that he had abandoned the GOP.

Limbaugh has called on Powell to join the Democrats, while Cheney has said he believes Powell already left his party.

"Rush will not get his wish and Mr. Cheney was misinformed. I am still a Republican," Powell said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

While standing by his loyalty to the Republicans, Powell defended his endorsement of President Obama last fall and continued to call on the Republican Party to be more moderate and expand its base.

"You can only do two things with a base. You can sit on it and watch the world go by, or you can build on it," Powell said. He said the party should be more inclusive.

This kind of advice has riled some conservatives, who warn that too much moderation will cause the Republican Party to merely mimic the Democrats. In calling for the party to be more moderate, Powell has also criticized conservatives like talk show host Limbaugh.

Cheney Seeks Book Deal, Lefty Heads Explode

If you ask me, this will be the most anticipated best seller in years. No question it will be a New York Times best seller and they won't even review it.

With his sustained blitz of television appearances and speeches, former Vice President Dick Cheney has established himself as perhaps the leading Republican voice against President Obama.

Not a bad time, then, to be in the market for a multimillion-dollar book contract.

Mr. Cheney is actively shopping a memoir about his life in politics and service in four presidential administrations, a work that would add to what is already an unusually dense collection of post-Bush-presidency memoirs that will offer a collective rebuttal to the many harshly critical works released while the writers were in office and beyond.

Already working hard to meet publishers’ deadlines is an informal writers’ workshop of historic proportions: President George W. Bush; Laura Bush, the former first lady; former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; former Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr.; former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld; and Karl Rove, the former presidential political mastermind.

Members of the Bush group are in regular contact as they seek to jog their memories, compare notes and trade stylistic tips in their new lives as authors, according to friends and current and former aides.

The coming crush of books reflects what former Bush officials describe as a desire to produce their own drafts of history after gritting their teeth for so long over the works of the journalists and disgruntled colleagues who penned the first, second and third drafts before them.

Adding to the eagerness is that Mr. Bush and his team had no vocal defender in the presidential campaign last year, when even the Republican nominee, Senator John McCain of Arizona, often attacked their stewardship.

“This is a group that kept their powder dry for a long time,” said Ed Gillespie, the former counselor to Mr. Bush, who stays in close contact with his colleagues. “People will get a firsthand account of the real nature of the decisions and the choices this administration had to make, and maybe there are some things people weren’t free to say at the time that they can say now that can shed some light on some things.”

If anything, it'll have the left freaking out for some time. In fact, they already are just at the mention of it.

What no one seems to understand is that a lot of this Cheney offensive is about Liz Cheney. As someone who knows them, I can tell you that the Cheneys have enormously high hopes for Liz -- even to the White House. Yeah, I gag, too. This critique of Obama is only partly about refurbishing the Bush-Cheney legacy. It is primarily about Cheney re-establishing his own identity as the leading bad-ass of Republican politics, which will sell well in a large portion of the party. And it allows Liz Cheney a large number of platforms to defend her father's view, establish her own identity nationally, win admirers (yeah, I'm gagging again) and prepare for her own political future. Liz will run for either the Senate or a governorship within the next two election cycles and after that watch out -- she has her eyes on the prize of the presidency in 2016 or just beyond -- and no I am not kidding. Liberalism as Mental Disorder: 'White House Reporter Protecting Cheney'

If you need any more evidence liberalism is a mental illness, look no further. Considering George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were the most reviled administration (from the media point of view) in our history, the notion that someone in the White House press corps is "protecting" Dick Cheney is laughable, yet this twit makes such an assertion.

One of the odder things we’ve seen from some members of the White House press corps this year is a kind of zealous over-protectiveness of the previous administration — Dick Cheney, in particular.

Back in March, after Cheney accused Obama of putting the country in danger the first time, White House press sec Robert Gibbs defended Obama by describing Cheney as a member of a GOP “cabal.” The comment triggered outrage from the MSNBC gang and other reporters who said Gibbs hadn’t shown the former Veep proper deference.

Today during the briefing, another reporter (I’m not sure who) attacked Gibbs again for being mean to Cheney. The reporter said Gibbs had taken a “swipe” at Cheney. What was the swipe? Earlier in the briefing, Gibbs had responded to Cheney’s attack by puckishly saying he had a lot of time on his hands. That was the swipe.

Memo to moonbat: Dick Cheney's a big boy. He doesn't need anyone to "protect" him. Not that anyone is doing that.

To think MSNBC, of all places, is doing Cheney's dirty work just confirms how idiotic this man is.

Seymour Hersh: Cheney Had Benazir Bhutto Whacked

This old crank has come up with some nutty stuff before, but this one takes the cake. Irresponsible beyond belief.

A special death squad assassinated Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto on the orders of former US Vice-President Dick Cheney, an Arab TV channel has reported.

“Cheney was the chief of the Joint Special Operation Command and he cleared the way for the US by exterminating opponents through the unit and the CIA. General Stanley was the in-charge of the unit,” The Nation quoted US columnist Seymour Hersh, as saying.

The US death unit killed Bhutto because she had told Al-Jazeera TV about the assassination of Osama Bin Laden, Hersh said.

The US leadership did not want Osama to be declared dead. It would have raised questions about the US Army’s presence in Afghanistan, he claimed.

According to Hersh, the former Lebanese PM Rafique Al Hariri and the army chief were murdered for not safeguarding US interests and for refusing to set up US military bases in Lebanon.

I'm sure this will go over well with out "allies" in Pakistan.

By the way, The Nation they refer to is a Pakistani paper not to be confused with the far left American magazine.

Seymour also said that Rafiq Al Hariri and the Lebanese army chief were murdered for not safeguarding the US interests and refusing US setting up military bases in Lebanon. Ariel Sharon, the then prime minister of Israel, was also a key man in the plot.

Cheney Request for Documents Release Denied

For all the hubbub over Dick Cheney this week it sure looks like he produces results and is getting under the skin of Obama and the Democrats. This news should only ratchet things up several notches.

The Obama administration has turned down former Vice President Dick Cheney’s request for the declassification of two CIA reports on the effectiveness of the Agency’s detainee program, THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned. A letter dated May 7, 2009, from the CIA’s Information and Privacy Coordinator, Delores M. Nelson, rejected Cheney’s request because the documents he has requested are involved in a Freedom of Information Act court battle.

“In researching the information in question, we have discovered that it is currently the subject of pending FOIA litigation (Bloche v. Department of Defense, Amnesty International v. Central Intelligence Agency). Therefore, the document is excluded from Mandatory Declassification Review,” Nelson wrote in the letter to the National Archives, the agency responsible for handling Cheney’s request.

The rejection of Cheney’s request will almost certainly intensify the public back-and-forth between the former vice president and the current administration. The contentious debate over enhanced interrogation exploded on April 16, when Obama authorized the release of four memos on interrogation prepared by the Bush Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel. In a statement accompanying the release, Obama pointed to “exceptional circumstances” surrounding the memos that required their declassification and release. Four days later, in an interview on Fox News, Cheney revealed that he had requested the declassification of two memos that demonstrate that the techniques were effective.

Keeping these memos hidden will only embolden Cheney and make him look like he wants the truth to be know while at the same time the Democrats, most notably Nancy Pelosi, are haplessly flailing about. They've turned an issue they've wielded effectively for years against themselves.

Unnamed GOP Critics 'Wince' Over Cheney

MSNBC and the Washington Post aren't even trying to hide the bias with this headline:

So they name names of those who are wincing, right?

Uh no, they don't.

They allegedly find two anonymous "Republican strategists" who don't want to be named to criticize Dick Cheney, yet this is spun a many in GOP wince.

How about identifying some of those in the GOP who are actually wincing?

Cohen: Hey, Maybe Cheney Is Right About Torture

Nothing like a reliable liberal have the audacity to agree with Dick Cheney. Of course Richard Cohen throws in all the necessary caveats about Cheney being a bad guy just to keep his street cred, but he trying to be honest and tell the truth. Not that it does him a lot of good with his core audience.

Cheney says he once had the memos in his files and has since asked that they be released. He's got a point. After all, this is not merely some political catfight conducted by bloggers, although it is a bit of that, too. Inescapably, it is about life and death -- not ideology, but people hurling themselves from the burning World Trade Center. If Cheney is right, then let the debate begin: What to do about enhanced interrogation methods? Should they be banned across the board, always and forever? Can we talk about what is and not just what ought to be?

In a similar vein, can we also find out what Nancy Pelosi knew and when she knew it? If she did indeed know about waterboarding back in 2003, that would hardly make her a war criminal. But if she knew and insists otherwise, that would make her one of those people who will not acknowledge that the immediate post-Sept. 11 atmosphere allowed for methods that now seem abhorrent. Certain Democratic politicians remind me of what Oscar Levant supposedly said of Doris Day: "I knew [her] before she was a virgin." They have no memory of who they used to be.

Naturally, the forces of tolerance react kindly to Cohen with their typical class.

'If I Had To Choose in Terms of Being a Republican, I'd Go With Rush Limbaugh'

Seems Rush Limbaugh is very popular this weekend. Last night the lovely and charming Wanda Sykes wished death upon him while Barack Obama chortled.

Today former Vice President Dick Cheney chose Limbaugh in favor of Colin Powell as the direction the GOP should head in.

Cheney told a Sunday talk show he didn't know Powell was still a Republican. Powell endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president, and Cheney said, "I assume that's some indication of his loyalty."

Powell says Republicans need to move to the center and Limbaugh diminishes the party by injecting nastiness into public life. Limbaugh has responded that Powell is "just another liberal" and should become a Democrat.

Cheney told CBS' "Face the Nation" that "if I had to choose in terms of being a Republican, I'd go with Rush Limbaugh."

Naturally, this is being greeted warmly over at DNC Headquarters.

Beware the Coming Liberal Meltdown: Cheney Warns of Nuclear, Biological Attacks

Rather than do anything to help prevent such attacks, expect the reaction from the left to be a total meltdown over Dick Cheney having the audacity to make such a prediction.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney warned that there is a “high probability” that terrorists will attempt a catastrophic nuclear or biological attack in coming years, and said he fears the Obama administration’s policies will make it more likely the attempt will succeed.

In an interview Tuesday with Politico, Cheney unyieldingly defended the Bush administration’s support for the Guantanamo Bay prison and coercive interrogation of terrorism suspects.

And he asserted that President Obama will either backtrack on his stated intentions to end those policies or put the country at risk in ways more severe than most Americans—and, he charged, many members of Obama’s own team—understand.

“When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry,” Cheney said.

Protecting the country’s security is “a tough, mean, dirty, nasty business,” he said. “These are evil people. And we’re not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek.”

Citing intelligence reports, Cheney said at least 61 of the inmates who were released from Guantanamo during the Bush administration—“that’s about 11 or 12 percent”—have “gone back into the business of being terrorists.”

The 200 or so inmates still there, he claimed, are “the hard core” whose “recidivism rate would be much higher.” He called Guantanamo a “first-class program,” and “a necessary facility” that is operated legally and with better food and treatment than the jails in inmates native countries.

But he said he worried that “instead of sitting down and carefully evaluating the policies,” Obama officials are unwisely following “campaign rhetoric” and preparing to release terrorism suspects or afford them legal protections granted to more conventional defendants in crime cases.

The choice, he alleged, reflects a naïve mindset among the new team in Washington: “The United States needs to be not so much loved as it needs to be respected. Sometimes, that requires us to take actions that generate controversy. I’m not at all sure that that’s what the Obama adminstration believes.”

I know it will be hard for the haters to understand why their delusional fantasy that everyone will love us again hasn't come to fruition. But in case they haven't noticed there are numerous international hotspots bubbling up around the globe and few of them foretell rosy days ahead. Even Obama's worldwide charm offensive won't help us prevent something like this.

Of course, more hatred will be unleashed upon Dick Cheney than has even been directed toward our enemies. Bank on it.
