Steelers RB Mendenhall Melts Down on Twitter Following Bin Laden Death

Can it get any dumber than this?
Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall is being criticized on social media sites for Twitter posts that question celebrations of the death of Osama bin Laden.

"What kind of person celebrates death? It's amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We've only heard one side ...," Mendenhall wrote in a post on Monday afternoon. "I believe in God. I believe we're ALL his children. And I believe HE is the ONE and ONLY judge."

When another Twitter poster suggested that bin Laden wasn't responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Mendenhall responded: "We'll never know what really happened. I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style."

Mendenhall has 14,240 followers on Twitter, a number that increased last night after word of his bin Laden comments spread. In his Twitter profile, Mendenhall describes himself as a "conversationalist and professional athlete."

The Steelers declined comment and Mendenhall couldn't be reached, but other Twitter members were quick to bash the 23-year-old running back, who is entering his fourth NFL season.

Within hours of the post, dozens of people weighed in, calling Mendenhall a "moron" and "idiot," among other names. A few posters, though, agreed with Mendenhall's assessment.
Here's his Twitter account. Seems he's taken way too many shots to the head.

Rats - I love the Steelers.  Hadn't heard about this.  Perhaps we need to point out to these youngsters that Bin Laden took credit for 9/11 (and the previous attack on twin towers).  Who raised these children...oh nevermind, it was probably TV.

Wow! What a scholar athlete he turned out to be. Who is at fault here? The liberal professors or did he just spend that college time skipping class, smoking pot and never reading a curent events periodical or newspaper. You can cure ignorance with education, but unfortunately Stupidity is a terminal illness--and this boob has people who actually "follow" him! WTF--this country is doomed.

A football player is apset about death threats? They got more gangsters and thugs on a team than does your local jail. Wipe off the tears man. You look like an asshole.

Osama release numerous tapes.  WE HEARD SPEAK!

Osama had a hand in killing tens of thousands of people.  WE HEARD HIM SPEAK!

there's a good reason we don't take economic and geo-political advice from those who've taken thousands of hits to the head, even Monica

Wow, Rash, you are brilliant.  No wonder we should take political advice from Athletes.

Invading a Sovergn Country, Killing unarmed people and Bombing Gadaffi's kids and Grandchildren without Congressional Approval is What Obama was talking about when he said that he would restore America's Honor in the world after Bush's torutre and War Crimes.

I don't think that you should be in an uproar over his opinions. The fact of the matter is that he made a valid point. Killing people is never a good thing. In certain cases, it has to be done as a lesser of two evils, but it isn't something to rejoice about. No matter how much suffering that person has caused, it's still wrong.

I do feel that Osama should have been brought to justice, but not killed and treated like a trophy. Contrary to what the media and politicians will lead you to believe, war isn't a glorious game of football. It tears apart lives (not just for Americans) and fosters more resentment than solutions.

If you think that revenge was the way to go here, then I'm sorry, but you've let your emotions or patriotism cloud your judgment. If we as Americans had the compassion to let a myriad of different cultures reap the benefits of our country, why is it so difficult to show compassion for an enemy? No enemy is completely evil. People change. Even killers reform.

Mendenhall has earned my respect. I'm glad that he stuck to his beliefs despite his career and all of this.

Which brings up the question -- What would the helmet logo for the Pittsburgh Truthers look like? An image of controlled demolition of the Twin Towers involving thermite paint? And would it be on both sides of the helmet?

Don't forget the "HIT" Obama put out on the American-born Islamic cleric Anwar al-Awlaki. No questions asked, "GUILTY" untile proven "DEAD". Since when did the American government start assassinating citizens without proof of the accussations levied against them? And of course, what happened to the concmept of a "trial before your peers" where you get to state your case and defend yourself. Not in this day and age, I guess. Takes too much time, and we have plenty of EXTRA American citizens anyway. We really should start thinking about things before we start cheering and slapping backs when someone is KILLED! After all, we do still want to be consdered to be living in a more civilized society than most, don't we?

I'll cheer every hit on Mendenhall this year.

Bin Laden would have ordered AlQaeda to cut infidel Mendenhall's head off without thinking twice about it if given the opportunity.

I wonder if he'd still be so forgiving in those last seconds as the knife was sinking into his flesh?

This douché sounds like one of the jocks I was supposed to pass while I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant. There's a reason so many don't gradiate.

Justify his beliefs? By saying the 9-11 attacks was an inside job? I think there are alot more people that are on OBL side, than ours. When you say something that stupid and that incorrect, what other possible conclusion can one consider...

David said...

He didn't say that it was an inside job. He said that there is the possibility that it was an inside job, hence, "We'll never know what happened." Do I think there's a conspiracy? Honestly, I don't know. However, you have to accept that there is no supernatural force that makes it mandatory for a government to tell the truth at all times. The people at the top rung of the political ladder are not much different from the people in your local government. They are just as capable of being corrupted by their power.

Did you read bin Laden's or the hijackers' minds around the time that 9/11 happened? Did you find the evidence suggesting al-Qaeda's involvement yourself? Are you completely sure that the person in the terrorist video that aired alongside the attacks was really Osama and not someone claiming to be him? Also, why, besides the anthrax scare, has nothing big happened since that day? Sure, we beefed up security in response to it, but if there are really self-sacrificing terrorists campaigning against the U.S., wouldn't they have gotten through one of the cracks in the wall (which there have been) by now? As I see it, it's like debating science vs. religion. There's evidence that supports both perspectives and just because you believe one side doesn't mean you're entitled to condemn the other. People won't always agree with your opinion and you should be tolerant of that fact.

I don't advocate or condone what Osama did at all, but does it really make me a stupid, insensitive person if I choose not to dance on his grave? Am I really expected to take joy in his demise just because he took joy in his victims'? Frankly, I don't think I should be. In my mind, you fight wrongdoing by rising above and keeping yourself separate from it, not by using fire against fire or taking an eye for an eye.
